Canon EOS Rebel 500D [CR4]

January 8th, 2009 Posted in Canon 500D

Final Specs?
People keep emailing about the Rebel, these are the specs as I know them. A couple of updates from previous posts, some of it is the same.

Possible Feature? [CR3]
I am being told you may see the jog wheel finally added to the Rebel line. $200 Canon cameras have it, why shouldn’t the Rebel?

The XSi may not be discontinued. It could stick around for 6 months or so. So yes, that would make 3 Rebel’s in the EOS lineup.

From my perspective as a 450D user, my opinion on these specs:

    > mp: 15.1

While the move to 15mp was questionable with the 50D, it is even more so considering that the average xxxD/Rebel user is probably even more likely to use low end lenses so that they will not benefit from higher res. Definitely a somewhat unfortunate marketing decision that was to be expected. Perhaps if they didn’t increase res it would get increasingly difficult to explain to Joe-Average-Camera-Buyer why that lousy 100$/€ P&S “outresolves” (on paper…) that DSLR he is told to buy.

    > ISO: 100-3200

Lets hope that despite increased resolution, ISO 1600 actually get more usable than those of the 450D. If ISO 1600 ended up being like ISO 800 on the 450D (and 3200 like 1600), that would give me some additional peace of mind regarding my recent decision to go with a 70-200 4 IS instead of the 70-200 2.8 (NON-IS).

    > LCD: 3″ VGA LCD
While I quite like the screen of the 450D, its resolution indeed leaves somewhat to be desired. The 450D is speced at 230,000 pixels, the 5D Mk. II or the 50D at 920,000.
If Canon’s interpretation of “VGA” stands for 640×480, that would only be 307,200 — not be too much of an improvement. But I guess Canon is counting subpixels here, so VGA translates to 640×480x3 =~ 920,000, i.e., the same screen as 5D2/50D. Nice.

But it would actually be more important if we could now also zoom in to 100%, i.e., have one image pixel equal one screen pixel to better identify missfocused shots. On-site pixel peeping at last!

    > crop: 1.6

    Of course… :-)

    > FPS: 3.5

That is fast enough for me on 450D, fine with that.

    > AF: 9 Point AF

So probably the same AF-System, if they really did change it, they would have added 2 or 4 sensors, now wouldn’t they?

    > AF: Face Detection

I guess that is for the Live View Contrast AF? I’d rather have it deliver a more reasonable AF performance… more in the Battery: LP-E5

Wohoo! No new batteries for me. :-)

    > Feature: Movie Mode w/contrast detect AF

I guess I would really like to play with that. I used that movie mode on my trusty old Ixus more often than I ever imagined. Any ideas on the resolution? Certainly not FullHD to protect 5D Mk. II, but probably the 1280×720 (IIRC) of the Nikon D90. Will it be possible to connect an external microphone? Any ideas about the coded used?
The size of the MJPEG AVIs produced by the Ixus/Powershots is annoying. Given that it is Digic IV processor, I hope we will see the H.264 encoding of the 5D Mk. II.

So if my hopes come true (better High-ISO performance than 450D, same display as 5D2/50D, reasonable video codec, significantly improved live view contrast AF) I might indeed not skip the 500D waiting for the 550D.

For me, the real thing that matters is image quality and anything that can affect it. To that end, I am only interested in having all cross AF sensors and AF micro-adjustment. Without them, the 500D holds zero interest for me.

I totally agree with Gusto and David

If that is the specs, than canon better think why they still have the XXD series in their camera line. They better bring out a better XXD this year. The Nikon D90 and D700 kicked canon’s ass so hard . . . a 500D with those specs will be a joke, except the new XXD will have more cross AF sensors . . or maybe a better AF system. The 3200 iso is a good thing, depends on what the noise is though . . the noise of the 50D is disappointing.

  8. Grummbeerbauer Says:

I guess it is safe to assume that the expected 15 MP sensor of the 500D would be quite similar if not the same as that of the 50D. So I just compared the “noise sample shots” of the 40D, 50D, and 450D at dpreview.
Visible noise on the “gray patches” of the 450D is worse than 50D at ISO 1600, but I would also say that the 50D’s ISO 3200 is worse than the 450D’s ISO 1600… same for 800 on the 450D vs. 1600 on the 50D. So we cannot expect a full stop gain in shutter speeds without additional noise.

And this is even before taking the impact of noise reduction on fine detail into account: While the 100% crops of the “queen’s head” used by dpreview of course has a larger magnification on the 50D due its increased resolution, it appears to me that visible detail is actually worse in the 50D, even when comparing shots at the same ISO speed!
Of course this could be due to a slightly different test setup (the two cameras were not tested directly against each other).
Comparing 40D with 450D, I’d say 450D clearly wins. While “grey patch” noise is worse at 1600, a lot of fine detail is actually preserved on the “queen’s head”, making it look better than that of the 40D.

Well, its of course a lot of speculation trying to judge from the 50D to the 500D, but I doubt that at the same resolution the 500D is any better than the 50D.

@Gusto: AF micro adjustment would indeed be interesting… but in its current implementation in the 50D, 5D Mk. II, and 1Ds Mk. III you can — AFAIK — only set a single AF offset value for all focal ranges. But often lenses tend to missfocus differently at different range. So I’d rather prefer to have well-calibrated lenses out of the box. :-)

@Calvin: I guess the added value of the xxD is more in improved or “more professional” user interface, more rugged body, some basic weather sealing (IIRC), and of course AF precision and speed. That’s why we probably won’t have more cross sensors than the center one in any xxxD anytime soon.

i think its awesome for the rebel line… dont take me wrong, i have a 40D which i am not upgrading yet, but would like a 60D that keeps the 15MP from the 50D but ads IQ, and has video.

What resolution do you guys take pictures??? i use the 10MP and wouldnt go over that for what i use it for. Even if i had 15 i would stay at 10 (for a while)

Why should Canon upgrade the 450D now? It’s doing fine at it’s current pricepoint. They’d just get a camera that would compete well with 50D in mage quality and actually surpass the 50D if the new model has video mode.

  15. Ed Says:

The Canon XSi is certainly by far the leader in DSLR sales. Improvements on it will certainly increase the lead. The Nikon d90 and D700 are not competitors in the $600 – $700 camera market.

More MP sells cameras, so I suppose we will see that. It also reduces the apparent noise at a given screen or print size, even if the per pixel noise is the same.

Hopefully, it does not try to provide 1080P video. Most PC’s are not ready for it, and certainly 99% of the users of a 500D will be owning PC’s and not Macs. Even 720P can be a struggle for older machines.

As a user of a 450D, I think I’d rather stay. Users of the Rebel line don’t need 15mp. And if it’s the same as the 50D then that’s just sad. Canon’s just going to be aiming that the video factor as the selling point. Now the wheel I wouldn’t mind…

Did they ever have a 40D 50D trade in? I’m just wondering if they would for the 450D 500D since they shortened the ‘lives’ of cameras. They should’ve left it at 18 months. The XSi is doing fantastic in sales (#1 I believe) and they shouldn’t ruin it IMO

Why just 16 months? Everything should be 3 years like the 5D or maybe 5 years

You can bet Nikon is planning a new camera. Canon is usually transparent with predictable upgrades which allows Nikon to one-up them. However, Canon usually has a big price advantage.

I wouldn’t be suprised to see Canon being more agressive about upgraded features. They have to take note of Nikons recent agressive upgrades. Who knows if sony will become a larger player in this market too.

Microfocus adjust would make sense because it is a money saver for the Camera service department.

Guess a D60 upgrade from Nikon could explain a Canon 450D upgrade now. A D60 with the D90/D300 sensor and video mode would be really hard competiotn for the 450D.

For what is is worth: After comparing it to Nikon D90, I came down on the side of the 450 XSI until remembered the video feature of the D90, something which I thought I didn’t care about. Then I remembered the video “memories” I captured with my now-lost power-shot and decided to wait for the next Rebel – surely it has to have Video. I am moving “up” – could afford the D90, but the Canon “feels” better in my hand and is lighter and it will be quite a while before I could take advantage of any additional bells and whistles of a D90 (if there are any I’d care about). So I’d be glad if the next rebel has video like the D90, even with “only” 12.x mp (I do understand that). And I don’t NEED a camera right now, my wife’s Coolpix will suffice for a while, so I will wait for the next rebel with video and hope it comes out soon. It could be priced between 450 and D90 and do very well.

Moving to 15mpix is just stupid on a Rebel. It will just have people stop shooting raw. I’m happily shooting raw on my 350D. 8 mpx gives incredible RAW images at just 6MB. And I get all the benefit of RAW. 15 mpx RAW images will be much heavier to process and bigger files. Too bad for the average Rebel. I guess half resolution RAW is per definition impossible…

    That aside.
I’m really eager to see the video quality. I have high hopes here. Canon DO have some great digital video cameras out there now. This model probably borrows a lot of experience from the video camera teams. Exciting!
