Comments on: 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS USM II [CR2]

I’d love a 200-400 f/4 IS. Something to compare with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS and something with extenders that would still get AF.

I’m holding out and wont buy the current 100-400 as it doesn’t offer AF with extenders.

I donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t see why current users of the 100-400 would upgrade to a new version….

I am currently using the 100-400 and constantly say to myself how I wish there would be an f/4 version of this lens available so I wouldn’t loose AF when attaching a 1.4x TC. Also having that 1 extra stop would help tremendously in many situations as I shoot a lot of birds and wildlife with this lens. Also the push pull zoom really needs to go. The longer end of the focal length needs to be improved to produce sharper images. It’s closest competitor (The Nikon 200-400) is about 4 times the price though. If they can make 2 improvements to the 100-400 I would say sharper at the longer focal lengths and f/4 instead of f/5.6….the push pull has to be the 3rd option…I could live with it if they made those 2 improvements….that 3rd improvement would really be the charm though. I’d pay 3k for it.

The stabilizer in Canon 800/5.6 is exceptionally good – would like to see it in a 400/5.6 or a 500/4 as well

I’d be happy if they would just build a 200 – 400 3.5-5.6 non – push pull with the same size and price as the current lens and the newest IS
I never have seen a reason for that big overlap of the 70-200 and the 100 – 400. I’m no engineer but giving up that bottom 100 mm should be able to make the lens either a. smaller or b. faster – I’d take either as long as they get rid of push pull which i hate…

We have been waiting for a prime 400 or 500/5.6 IS for years… Canon has made huge profits on their existing line of lenses, and now, a lot of them appear “old” to the market…
They just need to make a big effort to modernize a lot of ther lenses, and meanwhile, we just have to wait, provided than most of the Canonists (like me) cannot change to another brand, dus to their huge investment in Canon lenses…
I stil hope a 400 or 500/5.6 will appear soon…

oh well… so much for the zoom… had a really nice copy of the prime turn up so I jumped on that … I loved the first one I had and never felt really limited by the fix FL so oh well… if they put out a 500/5.6 L zoom… that’ll be trouble…for my bank account :D

I am going to buy one…but of the new design. Some friend has this lens and I think it needs a redesign. Specially the weather seal and the old and not so reliable IS. No opinion on the optical quality, didn’t spend enough with this lens.

I’m not in a hurry but I hope it will come this year. I also Hope it won’t be a push pull design

I’ve had a 100-400 IS. It is pretty poor at the long end, the push-pull zoom is not easy to use, and the IS needs to be updated. I wouldn’t buy another of the current design.

I’d like to see a 400 or 500mm 5.6 IS though. My 400/5.6 is a great lens, IS would really help.

I’m in the market for the 100-400 but with all the rumors, I don’t see any reasonable reason for me to purchase a lens that is likely to be replaced in the near future.

I don’t see why current users of the 100-400 would upgrade to a new version, but I don’t see why users such as myself who are looking to purchase one would do so now rather then waiting for a new version.

So unless canon releases a new version I can’t see the current 100-400 selling very well.

I will be first in line to buy a new version if/when it comes out.

Just as long as whatever focal length(s) don’t employ the push pull design. It ages poorly imo.

would love to see a 200-400 f/4L IS. For as I watch all my friends switch over to Nikon, they all say besides the D3, the 200-400 f/4 is the best. Something Canon needs to catch up with, among other things, like something to compare with the D3

well, i was on the fence on whether or not to buy the current zoom… looks like i’ll just take the plunge… hope it doesn’t take too long to get a real sharp copy…. the 400/4 would be nice… don’t know if they would get rid of their precious DO though and don’t know what they would sell it for … hopefully nothing close to what the DO is going for
