Cool Stuff
I can't wait to put my 85L on a 5D2.

5D2 Ship Date

September 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

We'll be waiting a while
Canada can expect shipments of the 5D2 to begin the first week of December, however… availability will be very tight for the month so pre-order as soon as possible.

I won't be reviewing the camera until I have a production model. Canon Canada is pretty strict at the moment with not doing a review of a pre-production camera.

1D Mark IV [CR1.5]

September 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

Some Specs
From the “NDA's broken over a few beers” source…

* Redesigned AF system! AF points can be visibly seen during servo mode now if you turn it on. he said he hasn't tried that much servo mode but claims it works “just fine”.

* 16 megapixel sensor. He didn't talk about the microlenses and wasn't sure on the design of those. He did say the low light/high ISO was amazing but didn't know the technical details on the sensor's production.
* Still 10fps…
* 3″ VGA resolution screen with 1:1 pixel view.
* Still 1.3x crop…
* 1080p/720p selectable video (still 30fps he seems to think as framerate was not selectable). A Canon wireless mic may be an accessory…
* ISO range 100-6400 expandable in third stop steps to H1 and H2 – and L for ISO 50. (much like what Nikon have done). He said that ISO 25 was available on a model he had but it had some technical issues.
* ExFAT support as an option for formatting cards but the default is still FAT32.
* SD/CF has been retained. One card can be configured for video and another for photos.
* Same look/feel as the 1D III

5D Mark II – Remarkable?

September 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

From Vincent Laforet

1. The 5D MKII camera produces the best stills in low light that I’ve ever seen – what you can see with you eye in the worst light (such as sodium-vapor street lights at 3 a.m. in Brooklyn) – this camera can capture it with ease.

2. It produces the best video in low light that I’ve ever seen – at 1080p. A top commercial film editor who who regularly edits RED camera footage – and has seen the raw footage from the 5D MKII – says the 5D MKII is “far superior to the RED camera” in terms of low light performance…

3. You can use your prime and zoom lenses from your Canon still cameras with it – and shoot wide open… so you can shoot films with fisheye lenses, 50mm 1.2 as well as the 200mm f2 or 400mm 2.8 that you may already own…

4. This camera is so easy to use – that you can work incredibly quickly, mostly handheld – without a huge production – and using natural light – ergo you don’t need a huge budget and tons of preparation anymore… forget the lighting trucks and generators that take up entire city blocks…

5. This camera will sell for approx. $2,700 – and perform better than many $100K plus video cameras out there…

6. Photojournalists in particular – will be able to take full advantage of this camera’s strengths – because they are used to walking into any room, and finding the best natural “available light” in the room – or knowing how to add a single light source to make it pop… they are used to working quickly and with small or no budgets… which is something this camera is begging you to do…

It has the potential to change our industry.

Photokina & Another Camera Coming?

September 21st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon General

If you're going to Photokina…
I'm stealing this idea from Nikon Rumors…. I'd love to see a picture of “Canon Rumors” at Photokina. Bring a sign to the Canon booth, or a t-shirt… whatever. Send me a picture and I'll post it here.

I'll also post any other fun pictures you may have from the event.

7D?
The general consensus is there will not be another camera announced at Photokina. There is a pretty big gap in pricing between the 50D and 5D2. However, that will probably be closed leading up to Christmas with a price drop. There will most likely be a D700 drop.

I'll keep asking though.

1D & 1Ds
I haven't received any credible information about the replacements for these 2 cameras. Just a lot of opinion.

If it's true and the Canon marketing department wants megapixels over sensor tech, expect a near medium format 1Ds.

As for the 1D, APS-H or FF? I'm on the fence as to which I'd prefer. I do know 10-12mp is ENOUGH! I could see it matching the 50D in resolution.

Rumors
What did our sources do well on?

1. CR was the first site with the 20+ mp specs for the 5D2
2. CR was bang on with the 15mp 2nd camera, however it wasn't FF.
3. CR was first to say the SX would be slit into 2 cameras. We assumed SX100, but it turned out the new S5 was split into 2 under the SX model name.
4. CR was the first to report DIGIC IV on the new cameras.
5. CR was the first to say 3 new cameras. (XS, 50D, 5D2)
6. We knew the 40D would remain current with the 50D.

What we flubbed?
1. Our lens sources were way off. No 24-70 or 100-400 replacements. The 35L was actually the 24L
2. No “GMOS” camera, although we eventually thought it'd be pushed to PMA in the spring.
3. 2 Full Frame Cameras never came (for now).
4. The 5D Mark II Launch in general. :(
5. Probably some other things I still need to look over.

Some rumors turn out to be fragments of truth. I know our rumors for PMA will be a lot better. I'll have a better filter on sources now.
