EF 50 f/1.8 II Reviewed – DPReview

January 29th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Canon Lenses

Nifty Fifty Gets Some Love
DPR has completed their review of the 50 f/1.8 II. Generally glowing review for a sub $100 lens.

I owned one of these for a little while a few years ago. It was really an experiment for myself to see if I liked prime lenses. Turns out it started me on the road to becoming a “prime snob”. I think everyone that is getting into photography should own this lens. I think it can improve technique and creativity. The added workout of “manual zoom” is also a bonus.

Fix My 5D Mark II & Google Ads (again)

January 28th, 2009 | 12 Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

I’ll bite
Some folks have started an online petition to Canon to “fix” the 5D Mark II movie mode. Since the community has been so good to me, I’ll return the favor on this one.

http://www.5dfix.com

What the community wants from you Canon

  • To manually change the aperture
  • To manually change the ISO
  • To manually change the shuwhtter speed
  • To be able to record in 24p, 25p, (30p)

I have heard from various people Canon is actually addressing at least one of those requests. We’ll see what happens.

Head on over to the site and get involved.

Google Ads
I answer a lot of the same questions in emails countless times. I love doing it as its part of being the guy that writes on this site.

I will answer this question/concern for the 4th time on this site.

I do not have total control over what ads appear via Google Adsense. I know various bait and switch sites pop up from time to time. I have 200 scam sites currently blocked with Google, unfortunately that is the maximum I can block. These scam sites find various ways to slip through the cracks and there’s nothing I can do about it.

Canon Rumors Public Service Announcement
If it’s too good to be true, it is. There are no bargains in photography.

Thanks again.

On the Flipside – 50 f/1.4 Sticking Around? [CR2]

January 28th, 2009 | 10 Comments | Posted in Canon Lenses

Back and forth we go
A day after seeing signs the 50 f/1.4 was being replaced, I get a few emails saying the lens will remain current for the “foreseeable future”. Who knows how far into the future that is.

B&H has stock again as do most places around the web.

I am in the camp that sees no real reason to replace the lens at this time. It performs beyond its cost the times I have used it.

I downgraded the previous rumor.

Canon 50 f/1.4 Discontinued? [CR2]

January 27th, 2009 | 23 Comments | Posted in Canon Lenses

From various places
I’ve received a couple emails from retailers saying the 50 f/1.4 has been discontinued. The lens is backordered at B&H at the time of writing this.

I have no current information about a replacement.

1D Mark IIIn [CR2] *UPDATE #2*

January 26th, 2009 | 34 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

UPDATE #2
The original message board post has been removed. The person that took the picture has requested it be removed from everywhere on the web, including here at Canon Rumors. The image was apparently first posted on Flickr. The person claims to be worried about his/her employment.

Will Canon Rumors remove it? Yes, at 12AM EST January 28, 2009.

UPDATE
I’ve received a few cryptic emails about this posting and have decided to raise the ranking to [CR2].

After looking at the image closer with my laptop, I see the hard white edges are actually there hiding other text. So this information appears to actually be in the computer.

thanks Marty

Is it coming?
This is from a German message board. Apparently the 1D3n has appeared in a stock system.

Upon a 2nd look, it definitely looks fake. The white area around the camera text looks pasted on. I could be wrong, I’m sitting an airport internet kiosk with the worst screen ever.

Canon – “Go get some”

January 26th, 2009 | 5 Comments | Posted in Canon General

Well, well, well…
While Nikon guys are playing with their cameras, Canon guys have been told to play with their………… what? (Just poking a bit of fun, I love you Nikon guys.)

I’m late on this one, but just in case you hadn’t yet seen it…..

From CNN

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) — Even before one reaches the front door of Canon’s headquarters in Tokyo, one can sense the virtual stampede of employees pouring out of the building exactly at 5:30 p.m.
Japan’s birth rate of 1.34 is below the level needed to maintain the country’s population.

Japan’s birth rate of 1.34 is below the level needed to maintain the country’s population.

In a country where 12-hour workdays are common, the electronics giant has taken to letting its employees leave early twice a week for a rather unusual reason: to encourage them to have more babies.

“Canon has a very strong birth planning program,” says the company’s spokesman Hiroshi Yoshinaga. “Sending workers home early to be with their families is a part of it.”

Japan in the midst of an unprecedented recession, so corporations are being asked to work toward fixing another major problem: the country’s low birthrate.

Canon X-Ray Camera
I didn’t know such a thing existed, I’d like to add it to the collection. I’ll wait for a cheaper auction.

Olympus Rumors
It’s being said Olympus may be releasing 2 Micro 4/3 cameras at PMA. I only write about this because I want the rangefinder shaped orange one Olympus displayed at Photokina. The Panasonic G1 is far too busy and “techie” for what I desire. I think a lot of other Canon users will be interested in such a camera.

The coming M4/3 20mm f/1.7 would go fantastic with it.

Read more about it at 1001 Noisy Cameras.

If enough of us buy them, maybe Canon will make one for us. Doesn’t hurt to wish.
