Maybe Canon would have done better to have kept some of those people so they could manufacture some more 5D Mark IIs--many of us are still waiting for a product announced nearly 3 months ago--ridiculous!

I agree with Ramon's viewpoint regarding Canon Mississauga. Their services are horrible compared to Canon Montreal. What a disappointment. Sigh.

To answer Hex's question: YES, all the major camera manufacturers are cutting jobs.

Nikon cut 1500 jobs: http://in.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idINBKK42440020081122

As if Mississauga wasn't slow enough. :-(
I took an XT in there with a red pixel (bizarre) and it took them 90 days to get me the fixed camera back. I can't imagine this is going to help.

From my understanding, Canon Canada already subcontracts a lot of lower end camera repairs to a third party, so it might not dramatically affect the already slowish turn around that much for consumer gear if the rumour is true. For CPS members it will be a huge PITA shipping repairs across the country to Mississauga, and likely having to endure longer turnarounds, especially considering the questionable success rate for complicated repairs on the first try. At least in the last couple years there has been more loaner equipment available to offset the slow turnaround of pro repairs. I wonder if we'll soon see the Canadian CPS program revamped like in the US with an annual fee and different service tiers?

As for production in Japan, I'd be very surprised if Canon reduced resources for a hot item like the 5DII.
