Canon’s eye-based biometric photo watermarking system hits the Patent Office

Some cool technology.

From Engadget:
Image attribution is big business on this tangled web of ours, but embedding digital watermarks into images is a costly and time-consuming procedure for most photographers — which is why this Canon patent application is so intriguing. The filing describes a “Registration” mode for digital cameras that embeds biometric data captured from your iris in the image automatically as a watermark — you simply set yourself as one of up to five users, look into the viewfinder for a moment so the camera can scan your eye, and start taking photos. Possible 1ds MarkIII recall?

There are various reports of poor focus on the 1dsmk3 with static objects (so not the same 1d3 servo issues). A Canon rep in Australia mentioned a possible recall of the 1ds3, perhaps he was meaning the 1d3 (There is a rumored new hardware/firmware fix for the 1d3)?

This to go along with the poorly aligned sensors on the 1ds3.

New fix for the Canon 1d MkIII?

From Rob Galbraith:

“Some are being told that the new fix is comprised of both a hardware change and new firmware, others are being told that it's not known yet at Canon USA whether the fix is comprised of hardware, firmware or both. This apparent discrepancy in what reps are saying is probably indicative of how new this information is to them, and how little information they themselves have been given so far by higher ups in the Canon organization. Canon USA reps aren't sharing any other specifics about the nature of the new fix.”

The fun of owning a 1d3.

Firmware Updates

I've been told by a very good source that Canon will indeed release a firmware update for the 1d3, 1ds3 and 40D to add contrast AF in live view. This will be available before the XSi ships.
