Canon 5D Mark II – Canon Germany

April 21st, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

The “leak” on the Canon Germany web site of the 5D Mark II seems to be more of a publicity stunt than anything of real validity.

Marketing is fun.

Specs that I can read:
16mp
6.5fps
Digic III
Weathersealing

I call BS and we won't know until August/September anyway… :)

tsiphoto rumor

April 21st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

The rumor hounds at DPR got duped by a fake posting by the famous tsiphoto in regards to a new 5D. I didn't post about it because I already stated there'd be no announcement in April. PMA Canada isn't the place for it.

A couple of coming events in the Toronto area.

April 13th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon General

PMA Canada takes place April 23, 2008 at the International Convention Centre on Dixon Rd. All the big guys will be there. Canon will be displaying the 200 f/2 IS and 800 f/5.6 IS.

Yeah, not too exciting.

The Henry's Photographic & Digital Imaging Show will take place May 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the International Centre on Airport Rd. in Mississauga.

I'll be attending the Henry's event, it should be an awesome sea of people and goodies.

The 40D gets a firmware update. You can DL it here:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contr … elid=15653

Updates:
1.Fixes a phenomenon in which Image Stabilization operation emits a sound when certain buttons are pressed, with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens attached to the camera.
2.Fixes a phenomenon in which the Image Stabilization operation emits a sound from the lens when IS lenses are attached to the camera.
3.Fixes a phenomenon in which a part of the image looks unnatural when reviewed on the LCD.
4.Corrects errors in the Spanish and Norwegian menu screens.

Canon 1dx full frame coming in September.

Rumors are abound of a new 1d camera coming in the fall to combat Nikon's brilliant D3.

Here's one readers “predicted” specs.

Specs:

Resolution: 12mp
FPS: 12
Sensor Type: FF
ISO: 100-6400 (50 Low mode, 12,800 High Mode)
Live View: Yes, with AF (New version)
Movie Mode: HD Video Capabilities.
Memory Cards: Quad SD
LCD: 3.5″ VGA
Special: GPS
Special: WiFi

I expect this camera to roll out with a new 24-70 f/2.8 IS.

Canon loses marketshare in dSLR’s, but stays #1

April 4th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon General

An article at CNET breaks down the marketshare of dSLR's and total cameras sold in 2007. Canon lost marketshare to Nikon.

dSLR marketshare in brackets.

1. Canon 18.8% (42.7%)
2. Sony 16% (No data on dSLR sales)
3. Kodak 9.6% (Lots of dumb consumers)
4. Samsung 9.0%
5. Nikon 8.4% (40%)
6. Olympus 8.3%

Panasonic, Fujifilm, Casio, HP and Pentax rounded it out.

I'm a Canon fan, but they haven't been exactly an intelligent company the last 18 months or so. The 1d fiasco, the rather drab 1dsmk3 and shortages on everything, including compacts. There's holes in the lens lineup and they really got caught off guard by Nikon. Canon needs to shake the world up at Photokina.

*Edit* The 1ds3 is a great camera, but in the era of marketing being everything.. the camera just doesn't spark the same interest that the D3 has, nor the hype surrounding the megapixel monster from Sony.
