I have received the following emails in regards to a post about the 24-70 f/2.8L IS.

I’ve been visiting your page for couple of months. As soon as I found your post about Canon 5d markII with 24-70IS I wrote an email to that store that listed this kit on their website. Today I got an answer. It says, that they were suprised too when Canon gave them price list, but later Canon confirmed this item! At the begining, this lens will be sold as a kit with 5dmkII. This store isn’t new on polish market (they’ve been selling over internet since 2002, the company exist since 1997 – as written on their website, I’ve seen couple of their offers during last couple of years but never bought anything from them), maybe they really know something…

Yesterday You wrote about new 5D mkII kit with 24-70 f/2.8 IS which appeared in polish shop Cyfrowe.pl. I’m an publisher of [EDIT For Privacy] – one of the biggest polish website with lens and camera reviews. Every saturday we publish an article with some rumors from last week. Now I’m preparing such an article and find interesting to write about 24-70 IS. So, few minutes ago I spoke with the owner of Cyfrowe.pl (he is our business partner). He confirmed this is not a typo. 5D mkII + 24-70 IS kit is listed on the official Canon price list. He even spoke with Canon representative to be shure that this was not a typo. Canon confirmed that 24-70 IS will be available soon. That’s all I know, and I hope you will find it interesting
I’m not sure what to make of this type of thing, I’ll keep digging and posting about it.

Can’t read polish but the title doesn’t mention it’s an L series lens. Same focal length perhaps but more kit oriented?

Besides being the offer for a kit with the 5D MK II :
That would mean a new designed (improved Optics) 24-70 2.8L (and with IS too!) …. and that would be REALLY welcome by all customers….
Not to mention if the improved optics allows macro focusing (wich the IS would become Very useful)

Nikon keeps missing the VR/IS boat on their standard lenses. The same thing happened to their Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 DX lens. Unbelievable.

Yeah after hearing all the lame excuses as to why Nikon didn’t put VR in their 2,000 buck lense I’d really like to see Canon produce one.

How much will it cost though, £2000? I’m sure it will be ridiculously overpriced. After finding out the cost of the TS lenses I’m just going to hold off buying lenses till the Yen gets much weaker.

I fear you will end up right. After the recent price increases, the current 24-70L is ~1100€. Considering the usual premium Canon asks for IS (70-200 F4: +400€, 70-200 F2.8 +500€) we will probably end up somewhere far beyond 1600€. Well, if Canon then decided to discontinue the old 24-70L, this would make the new Sigma start to look a lot more attractive.

Read the previous post about this kit… Canon Eos 5DmkII with this lens will cost around 3100EUR/3900USD In that store (cyfrowe.pl) body alone costs around 2000EUR… I suppose the lens alone will cost a little bit more than 1100EUR… (1300? 1500? I’m guessing) If the whole thing is true of course!

I think it will be overpiced indeed.
Check the price difference between the 70-200L f/2.8 with- and without IS for example! On top of that the 24-70 will even be a NEW, updated, lens…I was already shocked by the price of the 24L mkII..
but it would be a welcome update anyway ;)

In body IS testing shows it works well, test cameras are now going out with ‘2nd gen’ versions for reliability testing. Both Nikon and Canon can now build cameras with this – but as to seeing in a camera, it’s still a ‘who blinks first’ situation with regard to perceived user demand. Both see it as a potential threat to lucrative high end lens sales. The current Canon system works fine with all lenses and automatically turns off if an IS lens is detected.

in body IS…. just as Canon is adding IS to this lens (supposedly) and is rumored to be upgrading the big white lenses in the next year or so…. no way… admittedly that would be nice… i’d get a new body and all lenses become “IS” but its just not going to happen with the premiums that canon charges for its IS lenses…. they’d be killing their whole marketing strategy… Nikon just recently redid all of their big guns as well to include VR so I doubt that they would now negate that by putting IS into the body (you’d be able to get VR then will old Nikkor MF lenses! )… these companies want to sell us product… and charging extra for each IS lens sure beats charging once for an IS body (unless they somehow make the inbody only 1-2 stops and then make the lens IS addative.. sounds way too good to be true though)

Sure, the 24-70 IS will be more expensive than the non-is, but as it will be sold as a kit-lens with the 5D mrk II, I couldn´t really see it go higher than 1000GBP. If it should, the optics would have to be very superior to the 24-70, which is some task.. And who would want primes, if the tiny little quality-gap between the 24-70 L and the primes of those FL were filled?

Last year I bought a 400mm f2.8L for just over £4000. The best price I can find now is £6464.99!

The 24-105L is already made to replace the 17-55 (equivalent to a 15-65 2.5IS). The 24-70IS would be a huge improvement over that (15-45 f/1.8IS) and obviously impossible to make for a crop camera.

I don’t believe it at all, it all just doesn’t add up. If anything, I’d have to assume it’s a bit of a ploy for this polish website to get some more traffic.

Anyway…
The previous 24-70 was the same price as the TS-E lenses (~1200eur). So I expect the new 24-70 to be as pricey as the newly released TS-E’s (ie. official price 2300-2500eur).
Seems that Canon’s current strategy is to upgrade its expensive lenses.

besides that…I even doubt if the so called updated version will have IS; anyone noticed all those debates of whether to go with the 24-70 or 24-105? some choose the 2.8 over IS, but what if the new 24-70 have both? the only reason for picking up the 24-105 would be due the weight and focal lenght by then…and because the 24-105 is the primary kit lens for now, will it become ‘absolete’ or something?
no idea..but I’m still not sure if the upcoming update will be that remarkable.

Price and reach? I think those are two major factors that would easily differentiate between the two lenses.
As for in-body image stabilisation, there’s no reason to think that it would have a major effect on the sales of IS lenses because there are other major differentiating factors. For example, what are the non-IS alternatives for the big telephotos? Or in fact any other IS lens? As far as I am aware only the two 70-200s come in IS and non-IS versions. Any thing else?

also depends how many stops IS is provided by the body and if the body and lens IS is cumulative… if it is then there may still be a point to IS lenses on an IS body

That’s not a replacement for 400 2.8L IS though. I doubt people are buying the 2.8L IS over the 5.6L for its IS only. In my opinion its low light capabilities are far more important.

but what is the exact reason why Canon launched the 24-105?
it’s slower, lighter but with more reach and IS… so now the the 24-70 will have the IS as well, that makes it already one ‘differentiate’ factor less right.

The 24-105L IS fits in with Canon’s line of lightweight F4 outdoor/landscape lenses (e.g. 17-40L, 24-105L IS, 70-200 F4 IS).
Canon has two distinctive L zoom lines (F2.8 & F4), both of which have their own specific niches.

IS on a 24-70 lens will add optical elements and degrade light transmission in exchange for IS in a focal length range where it is less relevant. There are a handful (bucketful?) of lenses that truly hit the mark. Factors beyond mathematical formulae collude to make a truly great lens. The 24-70 is one. Why not just get the 24-104 IS? Lose one stop and get more range plus IS to boot. The reason is because it can’t touch the 24-70. Fabulous kit lens, but critical photographers will never rave about it. Get while the getting’s good. You will not be disappointed with the 24-70.

CANON is never offer any rebate in this date and time. Right now they have double amounts of rebate. if you are purchasing the camera and lens at the time.
They are helping the retail stores to clearance the inventory!
