Canon 24-70 f/2.8L IS is coming!

May 26th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Canon Lenses

24-70 Update
I've been told that a local photography store has been told to rid themselves of the 24-70 and be very selective in ordering more. When they're told stuff like this it usually means there's something to replace it coming along.

A new 24-70 2.8L IS would be the perfect zoom lens for wedding photographers and a walkaround on the 5D MkII. It does make Nikon look silly for not putting VR in theirs. Canon will introduce this lens at the same price or less than Nikon's overpriced version.

I've used the Nikkor 24-70 on a D3 and compared it side by side with the 1D Mark III (mine focuses) and Canon's 24-70… there is no reason in the world it should cost more.

Canon 18-200
Canon will not be introducing a 18-200 to the marketplace, against the desires of many amateur photographers.

The reason for not making one is simple… to make one right, the lens would cost $2000 and up. Nikon's version isn't a very good lens and Sigma's is downright awful. Just take a peak at the price of the 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L from Canon.. $2400 or so.

Nikon's 18-200 is barely better optically that the new D60 kit lens. Canon wouldn't be able to make an $800 lens perform any better than the 18-55 IS/55-250 IS combination.

Amazon & Wiley have a listing for the 5D Mark II field guide. Wiley shows a release date in November.

I can't wait to pick that book up. I wish I had thought of just rewriting the manual and selling it as a book…. genius!

Teaming up with NikonRumors.com

Canon Rumors and Nikon Rumors are going to be working in a small partnership to market our sites.

I haven't been overly active recently due to stuff like babies and work, I will be once the site relaunches with a new design June 1st, 2008.

Anyway, head over there to see the direction Canon's biggest competition could be heading. The Nikon Rangefinder sounds very interesting.

Later.

Canon Rebel XS/1000D

Rebel XS/1000D Specs
For a $499 rebel, what would the specs be?

Resolution: 10mp
AF Points: 5 (Maybe 7)
Live View: No
Lens: 18-55 non-IS (Have to leave some major selling points for the XSi)
LCD: 2.7″
Memory: SD
FPS: 2.5

This camera obviously has to be toned down to not steal any sales from XSi's. I would expect a slightly lesser build than the XSi, maybe none of that rubber gripping that is so nice.

1D Mark III
I just received one and it doesn't seem to have any trouble auto focusing.

EOS Utility still busted?
Anyone else have a problem with EOS Utility not loading in Vista? It was just updated on the 13th and still doesn't work for me.

Canon Rebel XS / 1000D

Is there a new Rebel in the pipeline for Christmas? With Nikon dropping prices on the D40 to below some P&S's, and Pentax readying a replacement to the K100D (apparently the K200D isn't it.. so says a salesrep) that will cost about $14, it only makes sense that Canon will look to upgrade the XT to something a little more appealing.

All this came about with a leaked model name in Canon's latest version of DPP.

What are the specs? who knows? I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the XT being shown the door.

Canon SX100 about to be discontinued?

May 9th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Canon PowerShot

I've heard from a source that Canon may be discontinuing the SX100 any day now. The hugely popular camera was price dropped significantly 6-8 weeks ago before the Panasonic TZ5 hit the street.

Improvements the camera could see:

The usual megapixel bump
3″ LCD
HD Video
Self popup flash
Viewfinder (not sure how they'd fit it on)

This could mean there will be some announcements by Canon in June.

1D Mark III outperforms the Nikon D3 in AI Servo Test

May 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon General

ProPhotoHome did the “Galbraith” AF Servo test and the 1D Mark III outperformed the D3 by a wide margin.

1D Mark III: 31% Out of focus

D3: 48% Out of focus

The latest firmware for the 1D3 showed a 9% improvement in this test.

This clearly means you can no longer marke good images with the D3, and you never could on the 1D3… until now!

In all seriousness, every user of the 1D Mark III is very positive about the latest firmware for the camera. Hopefully the “AF issue” can be put to rest.

Canon 50D earlier than expected?

I just found out today that Canon Canada has put a $100-$200 sell through dealer rebate on various 40D kits. This should translate into lower prices for customers.

There has been a bit of a global lowering of prices on the camera, is this a sign Canon is going to abandon their 18 month product cycle on the xxD cameras?

Food for thought, the 5D is the only other Canon camera with the rebate.

Don't confuse these rebates with the Buy More, Save More rebates in Canada, these are strictly for the dealer.

Kits with the rebate:
40D/17-85IS
40D/17-85IS/70-300IS
40D/28-135IS/70-300IS
40D/17-40L

Seeing the 17-85 on the list shouldnt be a surprise, but the 17-40? Could that also be getting a version II?
