I've considered buying the 17-85 more than once, but there are many mixed reviews (more seem to be on the average to sub-par side). I'm mostly into macro and have the 100 f/2.8. I've just stuck with the crappy 18-55 for my walk-around, but I'm really getting sick of it. What I'd like to see is something significantly wider and not quite as long - like a 12-70 which would be the equivalent of something like a 19-112.

Why not make it a Mark II? With the focal length there is nothing wrong. They only need to improve image quality with the 17-85 and put II behind it.

I'm hoping whatever they put out that they make is a bit faster than f/4-5.6... which is the only reason why I didn't get this lens.... I mean... I don't want f/5 @ 35mm ... the new kit lens is faster then this lens at the same focal lengths for crying out loud.... how about a 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 for $500?.. you know... like Nikon has?!?!

Oh well =)

I wish a new 17-85 will come out from Canon.
But only if will be BETTER, not WORST than the actual one.
Brighter, with less distorsion, with less chromatic aberrations; and , obviously, still with IS and USM.

@Lui

"To start, the lens isn’t highly regarded; any acclaim it gets is the result of the lens’ decent IS and optical range."

Hmmmm... David Ziser likes it and uses it regularly. Bob Atkins seems to like it. DPReview likes it. Ken Rockwell likes it. I've used it since 2006 and it stacks up very well against my 17-40mm F/4L USM.

But that's just my take on it.

Cheers!

"I really doubt that Canon would do this. The EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is only 3 years old. It was designed to give APS-C sensor bodies the equivalent of Canon’s highly successful EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. The build quality of this lens is very good and it already includes the latest IS technology as well as an aspherical lens element which is generally found in much more expensive lenses. The lens is highly regarded in the community as one of Canon’s best APS-C walk-around lenses."

lol.

To start, the lens isn't highly regarded; any acclaim it gets is the result of the lens' decent IS and optical range. From an IQ standpoint the lens is extremely AVERAGE.

"I think Canon would need to update there 28-200 lens first, i.e put an Image stabilizer on it. I hope they do. Also the 24-70 needs updating, if they could make it a 20-70 IS that would be amazing!!"

They just came out with a 18-200 IS. I highly doubt that they would make a 28-200 again.

+1 20-70 IS... as long as the IQ is there... that would be the ultimate walk-around for FF... I'd pinch my pennies for that for sure (even if its 2k)

One final note. I believe Canon will be looking to improve their entire EF lens line, now that they are selling much higher resolution cameras like the 50D and 5DMKII.

They're doing it the wrong way! It should be a 12-85 with HIGHER price (quality) instead!

Ya, Canon needs this. The 18-55 IS kit lens is good but lacks USM. Hopefully, this rumored replacement has USM and also the same optical quality as the 18-55 IS kit lens.
