50D Review – DPR

It’s done
DPR has completed their review of the 50D (No, I haven’t finished mine.). I agree with some of their negatives and I’ll even be adding a few (teaser!).

Very Disappointing!
If canon wool’d just put less Mp it wool’d be perfect.
4.5 Pixel Density is much to much!

I aggree , 15mp is far to much for that size of a sensor, my 6.3mp 10D has sharper and more detailed images than my 30D and my friends 40D.

let’s just hope the 5dmkII doesn’t suffer from the same problem!

Well, I expected a slating but I didn’t expect it to be that explicit. :-)

@yatzie
It won’t!
The 5dII Has 2.4MP/CM^2 Pixel density same as the 1DsIII
The 50d has 4.5!

the 50D is good news. it means a cheaper 40D, and a 60D on the way before you know it that will be the true evolution of the 40.

This is great news when I go to sell my 40D on eBay to help pay for the 5DII as the 40D is probably a better camera. :)

I was right on the money on all the bad things about the 50D. It took me 1 day of real work to figure out the camera sucked and back to RitzCamera it went… I don’t care about the technical aspect of things, just how reliable the camera is under real-life circumstances.
And thanx to that Error99 issue RitzCamera didn’t charge me a restocking fee.
I really, really hope the 5D2 is not so bad… Owning a 1Ds III and 1D III I am spoiled.
Cheers

I cancelled my pre order from Ritz before the 50D became available and bought a used but almost new 40D.
I have a 5D MK II on pre-order, but I suspect that we will see some of the same things, meaing that image quality will not be a big step ahead of the 5D, and raw noise may be higher.
If so, I’ll be looking at a 1D MK III since prices for it are dropping to be in the range of the 5D MK II.

I agree that 15MP is probably too much… what about a max of 12MP (or 10MP) with all the bells and whistles + HD movie… we could call it 60D ? :-) Oh, and please, the same battery used in 5D MKII… don’t want to carry 2 different type of battery with me.

Again, I suggest you buy a D700. Don’t waste your time on a pixel crammed camera that’s worse than the camera it’s supposed to replace? Why?

I bought a brand new 30D back in March (2008) for $800 at B&H. I shoot night landscapes, mostly at ISO 1600 and mostly with exposures up to 60-seconds.
Aside from some recent ERROR99’s (an issue which I’m still trying to resolve), the camera has performed extremely well for my purposes – and I put cameras to the test like few other photographers in the world. If I had to, I would replace it with another 30D… today… no hesitation.
In light of DPR’s hands-on production model review of the 50D, I echo the concerns mentioned here about the 5D-MkII (both new cameras shares the same imaging technology).
At 2.4 MP/cm², the new 5D-MkII high ISO noise results are sure to be better than those of the 50D. The 5D Mk-II had BETTER be at LEAST as good as the old 30D. After all, the two cameras share the same 2.4 MP/cm² pixel density!

which DSLR you prefer? 40D or 50D?

I simple believe that this camera, that cames ‘before-of-date’ – half year before, has 2 purposes:
- a demand of users for high pixel cameras, without concerns on IQ and reviews;
- the stop of dropping prices of 40D, that is such a great camera and shall sell very well…
After all Canon will sell a lot, but this ‘marketing’ is very questionable!

People are still keen on comparing photos at 100% magnification and blame blame blame.
Did they ever realize doing so to cameras with different megapixels is not a fair test? Or did they know view at such a magnification is equivalent to view a HUGE print?

I like the 50D. It’s my first dSLR (to put things in perspective). I will only be printing at 8 1/2 x 11 and I also have huge cropping ability to get what I want if I missed it in the field. I also shoot at less than 1600 usually.
Plus a tiny bit of sharpening brings out the detail. And in RAW you’re doing some tweaks anyway, so why not one more.
Along with the other problems pixel peepers have pointed out with 15 Mp, don’t forget that it now reveals limitations in lenses.

Dpreview often give completey negative reviews and then at the end find some reason to give a Recommended rating. I think they are scared that manufacturers will not supply pre-production cameras and such…rubbish. Buy a 5D, save a bit & take better pictures.

i think that people that give this camera and people that returned it a bad rating are completely wrong, remember this is a prosumer camera and not a professional camera.
professionals should be using the eos 1Ds mk3 and at the very least the eos 5D mk2.
it does for me everything i want and i’m happy with it.

man… i was wondering if I should get a 50D to replace my recently departed 20D or just pic up a used 5D (since prices are plummeting) to take advantage of my zeiss glass… looks like this answers my dilemma

i think some people need to do a little more research and try the 50D in real world conditions….
2 issues:
- at this time – 50d RAW conversion is better w/ supplied DPP vs Adobes release…. (even final 4.6 release)
- err 99 is fixed by firmware release.
if you cruise over to photography-on-the-net.com you will see multiple pictures from 50D and personal test compared to 40D. 50D performs better than 40D – ’slightly’
also, there are 2 other reviews: cameralabs.com and a german based site that cover the for-mentioned issues.
they also site the limitation of the kit lens w/ new sensor.
basically both cameras are very good cameras (40D and 50D) and each user needs to determine their own requirements.
on P.O.T.N – forum members have been picking out contradictions just like on the forum on DCR….
Yes – i get my 50D tomorrow …. i can’t wait!
My 20D will be a back up.
just my 2 cents … have a good one and happy shooting …. pictures.
