To add to the last comment. Anyone notice how the biggest increase is on the Canon 5D mark II. Funny how the other cameras did not even increase one cent.

In a nutshell what Canon is saying we recognize an oppotunity to destroy peoples ambition to move up to a dslr or aneven better dslr. As such have taken the "bend over and take it" marketing approach because they assume we are that desperate during a global crisis. I cancelled my order immediately after the increase with tax the increase does not justify the wait of maybe getting this camera in the spring.

I wrote Canon my disappointment and all they could say is:

Thank you for your E-mail inquiry.

On September 17th, 2008, Canon Canada issued a press release only announcing the new EOS 5D Mark II. As stated in the press release, the new camera was anticipated to launch at an estimated retail selling price of $2799.99 (body only). As is often the case, the announcement of a new product often precedes the availability of the product and as such, pricing is estimated and subject to change as was noted in the press release. Most often, pricing remains as described but on occasion pricing has been adjusted up or down based on more accurate information at time of shipping. In this particular case, the EOS 5D Mark II was adjusted upwards.

Some Canadian retailers may have been requesting deposits from consumers to reserve product. Please understand that Canon Canada had still not confirmed the market price of the camera and was only able to do so as of October 31st, 2008. While we understand there are some disappointed Canon customers, the suggested retail price is confirmed to be as follows:

Configuration Suggested Retail Price
EOS 5D Mark II Body $ 3099.99*
EOS 5D Mark II w/ 24-105 LISU Kit $ 3949.99*

*Even though Canon may suggest retail prices, dealers may always sell for less.

Canon are aware that the North American Market share will be less in 2009 than this present year, as are other manufactures of digital cameras. To complicate the financial mix there is the huge devaluation of the yen. This is complex,
and I question the response by Canon Corp. Is it a exaggerated reaction by Canon that has not been truly evaluated as to the actual impact on the North American Market and ultimate customer satisfaction ? - (which of course is the real bottom line)

Canon Corp may be right / but then again we hope they have overreacted and will reconsider their position.

it takes them one year to adjust the prices to reflect the currencies increase in value and one week to adjust for the declin which by the way the Canadian dollar went up 4.5 cents in one day. The most one day increase in history. Now canon and retailers are jumping on the global crisis band wagon which makes no sense since they are not a bank and this crisis has effected mostly US and rest of world so why is the Canadian buyer getting shafted. That's because canon wants to ruin the customers experience rip off their consumers and lose much more in lense sales. I cancelled my preorder since u was told I won't get the camera until late December I'd next year. So why pay the premium!!

Jeff: Don't feel offended about Vistec's response, they are good people - and I work for one of their competitive stores.

Everyone is caught in the crunch of world economics, AND IT WILL EXPAND INTO MORE AREAS THAN THE DIGITAL WORLD

ENLARGE YOUR VISION OF WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING IN THIS COUNTRY!

This is not about local retail competition, or Canon trying to make an extra buck or three -

President elect Obama said it best " We are in difficult "economic times"

To think THAT A WORLD ECONOMIC CRISIS does not impact Canadians, - is to show how ignorant we are.

Henry's has awesome customer support. Preorders are so long that I won't receive my 5DmkII until, probably, after Christmas : (

Unless Canon bumps up production.

IMHO, If someone puts money down and the dealer has accepted it, there is a implied contract, and the dealer is in a bind if he has to raise the price. If you just place a pre-order that involves no payment, there is no contract.

All that a deposit on an item ensures is that you have your place in line to receive said item. If you do not want to purchase it then your designated spot goes to the next of the hundreds waiting for said item.
If Canon charges a retailer $2800 do you think they will turn around and sell it for no profit or a loss?

Further to what i said earlier, i wouldn't have any problem with a price increase to people that have not yet put any money down on the new camera. I'm sure there are probably a few people that took pre-orders without taking money and therefore there is no obligation for the customer to take up the order when the camera comes into stock. What I would have a problem with is for a company that has taken large deposits on the camera to increase the price. The customer does not really have a choice in this case but to pay the extra, and that is not fair. I guess by taking the money beforehand they are taking a bit of a gamble, the price may go up but in the meantime they have tens of thousands of dollars in the bank.

Do you think we would see a price decrease on pre-orders if the prices had gone the other way?......

I can see this causing some customer loyalty issues that's for sure. If one company decided to honor the original price, and others do not then there are going to be a lot of angry pre-orderers out there. The stores may make a little less money on those original camera orders buy honoring the price but will it compare to the the potential loss of clients they will face if they do up the price?

I pre-ordered mine from vistek and considering they wanted a fairly large sum of money upfront the day of the original announcement I will be extremely upset if they up the price. I dont know how many pre-orders they took but they must be sitting on a considerable sum of money already taken from their loyal customers even though we are not expecting to see the cameras for another month. By taking this money from us already i think they are entering into an agreement on that original price and if they do hike the price on me they certainly wont see any further business from me in the future.

As for not being the sales reps fault? Well yes , I will be courteous to the rep but somewhere back up the chain , ultimately there is going to have to be someone who makes that call to up the price and I might not be so courteous to them......
