Canon 1d mkIIIn trade-in program?

January 30th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark X

Someone at Fred Miranda says there could be a trade-in program for current 1d3 owners when Canon releases its replacement.

“The other very interesting bit of info he passed along was the Canon rep told him that there will probably be a program where present owners of the 1DmkIII will be permitted to turn in there cameras toward a new 1DmkIIIN. When there will be a MKIIIN wasn't clear.”

No 5D replacement or any other camera

With PMA a day away, all the rumors and guesswork have become quite silent. Canon has nothing else coming for PMA.

Everyone else seems to have lots….

Canon EOS 45D

Canon to follow the Nikon path with a really quick update to a camera? Nikon did it with the D40 to D40x. Some think Canon is about to do the same with the 40D at PMA

Same specs except for 12.2mp, 3″ VGA LCD and Contrast AF in live view.

Canon not done?

January 26th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

Over at DPR, someone claims to have been given a bit of insight into what's going to actually happen at PMA. Apparently Canon might not be done just yet.

Canon announcing anything at PMA would surprise a lot of people, but every so often Canon does something no one has expected. Maybe this is one of those times.

There is some speculation there could be something with SED, Canon's vaporware television technology.

That seems unlikely.

There is also some translated information at POTN that states Canon will be replacing everything in the EOS line in 2008. I expect a new 5D, 1d and perhaps an updated 1ds, I'm not sure about a replacement for the 40D. Unless they plan to replace the 40D with a FF camera…. the 7D?

Could Canon be waiting for Sony and Nikon to churn out there new cameras before kicking them in the teeth? It has happened numerous times in this industry.

This could be a fun week.

Canon EOS 50D

January 25th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 50D

Next year at this time we will be discussing the newly announced 50D from Canon. I don't believe they will be doing away with the XXD line yet in favor of a FF option.

EOS 50D Specs:
MP: 12.2
Crop: 1.6x
AF: 15 Point
Bit Depth: 14bit
Proc: DIGIC IV
ISO: 100-3200 (6400 H)
VF: Bigger & Brigher
LCD: 3″ VGA
FPS: 8fps
Weather Sealing: More than the 40D
Memory: SD & CF
Liveview: Full AF
Special: Real Auto ISO
Special: Movie Mode

There are other ideas about built in WiFi and a Hard Drive battery grip, those are probably not happening.

So, what next?

With no new FF camera from Canon for PMA (we're assuming), there's a few people that are wondering if they'll be announcing anything in the UK next month at Focus. I think it's safe to say they won't be. Canon's history says they announce for PMA or Photokina.

There's going to be tons of rumors about 2 new FF cameras from Canon, I'm one of the people that believe they will do it.

One of the things a lot of people are discussing today is the contrast detection AF in live view mode on the XSi. Most people are assuming it wouldn't take Canon much to update the firmware for the 1d3, 1ds3 and 40D, so they can all have the feature.

I'd usually say Canon would never update functionality in firmware (unmappable print button), but this might be a different situation. The 1ds3 starting shipping basically a month ago and doesn't have the feature. Is Canon saying the XSi actually has better technology in a flagship camera that is a month old? I don't think so.

I will make the prediction we will see a firmware update for the live view cameras before the Rebel XSi ships in April. Here's hoping it actually comes sooner.

If Canon doesn't do this, I think it would be a really annoying PR move on their part. The last year has been a rocky one to say the least for Canon.

Canon EOS 450D (XSi)

Here it is.

I did fairly well with my predictions. I'm a bit bummed there isn't a movie mode. The camera will be shipping in April.

The updates appear good, it makes the Sony Alpha 200 look ancient already.

The images will tell us more in due time.

A few things…
1. Does saying “XSi” seem weird to anyone else? “excess eye”… it's probably just me.

2. This new Rebel has contrast detect AF in live view mode. Here's hoping there is a firmware update for the 40D.

3. What is “Auto Lighting Optimiser”? A version of Sony's DRO?

4. There's a new battery form factor for the camera, which probably means a new battery grip is coming.

5. The switch to SD is a good move by Canon, i hope it continues into other models.

6. Adding an ISO button is long overdue, as is spot metering.

7. PRINT BUTTON LIVES ON!

Photokina Rumors!

A lot of people are sad that there is no new full frame offering from Canon. I guarantee you will see one at Photokina! (quite the guarantee eh?)

Maybe a new 1D too? hmmmmm

Canon Compacts Launched

January 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon P&S

Canon SD1100 IS (I called it the SD2000)

8MP
Image Stabilization
3x Zoom
DIGIC III
2.5 LCD
Improved Face Detection

Canon also launched 3 cheap A series Powershots. Not much excitement here. Retailers will sell a ton of these, and at huge margins *wink*.

Canon A590IS (I called this the A580IS)

8MP
Image Stabilization
4x Zoom
Cheap

Canon A580
The cheaper brother of the A590IS. It has no IS and they probably removed manual shooting modes.

Canon A470

7.1mp
3.4x Zoom

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz… but it'll be cheap. $129.
