In my personal opinion the 50D came out to quickly and doesn’t offer much techno advancement than the reliable 40D. Too bad Canon didn’t focus most of their attention to the 5D mk2 to be in line of Nikon D700 release. Now I saw Nikon D700 drop their price to match 5D mk2.

Like everyone, the 5D MK2 waiting is stressful. With a 3-years wait, why can’t Canon just release it now.

  2. Mackenzie Says:

Haha wow! Good thing I didn’t buy one back when they came out!

  3. Rox Says:

Wow, wouldn’t be terrific if the 5DII was following ?

  4. Ed Says:

Right now, the 5d is a hot item, but once the initial demand is met, prices will probably drop like a rock as well. People have stopped buying high priced items that are luxuries. Professional photographers are seeing business dry up as well, and may have to rethink new equipment unless they absolutely need it. I expect that Canon has production going full tilt, as fast as possible to get deliveries before the bubble bursts.

    GO BABY GO!

5d2 is selling Au$4200 in some camera shops,it is about US$2730.

  7. Nikkorian Says:

    It’s falling ’cause of D90 sales :-)

  8. Chris Says:

Just like the D700 with an instant rebate of $300 bring the price to the same level as the 5D mark 2.

I totally agree with Ed on Canon trying to get the 5D mk2 out before the bubble burst! The big question is when will that be? My take would be around summer time when the economy takes a bigger slump forcing consumer products to lower their prices even further. It makes us all wonder if the pre-ordering hipe is worth it and if you can do with the former 5D since that price will drop once 5D mk2 is available. What to do? What to do?

It’s dropping cause nobody wants it…

  11. KJ Says:

It’s droping because it’s technology, and that’s what technology does.
Especially in a slumping economy. The Dow closed today below 8000. Down almost 50% in a year. People are no longer talking that we might be in a recession, they are talking that we might be in a depression. The market for a $1400 pro-sumer camera in that enviornment is rather limited.

All that said, it was a bit steep at release, and at this point it’s starting to become a much more attractive upgrade.

The 1d III just dropped on amazon from 4100 to 3783.00…. prices are definitely coming down.

  13. Chris Says:

Makes you wonder whether being on the pre-order list for the 5D mk2 is worth the time and money knowing that the price will go down at some point. Depending on the economy and whether the product delivers as promised may affect how soon the price will go drop. In fact, the Nikon D700 price is now reduced to the same price as the 5D mk2 to compete with.

I agree with Ed, that Canon has to deliver before the bubble burst. And, when that happens is only when the price will drop.

I believe the important thing to consider is how much we can stretch our expenses in these hard economy times. I am considering the original 5D due the economy. It is still a great camera to take portraits, landscapes, and weddings. The 5D at B&H is now $1999.95. It will be nice to see the 1D mkIII to drop even further…. Wish full thinking!

  14. Rox Says:

Well, well… I might wait 2-3 months then for the 5DMKII

  15. Ed Says:

Yes, as DS says, the 1D III is coming down as rumored here earlier. US buyers can buy at JRR using live search for $3766 and free shipping. Thats using the 7% cashback deal.

  16. Tom Says:

I agree with Chris, I’ve just cancelled my pre-order from Adorama (I’ve pre-ordered the first day). Took me a few days to make up my mind though.

  17. MaxioPhoto Says:

    Hey Guys/Gals,
The economy is down, but don’t fret. I can’t afford the new 5D II, but I’m getting it anyway. With the HD movie mode I’ll be looking for ways to make extra cash at the wedding events. This can separate you from the competition. Also, like all technology the price will drop…but why wait to save a few hundred dollars? I would buy NOW and learn the camera in the 4-6 months you wait for a price drop and go out and triple your money with new clients. Also…I wouldn’t wait for the 1D’s to drop in price…the technology will be passed up…and if you don’t need a super fast camera go for the 5D Mark II.

    Have a Great Day!

We will get through these trying times.
