1D Mark X [CR3]

January 12th, 2009 | 26 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

We just may see it in 2009
According to a report [NL] there is a hold up with the new 1D and its movie capabilities.

quote
“…Canon has a replacement for the 1D MKIII ready to launch during the second quarter of 2009. What’s holding Canon back is a decision from FIFA … to allow pro-cameras with video capability ( see 5D MKII) during sporting events. FIFA is currently looking into the legal implications with television rights and contracts with broadcasters. If FIFA give the green light then Canon will release the camera.”

I’ve waited to comment on it until I heard some first hand info. “It’s not a huge deal and won’t delay the launch of the camera.”

Announcement
What I also heard was a possible announcement date of May 19, 2009.

I have no spec outlines yet, but they’ll be coming.

5D Mark II Firmware

January 9th, 2009 | 9 Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II, Canon Firmware

All Better
Everyone is saying the firmware has fixed the issues. I’ve only had one person comment that the banding issue has also been fixed. The sRaws have to be processed in DPP, so that was the reason for the update to that.

I still have one source saying added features could still be on the table in the next 30-60 days. Don’t hold us to that.

Jessops in Belfast
I finally got the film I wanted for my needs at Jessops in Belfast. Very nice people there. If anyone from the store reads this site, make a comment and I’ll drop a CR T-Shirt off at the store tomorrow. I leave Belfast on Sunday.

Canon GX [CR1]

January 8th, 2009 | 11 Comments | Posted in Canon PowerShot

The “G”MOS
Received this email thisi morning, talking about the flagship “G” series from Canon using a CMOS sensor. This is [CR1.5] and a rumors site. :)

Specs:
mp: 10.1 CMOS Sensor (Larger, no exact measurement)
Lens: 3.5x Zoom (28-100) L Badged
ISO: 50-6400
Proc: DIGIC IV
LCD: 3″ VGA LCD
FPS: 2.5
Feature: 720p HD Movie Mode
Price: $799 USD

How can they charge more for a P&S than an SLR? Because the person that wants this camera will pay for it!

I think this is more of a dream camera than a reality camera. It’d be nice though. Please take note of the [CR1] rating for this one.

Canon EOS Rebel 500D [CR4]

100-3200
Proc:

Possible Feature? [CR3]
I am being told you may see the jog wheel finally added to the Rebel line. $200 Canon cameras have it, why shouldn’t the Rebel?

The XSi may not be discontinued. It could stick around for 6 months or so. So yes, that would make 3 Rebel’s in the EOS lineup.

5D Mark II Firmware 1.0.7

January 8th, 2009 | 16 Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

Firmware Changes
Firmware Update Version 1.0.7 improves and mitigates the following two types of image quality phenomena that occur under certain shooting conditions.

1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources become black)
2. Vertical banding noise

Firmware Version 1.0.7 is for EOS 5D Mark II cameras with firmware up to version 1.0.6. If the camera’s firmware is already version 1.0.7, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Notes:
When updating to Firmware Version 1.0.7, please also update the Digital Photo Professional and Picture Style Editor software. Firmware Version 1.0.7 can be downloaded from the bottom of this page. Updates for Digital Photo Professional and Picture Style Editor can be downloaded from the following Web site.

Canon 50th Anniversary of the SLR

2009: THE START OF A NEW ERA FOR CANON’S SINGLE-LENS REFLEX CAMERAS, COMMEMORATING 50 YEARS SINCE CANON LAUNCHED ITS FIRST, IN 1959.

Mississauga, ON, January 5, 2009 – Canon Canada Inc., a leader in digital imaging, helps honour 50 years of SLR camera sales, beginning with the sale of Canon’s first SLR camera in 1959. 2009 is a milestone year, commemorating the passing of 50 years since Canon sold its first single-lens reflex camera. Canon’s single-lens reflex cameras have evolved with the times, incorporating advanced and groundbreaking technology. Exceeding a cumulative total of 53 million units, they have garnered extensive support from photographers around the world. Looking to the future, Canon will continue its efforts to develop its single-lens reflex cameras and lead image culture for the next 50 years.

Canon’s history with 35mm single-lens reflex cameras began in May 1959, when Canon Inc. launched the Canonflex. Thereafter, the Company continued to introduce cameras that embodied solid technology and innovativeness, including the F-1, its first professional model (1971); the AE-1, the world’s first single-lens reflex camera with built-in CPU (1976); and the T90, a state-of-the-art T Series model (1986).

Additionally, in March 1987, Canon adopted the world’s first electronic mount and launched the EOS650, a new-generation AF single-lens reflex camera with electronic control that was originally between the lens and the body and then encompassed the entire system. The EOS Series, which has continued to the present day, has rapidly expanded users in both the professional segment, with the top-of-the-line EOS-1 (1989), and in the entry segment, with the EOS Rebel (1993), for which size and weight reductions were accomplished.
Since the year 2000, an era of full-fledged digitalization has been dawning, beginning with the EOS D30 (2000). With speed, ease and high image quality as its key concepts, the EOS Digital Series has constantly been a leader in the evolution of single-lens reflex cameras with Canon-developed CMOS sensors, high-performance image processor DIGIC and an EF lens group that boasts outstanding optical performance and an abundant line-up.

Last year, in 2008, Canon released four models, including the EOS Rebel XSi, which has acquired the top market share in numerous countries around the world, and the EOS 5D Mark II, which is equipped with the first full high-definition movie recording functions for a single-lens reflex camera. With the introduction of these camera models, the Company has successfully created an even more powerful lineup.

As we review this half a century of history, Canon is truly grateful to all of its photographers for their support and seeks to continue the challenge of creating single-lens reflex cameras that provide the best image quality and reliability for the next generation.

5D Mark II Firmware [CR3]

January 6th, 2009 | 69 Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

It’s coming
The new firmware has missed a few of the supposed release dates I was told. I’ve been told the new firmware has been held up for extra testing.

I’m told again that Canon could be doing some PR moves with the firmware and adding a feature or 2. 24p perhaps? It would be a smart move by Canon for sure.

I’m told you’ll all have it before the end of January for sure.

I’m still thinking it’ll be sometime in February.

New 2xx Series Flash [CR2]

January 6th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Canon Flashes

Is one coming?
I think one of the biggest missing items in Canon’s lineup is a useful small flash for the likes of the G10 and SX10IS. There aren’t too many people that will spend about the same amount of money on a flash as they did the camera.

I was told last year that a new 2xx series flash was coming. I have nothing concrete that it’ll be introduced at PMA, but hold tight.

I’ll add easy linkage to the top of the site shortly, my internet is a bit wiggy this week.

  • 1.6, 1.3, 1.0 Crop Modes
  • Better Vertical Swivel

I could see this coming at PMA, There’s definately a market for higher end flashes. The p

UPDATE
The previous 1Ds post wasn’t supposed to appear, I had it set as a draft. The rumor is old and one of them recycled from here already. Thanks for the heads up Adam, posting from an iPhone can be annoying.

Canon Rumors Forums

Taking  a poll
I get double digit queries about a CR forum every week, so I’m putting it to you.

I feel the web has enough photography forums. A few dedicated strictly to Canon. What do you guys/gals think? If the poll is on the side of “yes”, it’s going to have to be by a large margin for Canon Rumors to launch forums. Answer as truthfully as possible, we don’t need an empty and inactive forum.

Best & Worst of 2008

January 1st, 2009 | 42 Comments | Posted in Canon General

In my opinion!
These are some of the highs and lows for Canon in 2008. Agree or disagree, it was a year that sparked a lot of conversation.

*Note: Some things may have been announced in late 2007, but didn’t reach mass market until 2008.

Best New DSLR Camera 2008
1. 5D  Mark II (* The firmware will fix the issues.)
2. Rebel XSi/450D
3. Rebel XS/1000D
The 5D Mark II is producing fantastic images (black dots aside) and the movie mode is quite spectacular. A worthy upgrade from the 5D.

Worst New DSLR Camera 2008
1. 50D
I don’t think it was much (if any) of an upgrade over the 40D. Canon needs to seriously rethink the xxD line.

Best Point & Shoot Camera of 2008
1. G10
2. SX110 IS
3. SD790 IS / SD990 IS
I’m not all that excited about Canon’s P&S offerings in 2008. The G10 is a very solid camera, but isn’t a great camera. It’s coming to the time where Canon needs to step up in this market as well. My favourite P&S on 2008 was infact the Panasonic LX3, I only wish it was larger in size.

Worst Point & Shoot of 2008
1. E1
What the heck were they thinking? Grossly overpriced, no special feature set and frankly one of the ugliest cameras ever created. It will sit nicely next to your TX1.

Best New Lens of 2008
1. EF 200 f/2 IS
2. EF 800 f/5.6 IS
3. EF-S 55-250 IS
The first 2 are probably tied for first. Everything I’ve seen from the 2 lenses is remarkable. The 55-250 shocked me with its image quality, it’s a great budget telephoto zoom.

Worst New Lens of 2008
1. EF-S 18-200 IS
It costs a lot and has below average build quality, no USM and mediocre image quality (A trait of most superzooms). It has a list price of $699 and is being dumped by retailers at $499 now. That tells us it isn’t selling.

Best Third Party Lens of 2008
1. Sigma 50 f/1.4
2. Carl Zeiss ZE 85 f/1.4
3. Sigma 200-500 f/2.8
I love the first 2 lenses (if you get a good copy of the Sigma), both produce some great images. I only put SigZilla on because it’s just cool. I’ve never used one!

Worst Third Party Lens of 2008
1. Tamron 18-270
Maybe I just hate superzooms. =D

Best New Feature of 2008
1. 1080p Movie Mode in the 5D Mark II

Worst New Feature of 2008
1. Continuing the more megapixel nonsense in DSLR’s and more annoyingly in compacts.
