Holy new stuff!
I’ve expanded the site to add a few new features. They’re going to slowly roll out as we here get used to it.

1) FIRST AND FOREMOST… This is and always will be a site geared 100% to Canon photography. Do not think for a moment I’ll forget that.

2) Page 2’s purpose is to report the cool stuff going on in the photography business, as well as minor stuff with Canon. This idea is stolen from plenty of other sites

3) Video… gah? It’s true, apparently Canon is also market leader in the field of video and camcorders. They have everything for the consumer right up to the professional. I have someone on board eager to share his knowledge with you and build readership here.

With DSLR’s getting video, I think we’ll be seeing some overlapping technology.

4) Reviews! This is going to remain inactive for now. I have a new respect for camera reviewers, it takes a lot of work to do it right. I want to do it right… please be patient for us.

5) The new content may roll out slowly. I have to get some new sources of information and whatnot.

6) I hope you enjoy it, I think we will.

Sorry to some folks that have innocently been caught in comment moderation. There aren’t many, but a few of you have. I’ve started flagging certain things to stop a certain person from taking conversations to uncool places.

I will approve good comments as fast as possible. So far about 5% of comments have been triggered for moderation.

5D Mark II & How it will be Sold [CR3]

I received this information from a Henry’s contact in regards to the 5D2 and how initial shipments MAY be sold in Canada.

Firstly, the 5D Mark II is the most preordered camera in Canon’s history. Initial shipment forecasts have been miles off. This is great news for Canon for sure. Not great for the consumers.

The Bad News
Canon Canada could be looking at a way on how to distribute the low initial stock “fairly”. A couple of ideas being kicked around are.

1) The 5D2 can only be sold by pro dealers. Henrys, Aden, Vistek, Downtown Camera… etc etc. This would eliminate selling in mom & pop stores as well as Best Buy & Future Shop.

2) There might be a criteria that CPS & pro photographers get the first batch of cameras. Nikon did this with the D3, dealers were basically forced to implement Nikon’s requirements.

*Note: I have no opinion as to whether or not #2 is fair or a good idea. Just writing what I’m being told.

3) Canon doesn’t expect quantity to meet demand until SPRING 2009.

4) Canon might give exclusivity to one store chain in each province.

5) The camera may only be distributed to major urban centers across the country.

All these thoughts are purely for Canadian customers. I cannot find anyone in the US or Europe that has heard the same thing.

Some of this may seem out there, however there really could be some truth to it. The camera has truly exceeding Canon’s expectations.

Actuation Counter for DIGIC III & IV

I didn’t know this existed
Many people out there want to know how many shots their camera has taken. This utility appears to help answer that question for a lot of people.

FAQ Question
450D/1000D. Will the software work with it?
This should work on any of the Canon DIGIC III (or IV) DSLRs.  This means the 40D, the 50D, the 450D, the 1000D, and the 5DMkII.

It will not work on the 5D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, and 400D.  It’s not that I have anything against the owners of those cameras, but simply that the Canon SDK does not support retrieving the shutter count for them.

What’s coming?
I received a bit of info about the upcoming 1D replacement.

1) We can expect it in the spring with a new AF system.
2) Movie mode will have a form of AF that performs better than current liveview SLR’s.

Canon 5D Mark II Price Increase – Canada

Confirmed
Canon will be increasing the price of the 5D Mark II before release.

New Pricing:
5D Mark II Body – $3099.99 MSRP
5D Mark II w/24-105 f/4L IS 3949.99 MSRP

Henry’s states they will honor the previous pricing. I would not be too sure, they’ll be making about $170 per camera body if they do.
