Anyone is using DPP ? I’ve used Lightroom and now I use Aperture. Is there good reason to use DPP instead of Aperture ? Except that it’s free.

    Thanks,

    Thanks!

Unfortunately Canon has still not implemented the most sorely lacking feature in the otherwise fairly elaborate software package: free turning / straightening of (RAW) pictures. Having ot use an additional image processing software just to correct a slightly tilted horizon is a major pain in my workflow!

Second annoying “feature” in 3.5.0 and 3.5.1 is the default setting of +2 (on a scale of 0 to 20) for luminance noise. I considered it a bug in 3.5.0 and expected the default to be reset to 0 in 3.5.1! But it’s still there!

It would be great if Canon were to kick into higher gear and quickly develop DPP into a fully fledged photo processing application that allows all corrections to be applied directly to RAW files – including layers and masks to apply effects on parts of an image instead of global application only.

Nikon seems to be further along tht direction with CaptureNX. Heck, I might even be willing to pay for such a “next generation” DPP – if necessary!

I browse and organize files in Adobe Bridge, then open and edit RAW in Photoshop.

I’ll be interested to see how much editing ability DPP is going to have for the 5DmkII clips.

I personally just came back to lightroom v.2 and using the new adobe canon profiles I am seeing some pretty amazing results. I just shake my head when canon does these small uncridental changes. I love dpp (has been up till now givingme the best results … It is afterall their algoryrhms) but I second the above comment. “bring on the full featured raw editing and proofing program that we pros want.

One reason to use DPP (at least for the time being) is that Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw haven’t been updated to work with the 5D Mark II. Early adaptors will almost certainly have to use DPP for at least a while.
