5D Successor shipping already? [CR2]
From NLI:

“Is the 5D replacement collecting in the warehouses? We had this comment (thanks) from a visitor to a Jessops store in the UK”

“The Canon rep has told them the 5D replacement has started shipping and is in the UK already (insufficient quantities to release as yet though), unfortunately they weren't able to give me any specs or details as the Canon guy 'didn't know anything' “

Thinking how hush hush things have been from Canon lately, I have doubts a rep would say such a thing and still retain his job.

40D Going Away [CR3]

14mp 1.6x Coming
A new source claiming great knowledge says that indeed the 40D is on its last legs. The 50D will be a 14mp 1.6x camera. There was no other information on the camera. Will they include the 51 point AF? Will it be kept CF?

I do recall a posting from a long while ago that stated Canon would be replacing every SLR in its lineup in 2008. That means the 40D, 5D and 1D's are going to be replaced before Christmas (1Ds is probably considered 2008, though it was announce last August).

I do also remember information stating Canon would move the xxD cameras to a 1 year product cycle with the Rebels.

All of this makes a lot of sense.

Canon EF 100-500 f/4.5-5.6L IS [CR1]

Big Lens
It's been suggested that Canon will indeed update the 100-400, but not just with IS. Howabout an extra 100mm.

The Sigma 50-500 is giant at f/6.3, not sure how big 5.6 would have to be. Could Canon keep a lens like this in the $2000 range and a bit lower?

Update
This rumor has been debunked for technical reasons. I think I'll stop posting EVERY email i get.

Canon 40D run ending in October? [CR2.5]

July 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 50D

2.5?
Yes, 2.5 :).

I just received some info that Best Buy in the US is showing October as the end of the 40D. Does that mean a 50D is coming? or will the 2 new full frame cameras fill the void?

Or maybe it's computer misinformation.

This is actually because there is no new 5D!

Canon reports 13 percent drop in profit

By YURI KAGEYAMA, AP Business Writer Thu Jul 24, 4:52 AM ET

TOKYO – Canon Inc. said Thursday its second-quarter profit fell 13 percent from a year ago as a stronger yen chipped away at the value of booming overseas sales of color copiers.

The Japanese camera maker recorded a 107.84 billion yen ($1 billion) profit for April-June, down from 123.93 billion yen the same period the previous year. Quarterly sales totaled 1.106 trillion yen ($10.26 billion), down 1.9 percent from 1.127 trillion yen.

The sharp rise of the yen against the dollar was the biggest culprit, Canon said. Calculated in local currencies, sales of digital cameras, office equipment for copying and faxing, and other products jumped on year, it said.

The dollar averaged 104.69 against the yen in the first half of the year, reflecting a 13 percent jump in the value of Japan's currency. That eroded the value of overseas earnings of Japanese exporters such as Canon.

The impact from currency fluctuations erased 118.9 billion yen ($1.1 billion) from Canon's first half sales, the company said. For the first six months of the year, Canon's net profit dipped 15.9 percent to 214.49 billion yen ($2 billion).

Slowdowns and sluggish spending in the U.S., Europe and Japan also helped push down sales, although growth was robust in China and the rest of Asia, according to Canon.

For the three months ended June 30, sales in Japan fell 3.1 percent from the previous year, while sales in the Americas dropped 6.1 percent, Canon said. Sales in other areas rose 6.4 percent, it said.

Tokyo-based Canon kept its profit forecast unchanged at 500 billion yen ($4.6 billion) for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, a target of a 2.4 percent increase from the previous year.

It raised its full-year sales outlook to 4.59 trillion yen ($42.6 billion), up from an earlier forecast of 4.57 trillion yen. The new forecast marks a 2.4 percent rise from the year ended Dec. 31, 2007.

Canon said its expects demand for digital cameras and color laser beam printers to keep growing, although price competition will intensify.

Canon acknowledged that worries about the U.S. subprime loan crisis and this year's high oil prices weigh on profit prospects.

But the U.S. economy is likely to recover in coming months, lifted by stimulus measures, and growth can be expected in Russia and other new markets, the company said in its earnings release.

Canon 3D & 6D [CR3]

Small bits of info
My source is still convinced 2 cameras are coming to replace the 5D.

He pointed out a feature Canon is working on for the higher end of the 2 cameras. A much improved dynamic range setting. He said it could rival Sony's DRO jpeg processing by be applied to RAW images. How that would work, I have no idea.

He also pointed to them adding TIFF shooting ability. I for one have no need to do such a thing, but my local photo store that does art reproductions loves using TIFF's. They've switched to using Nikon's, they still white balance with bulbs.

It's also possible Canon will be looking to eliminate the ST-E2 reliance for off camera flash. It's time stuff like that got built into the cameras anyway. They may be able to sell more flashes if people weren't burdened with that overpriced ST-E2.

400 f/5.6L IS
A reader and my source pointed out that the 400 f/5.6L is out of stock or very low stock across the US. It's also backordered in Canada. People seem to be expecting an IS version, could it have the 5 stop IS of the new 200?

I'm still on the fence about this lens, I think they'd be much better served upgrading the 100-400. Maybe they'll do both?

Rumors rumors rumors
There should be a lot more of them over the next couple weeks.

Canon 70-200 non-IS’s getting dropped? [no rating]

Reader submission
A reader pointed out a site that has the 70-200 f/4L on clearance? Are they just clearing their own stock, or is Canon planning to drop the non-IS lenses?

http://www.jr.com/canon/pe/CAN_70_hy_200MM_SL_F4/

I can't see Canon selling a lot of 70-200 f/2.8L's anymore, so dumping that would make sense. I think they still sell a lot of the f/4 non-IS version though. If they do cancel it, perhaps we'll see a nice drop in their IS lenses.

Thanks for the tip.

UPDATE
A reader pointed out the link price is about right with the rest of the market. The odd things is the “clearance” listing. There have been times in the past that some random store has some info about stuff like this.

Or Maybe I got baited into posting a link to their product. :)
