1D Mark X By October? [CR3]

EOS-1D in 2009
From a pretty reliable source, I’m told to expect a new 1D announcement in the August/September timeframe. The camera will ship in limited quantities by October 2009.
I wasn’t given any info on specs, just that it’s coming.
New lenses?
Yes, expect a couple of updates to big white ones.
Do not expect any consumer grade lenses this time around.

That sounds a little late if the Cameras are to be in photographers hands and well tested for the Olympics. Time is needed to use the cameras first, and to get any bugs fixed. I wouldn’t want to be bringing a brand new camera to a event that my job depended on.

Actually, there are a good number in EF-S mount (10-22, 17-85, 60mm macro) and the ones for film, 20-35, 24-85, 28-135 are still in production, or in the case of the 20-35 went out very recently. Also, Canon is good with not terribly expensive but very nice primes, 85 1.8 and 100 2.0, and 100 2.8 macro coming to mind. Furthermore, the 70-200 f/4L is a very solid lens which currently costs less than the 18-200 IS. So yeah, You are kidding right? because Canon offers a better selection of glass for amateurs/ budget (bottom-tier) pros than almost anyone and the prices are reasonable.

No 24mm-equivalent zoom for APS-C cameras. And BTW, the 17-85mm stinks.

“From a pretty reliable source” [CR3]
I’m confused, you said the same thing about a new Rebel this PMA with HD, 15MP etc.
So did you confront your ” reliable source ” about the Rebel 500 that now has become no more. I would personally like to know what that person has to say for themselves.
This should be a [CR2].
Anyhow love the craziness’s of all the rumors, just not the disappointments…

I don’t think so. You could see it in late spring like the XS last year.
I’m getting no info from anyone that there will be a PMA launch.
There’s also a strong possibility the camera was ready to go, but the plug was pulled for economic reasons.
I still believe in the technical information I received about the camera.

Even without solid evidence, that timeframe is the only logical option if Canon wishes to bring out a new 1D in time for the Olympics.

I wonder what is a non-consumer grade lens.
Is a 100-400L or a 35 L II considered has one or not ?
Because I’d really like an update on these two ones ;-)

all L glass is considered pro -
Honestly can’t see what they can do with the 35 to make it much better and definitely not 700 dollars better (assuming the current price jumps continue from version 1 to II on the canon primes)
The 100-400 has been in need for years but I’d really rather see it be a 200 – 400 or 200 – 500

200-400/4.0L (heck DO if they want) then I can put on a 1.4TC II and have a 280-560/5.6 and even do a 2.0TC II in a pinch and have a 400-800/8.0.
The 200-500/5.6 would be interesting at 280-700/8.0; but when you get a greater zoom range something has to give (IQ/size/weight/price.) Nikon has shown that the 200-400/4.0 can be good, now we need Canon to make it great. And give us a new 1D too ;)

Screw it all, I just bought a 1DsII for $2400. Unless Canon comes out with a Full Frame camera that can shoot above 5fps, I’m keeping my MKII for a long time.

i get the feeling we might see another cam based on the 21mp sensor with a digital crop mode and a really high frame rate…. just seems logical since they’ve got that sensor figured out in terms of noise and IQ and the pixel density is still relatively reasonable (same as 20D)

Creating the 1DmkIV with a user selectable digital crop from 1.3 to full frame at the cost of speed would rock! I just hope the price doesn’t venture too far from the current 1DmkIII price.

My 5DII has added creative inspiration after owning a 5D for three years; already got 10K images thru this new one. The build quality may have slipped a tad tho.
Curious if Canon will ever have an integrated answer to Nikon’s CLS.

The Winter Olympics are the appetizer on the world stage compared to next summer’s World Cup. The real push is to get Canon back on the upswing in South Africa after the inroads Nikon made in last fall’s Summer Olympics.

The pros who would use and appreciate this camera for the most part aren’t eager for a full frame camera. The 1/3 crop is just fine, thank you. The 1D (non-s) series cameras are favored by sports and wildlife photographers with the big white lenses who value all the reeach they can get. The speed, ruggedness, and autofocus with f8 lenses (500 and 600 f4’s with a 2x or the 800 with a 1.4x) are major selling points for 1D series cameras. More megapixels is what a 1D mark4 needs and not a whole lot else.

i couldn’t disagree with you more.
I’m a pj, and pretty much everyone i know wants the new 1D to be full frame. And there are many times where sports togs (i shoots sport too) need fps and a proper wide angle. 16mm and 1.3x sometimes isn’t wide enough.
And the last thing we want is more mega pixels. High iso performance is what we want! Keep it less than 15mp and have amazing low light performance.

Well, it just goes to show you that there is no one-size-fits-all camera that Canon could come out with. I’m a bird photographer who values the 1/3 crop and also wants more pixels. 10.1 is OK for many purposes, but 15-20 would be better and would be easier to market to some segments (e.g. calendars). I wouldn’t buy a camera that couldn’t autofocus my 600+2x or 800+1.4x. If I could, I would even ask for more, such as all AF points being available at f8 and the center point being usable at f11 for the 800+2x. I think on terms of how far away can I be to a small songbird to get x amount of pixels on the subject without having to crop much. I bang my cameras around, so ruggedness is a top priority and well as frame rate and lack of shutter lag. I consider something like the 5D to be worthless for my uses.

- Although there is no specs about the new model, can we be “certain” if it will be a 1D/1Ds Mark III update, or a totally New 1D Mark IV (or V if Canon skips the IV) ??
- Since it would be aimed for Pros to cover olympics, can we discard or still think it could include Movie / Video mode ?
- And for the same reason, considering there is already a 1D Mk III (~10MP), should we expect this new model to be around 20 MP (to beat Nikon D3) ?

I woiuld be disappointed if they sacrificed image quality by upping the resolution to 20MP on an APS-H sensor. Heck, I wouldn’t wish 20MP on FF. The bigger photosites the better! Besides, it’s less taxing on the glass! :)
Around 15MP would be sweet.

The fact that the D3 is Full Frame which is the 1D equivelent, would make the chances of Canon going FF quite high. Nikon now has 3 FF cameras and have now overtaken Canon in that regard. Will be interesting to see what Canon do, as Nikon has throwen the cat among the pidgens!

They’re aware, have you noticed the gapless microlenses in the 50D, it let them increase the resolution by 1.5x and keep the same to slightly better noise. When they up the sensor size to FF, and add the better microlenses, even increasing resolution to 15MP (personal guess based on resolution relation b/w MkII to 20D/30D, and the MkIII to the 40D) will give them more than 2 stops on the MkIII before improved processing algorithms are accounted for (those do make a little difference). Also, ahve you seen tests of the 24mmm f/1.4L USM II ? because they are absolutely stellar. Canon is flexing their wide-angle optics department lately. I don’t expect it to stop until they match the 14-24.

Sorry for my low level english.
> 50D’s gapless microlenses + increase square for 1D size
Optimistically, I agree. I don’t care about 1.3 FOVCF of current 1D design. FF’nised 1D have no problem for me at all, cuz implement crop mode is easy part I imagine.
Also increase the size of pixel is good for earn the photon more, just like D3’s design. Somehow they idiotically misguided, they squash more pixels up whichever we need or not… I hope engineer don’t lose sales department who need just numbers of their catalogue.
However my main concern is BSI CMOS imager, especially Sony’s one. Nikon can use Sony’s imager but I don’t hear rumor about Canon’s progress so maybe it makes increase more the gap of high ISO quality in the near future. http://www.semiconductor.net/blog/200000420/post/720031072.html
> Canon is flexing their wide-angle optics department lately
Really? Nice to hear that. The picture of the new 24/1.4 is looks nice, but I thought it is just mutation… So they know their dead angle. I’ll hold off a decision on that until picture of the new TS-E thing showed up to us.

I’ve not personally used the 50D, but both DPR and DXO state that (high ISO) noise is worse than the 40D. Sure, the afficianados claim that the higher resolution means you can downsample, but what’s the point of 15MP then?
