I'm a photographer and video guy. I own Hi-def video cameras and Canon stills gear. I've made my living doing this for over 20 years, traveling the world in a mostly documentary capacity. I love my 5D and of course the superb Canon optics. I would upgrade in a heartbeat to the new 5D if it had manual video controls. To be able to use Canon lenses and control depth of field is a no brainer. I'm surprised that some stills guys feel there is no need to have a camera that does both things well and that it somehow compromises the offer. I'm all for carrying less, having the best lenses and having an either/or ability available at the flick of switch. Given the ergonomics of the camera I probably wouldn't want to shoot an entire production with one but sometimes, when everything is just right, you might capture that remarkable moment that happens rarely. Come on Canon! You do so much well that you should be embarrassed to offer a camera that comes so tantalizingly close ... but then disappoints.

I noticed this when I first got the camera. It did it again when I had my flash on and it fired strobe. I then realized that I was accidentally pushing the depth of field preview button with my right hand.

A DSLR capable of full HD movie recorging, with well implementation and full manual settings has HUGE differences in results when comparing to "video cameras" or camcorders (even costing many thousands dollars).

There are technical reasons and potential capabilities (when well used by videographers) that let you achieve a much higher level of footage production than even those achieved with a 10K (or more) video camera.

Full HD Movie mode in a DSLR, like 5D Mark II, is not a toy nor "gimmick" at all.

Besides that, Fortunately while some people do nothing, some other try to do whatever is possible, from calling Canon and placing a suggestion, asking the tech support and placing a request, etc.

The more people requesting, the more chances to be heard. So this online petition regardging de Movie mode is more than fair and much more important than some people may think.

Companies not only listen to Pros or famouse people. If they did that, they wouldn't ever ask for surveys after a service is provided, nor any other customer feedbacks ever.

It's easier to rest, but more effective to do whatever possible. There are not just "few people" requesting manual settings for Movie mode, but a lot of them, already owning Canon gear since long ago.

And MANY are already involved in serious and Professional Video world. They see the potential of a DSLR as a Pro Video/Movie tool, not as a toy.
Canon already knows its potential too, and they've widely expressed it.

@Matejay, Bebopcola

I thought I had the same problem as you. Took me a couple of days to realise I was pressing the "aperture preview" button which cleared the review mode. It seems more sensitive than my old 300d.

Just shift your left hand so it's not pressing the button and you should be ok :) - doesn't stop it being a poor design though...

@Matejay

Exactly! This makes me think its a software issue. I was beginning to worry about the hardware. Perhaps they can fix it with a firmware update.

Sure Canon listens to pros, but they listen to regular Joe's as well. They use focus groups, read what journalists say and use other avenues. Every little bit helps.

This was already done back in September by Vincent LaForet.

http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2008/09/26/original-raw-clips-from-reverie-now-available-for-download/

 As a Canon advisor and Pulitzer prize winner, he has a lot more clout than people who are asking for something and really don't own a 5D, or do not have the same level of credentials. Vincent is using the 5D, He has 5 of them and makes some pretty fantastic videos. He uses ND filters to reduce the light so that he can use wide aperture lenses wide open.

Any work being done by Cannon on this will be because of his efforts, not some newcomers who want to take the credit.

BTW, Canon would not commit to making a change, even to a advisor like him.

Speaking of 5DmkII issues;

Does anyone else have the problem that review mode blacks out occasionally? When reviewing pictures and movies by pressing the play button, the screen will black-out like I have pressed the shutter.

No other buttons are being pressed when this happens, and all other modes work fine.

Anyone else experience this?
