EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS not imminent [CR2]

December 29th, 2008 | 20 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4, Canon Lenses

From the same source as the 100-400
Canon has no imminent plans for an update to the 24-70. Canon has 5-6 lenses in queue for an update beforehand. There is a small chance you could see the lens at the same time as the 1Ds update in late 2009/early 2010.

One new lens that could be coming is a 500 f/5.6L IS. That would all but assure the end of the 400 f/5.6L. There is a market of baby boomers that are eating up higher end camera gear. Such a lens would be a sales monster according to a lot of people at Canon.

Ireland
Obviously I arrived alive. Working on getting this mobile broadband USB modem working, it doesn’t like Vista 64. That should get sorted so I can post a bit more often.

December 28th, 2008 | 30 Comments | Posted in Canon General

I received an email from someone claiming they were involved in the
testing of this lens.

Features:
- Push/Pull design gone
- Lens is faster at f/4
- New coating ala the 24L
- 4 stop IS

- “Sharpest zoom I’ve ever used.”
- Announcement Feb. 2009

This has been a constant rumor for the last two years. We’ll see what
happens.

Powershot Update Coming
I have some information about what is coming in the Powershot lineup in the spring. I’ll be doing a writeup about that on December 27.

Getting ready
I’ll be MIA until the 27th of December or so. I’ll be packing, bouncing around airports and getting settled in Ireland. I’ll be over in Europe for a couple months. I will definitely continue to update the site.

In the meantime, David should keep you guys apprised (thx Jim) of any news. As can be expected, contacts have given into Christmas and the other holidays this time of year.

Have a great few days and don’t drink and drive shoot.

Help in Ireland
Anyone know a place I can order some Neopan 1600 & Ilford HP5 & Delta 3200 in Ireland? I’m having trouble with a Canadian credit card getting stuff shipped to me in Ireland. I guess I need a film dealer.

History Lesson – 1959 Canonflex

December 21st, 2008 | 32 Comments | Posted in Canon History, Canon Lenses

Something different
Weekends can be pretty slow for news and rumors, but I still want to add content. So I’m going to try a few history lessons for the folks out there. I’m in the process of collecting various Canon cameras.  I’ll give a brief history lesson every so often about each of them.

Canon’s first SLR Camera Body
I finally acquired one of these historical Canon camera bodies yesterday.

Released: March 1959
Discontinued:
August 1959
Production:
17,000 Units (Compared to the Nikon F which shipped 862,000.)
Weirdness:
Bottom winder. You could wind pretty fast, but don’t try to use a tripod!
Feature: Removable Pentaprism

EOS-1 Ds Mark X

December 21st, 2008 | 16 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4

Some ideals of specs out there
I’ve read some various things around the web about the next incarnation of the 1Ds line. Some stuff is from conversations I’ve had as well.

mp: 28-38
proc: Dual DIGIC V 16bit?
LCD: 3″-3.5″
FPS (Still): 5-7
FPS: (Movie): Variable, 1-120fps.
AF: A new 45 point system
Feature: WiFi
Feature: GPS

I’m not sure Canon cares much about WiFi and GPS in camera bodies. I wouldn’t hate having wifi, I might use it. I have no clue why I’d want GPS in a camera though, Google Earth applications aside!

I’ll be weighing closer to its release. I have it penciled for launch in the first half of 2010.

Sonic Camera Ad

December 20th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Other News

Clarify again
People have noticed a Sonic Camera ad on the web site and commented about it. I will try to clarify this again.

Google is responsible for the ads the appear on this site. Currently I have the Google capped maximum of 200 scam/bait and switch/annoying web sites blocked from advertising on this site.

I can not stop them all. and wish I could. I appologize for that.

Canon Rumors Public Service Announcement
If it’s too good to be true, it is.

We recommend Amazon, Adorama, B&H, Henrys and Vistek.

5D Mark II Demand Slowing? – Hong Kong

December 19th, 2008 | 22 Comments | Posted in Canon General

From a reader

Hi, I’m currently in Hong Kong and there seems to be quite an abundance of 5Dmk2 in the shops – especially the kit with the 24-105 lens.

It seems with the economic uncertainty, coupled with the blackdot scare, a lot of people have dropped their names from the waiting list. Prices however are still high and most of the reputable stores like Man Shing, Wing Shing and Citi are charging around $20800 HKD ($2683 USD) for the body only and $28000 HDK ($3612 USD) for the kit.

It’d be nice if this slowdown happened in Canada so I could get one. I’m not bitter.

thanks Billy
