What’s Coming at the Announcements
February 3rd, 2009 Posted in Canon 500D, Canon General, Canon Lenses, Canon PowerShot
Date [CR5]
I’m going to go ahead and CR5 the announcement date from Canon. It’ll be February 17-18, 2009.
What’s Coming [CR2]
From a different source, I’m told to expect announcements to be for compact cameras and not lenses or dSLR’s.
The source says to expect a camera on par with the Panasonic TZ7. If true, expect it to be a CMOS based camera with HD video.
I wouldn’t be shocked if no dSLR is announced. I kind of expect the 500D to be announced either later in the spring or in the fall.
As for lenses, there will be lenses announced, availability may be far into the future however.

They’ll probably just dump a load of crap like Nikon just did (i.e updated powershots/ixus). That way they can fill the void for a while and still re-announce them at PMA.

The answer for this entry is the title from previously entry.

@Ron: Why do you want a EF 17-50/4? There’s already the EF-S 17-55/2.8 and the EF 17-40/4. The latter could probably use an update, though.
I’d like to see a EF 200/2.8 with IS, but I know, that just won’t happen any time soon. Come on Canon, give us new lenses… ^^

Just wishing some better build quality, the 17-55 seems very fragile (and it gets dust inside), and an extra end to the 17-40mm (and some more sharpness) would be good! Then I can think of buying a FF in the future without worrying of buying another lens…

Just look at what Nikon announced recently: a bunch of compact cameras.

A 60D would sure be nice.
But I’m betting on a crap-load of worthless compacts.

It looks like there will be no new DSLRs in PMA just like Pansonic and Nikon. However, if there is a new compact camera which can compete with TZ7, it’s another step that Canon make — HD movie in a point and shot.

And what’s the quality of HD from a chip no bigger than a fingernail. All sounds more like ‘if it can be done it should be done’ rather than ’should it be done?’

well, Panasonic has managed to pull of quite nice 720p video in their mini chip cameras, so as long as the canons don’t use cmos jelly sensors it’d probably be a good selling point.

it would be my wish that they NEVER build another efs lens. That lens you describe – why not just make it ef? before people say it would have to be so much bigger…
1. compare size of 17-55 2.8 with IS vs. 16-35 2.8 – not that much difference in size. the extra 20 mm would have come at a “damage” of maybe an extra inch…I really believe you could see a lens that would go from 20 – 85 or so in a lens not any bigger than a 24-70 if they wanted…
2. compare the size of the 70-200’s with is and without
same size. so the IS motors are tiny and don’t take up much room…

I would have nothing against an EF version as long as Canon can keep the price down without sacrificing quality.

if they want to launch P&S it is better if they use that 2/3″ sensor CCD of Pro 1.

Optics are cheaper for smaller sensors and it’s also easier to max out the tele end. The Pro 1 uses a “L-grade” lens.

I would like to pay US$1 for it–though I’d also like a good instant rebate on top of that and a free extended warranty.
The current one is retailing for US$1,400. Why would you “like to pay” more for the new one? (If you are a banker who just got a big performance bonus and you are wondering what to spend it on, I retract my question.)

Did you miss the IS part of the new 50L request?? Doubt it’d be only a $100 premium though.
