What do you want in the next 1D?

November 15th, 2008 | 44 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

2009 will probably bring an update
If Canon sat you down and wanted your ideas on what you want to see in the next 1D, what would you say?

As a user of a 1D3, which I think is a remarkable camera and competes very well with the D3. Having used both before buying one, I chose the camera with the better IQ below ISO 3200/6400. There were a few other factors that went into the purchase decision as well.

I’ve said here before, I’ve never had an issue with the AF.

My Wants in my next camera (yeah, I’ll buy one)

  1. A 2nd joystick – For AF points selection when shooting vertically.
  2. Full Frame – I’ve gone back and forth on this, the only reason I want it full frame is so I don’t have to get a 24 to replace my 35. There’s been a few times the 35 hasn’t been quite wide enough on the 1.3 crop. Would I be upset with a 1.3 crop again? Absolutely not.
  3. 12mp tops — Please, please, please! I’m happy with my memory cards and I’m more than happy with the resolution and print results from the camera. I’m not holding my breath on this.
  4. Quieter Silent Shutter Mode – It’s quiet now, be nice to be Leica rangefinder quiet!
  5. Dual CF — I would use it, I never use the SD slot.
  6. Improve IQ at “normal ISO” – ISO 25,600 is fantastic and all, but if I have to choose where I want IQ improvements to go, it’s definately in the 100-1600 range. This is where 90% of my shots are taken. I want the best sharpness, color and dynamic range Canon can produce at these ISO’s. I do not want any of that sacrificed so we can have ISO 102,400. If they can do both…. I’m down with that.

What’s not on my list?
For one reason or another, the following things I don’t really care about.. or I expect to be on the next camera.

  1. Improved LiveView AF – The only time I’ve used LiveView is because I want critical manual focus done and exposure simulation.
  2. VGA LCD – It’ll be on the camera, but honestly… I didn’t find it of much use on the D3. I know if an image is in focus or not with a standard LCD. It’s pretty to look at though, and by no means am I against it.
  3. More AF Points – I’ve never once wished I had more, I generally only use the outside ring anyway. What I do like about the 1.3 crop is the AF point spread coverage, I found the D3’s AF points to be really crammed into the middle of the frame. If they do go Full Frame with the 1D, I’d like better spread.
  4. Movie Mode — Ask me about this after I play with a 5D2. I’m not sure how I’d work this into my business. Not so much would people want it, but how the heck would I do it and not miss great still moments? The other thing? I really hate editing movie files!
  5. More FPS! – 10 was fantastic when I am shooting sports stuff, more? Whatever… just more editing.

So what would you like to see?

A Mirrorless Rebel in 2010? [CR2]

November 15th, 2008 | 8 Comments | Posted in Canon General

It’s coming
A source wrote me today talking about a R&D meeting at Canon in the Netherlands. They talked about a mirrorless Rebel body coming as early as 2010 or maybe in 2011. Canon is waiting for OLED to be perfected.

This is obviously coming one day, the question is when.

What there won’t be:

Meet ds
A new writer has appeared on Canon Rumors today and hopefully for a long while into the future. Give him a warm welcome.

Applications
Overwhelming response again to my request for another contributor to the site. I thank everyone that applied. I’m sorry I can’t pick or write back to everyone.

I have contacted the person at the top of the list, so we’ll see if they’re good to go. If not, I’ll pick person #2.

Red Digital Cinema Epic & Scarlett

Big Red Announced
Yes, this this is kind of neat.

http://www.red.com/epic_scarlet/

Anyone else get the feeling that this thing was designed and marketed to get bought by someone like Canon, Sony or Panasonic? I’m thinking aloud, but I almost feel this thing wasn’t built to ever reach market under “Red”.

I could be wrong. :)

Canon Canada & The 5D Mark II [CR5]

November 12th, 2008 | 58 Comments | Posted in Canon 50D, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon General, Other News

Here it is
This is what is going to be happening with pre-orders and the first shipment of 5D Mark II’s.

Retailers have to prove there has been money exchanged from a customer for a pre-order.

1) Canon must receive a fax from the retailer proving money has been taken for the 5D Mark II. Sales receipts or whatever.

2) Once this has been done by retailers, then Canon will set the allocation as to which stores get what. No proof of preorder…. No camera shipment.

3) Canon must receive this information by Friday, November 14, 2008 or no cameras for you.

4) This basically assures no one is getting the $2799 pricing.

UPDATE
I’m unsure if this is Canada only, if anyone else from other areas of the planet have any info… please let me know.

Canon Canada updates web site
Canon Rumors and its loyal readers can take credit for making Canon Canada admit they have 1Ds Mark III’s. It’s now on the Canon Canada web site.

We’re taking credit until Canon says otherwise.

Applications – One More Time

November 12th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Other News

I’m going to try this again
I’m looking for 1 (fairly dedicated) or 2 folks to help out with posts on the site.

What I need:

1) Someone to post any relevant news about Canon products or photography products to the site.
2) I’d like a person that could post some stuff at least every other day.
3) When I’m in Europe for two months over the winter, someone to really pickup the slack.
4) You don’t need to be a great writer, I’m not. The ability to spell would be nice.
5) How to apply? mail me using the form on the right.
6) Compensation? The site doesn’t make a pile of money. You will get something, it’ll be based on revenue, posts and growth. It won’t buy you a house, but it could buy you a lens… well some lenses. Enjoy your new 18-55 IS!

I will be taking applications for 48 hours starting now and will have someone (or two) picked by Saturday.

Canon in 2009 – Thom Hogan

    November 12th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4, Canon Medium Format

    Some predictions from Thom Hogan
Nikon superstar and generally well spoken Thom Hogan has some predictions in regards to the industry in 2009.

This is what he sees from Canon:

    1) 50/50 on 1D Mark III Replacement.
    2) “A bigger than FX sensor Canon is the one special thing that could show up in 2009.”
    3) To retain market leadership at around 40% of dSLR with the sales of Rebels. (Nikon 37%, Sony 13% currently)

I haven’t heard anything concrete about Canon going into medium format. When I do, I’ll talk about it here.

I fully believe the 1D Mark III will get a redo in 2009, it may not be until the end of 2009 however. Everyone I speak too doesn’t think Canon is too eager to release the camera until it is truly ready and proper QC has been done. There is a new AF system in the works but no where near completed.
