Comments on: 1D Mark III Service Advisory Update

This is the forth time I have sent my Mark lll to Canon in the last 18 months. It still soft focuses and the color calibration is off. I am contacting my lawyer. I have been a Canon user for 15 years. But this is crazy to spend $4500.00 on a camera that malfunctions.

I was told by someone that has a source on the inside that told me to take my MarkIII in. It’s more that a firmware update, It’a an electronic adjustment that can only be made by Canon. My MarkIII worked perfectly, and I was very hesitant to take it in you know if it ain’t broken….

Anyway I sent it in and It is one of the new cameras way past the serial numbers that had the mirror fix issue.

I figure if it is improved by one percent, thats better than not having it fixed. And if you want to sell your gear, you can assure the buyer that it has all the latest updates.

Wow what a maroon you are. What make you think your so good and others so bad. Why don’t you sell all your Canon gear and switch to the compatition if you think there any better.

yes. Mine is 554426, arrived at my door 2/21/08, purchased form B&H about 4 days before it arrived. It is quite reliable, and is fast, way out does the 9 point system, but a lot of my images are just a hair soft (I’m a pixel peeper) that said a lot are perfect, I suspect slight motion blur or by lens correction necessary, though the top comment by the admin intrigued me.

Question about the 1DMkIII… this focus issue…are the newly shipped MkIIIs still suffering with this focus issue? I spoke with Canon and they assured me that the problem has been corrected. I asked them “from what serial number and forward, are all of the firmware and hardware updates applied to?” They told me they couldn’t tell me but that if I buy one and if I call them with my serial number then they can tell me. So in other words, they don’t want me to shop around for a body with the updates applied because they don’t want those affected bodies still sitting on shelves. This is disappointing. I need to upgrade my camera body but I hate the sensor on the 50d and the 5d is too slow and I don’t want 21mp. I have too much invested with Canon to switch to Nikon. SO again…if I buy a brand spanking new one today, is the autofocus fixed or not?

Would it be possible to see more commentary on how effective the “new fix” is, and less on how digital gear nerds are ruining the industry, not that you’re wrong lisa, I agree with most of what you say, but I would like to know if the fix is effective, so I can stop editing sports images for both composition and focus….

Yes, both the 1D mk III’s are affected and the 1DS. I have shot with Canon, when using 35mm, all my pro career.

I work with so many art directors and they are so sick of these new ‘photographers’- who only got into photography cause it has now become a computer geek haven – who think that being really great at RAW processing, or being really great at working an image in PS is what constitutes ‘creativity’. I am sure to them, being EX programmers or accountants, it does, however to actual ‘creative’ people they are a complete joke.

Photographers, if they are going to actually make a living from this,still must have a strong eye and a strong sense of getting something great ‘in camera’ and not someone relying on their geek background or love of all thing tech to ‘create’ a photo via PS. You have about 10 seconds to impress an editor with your work, so you better just not be good at the geek stuff.

It’s is so funny watching the comments when some of the work is sent it to the AD’s, these new ‘photographers’ would have never touched a camera 10 years ago as it was all about film and exposures and that ‘arty’ stuff. Now it’s all about being an IT geek, it’s like they have come home.

Canon is in a sad state of affairs:- “pro” cameras that don’t focus, pathetic service – where cameras come back in worse shape than they were went you sent them in (and the problem is never fixed).

There is no point thinking Canon will fix this focus issue cause they DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX IT – the are still selling $4000 cameras that don’t focus and we, being the saps that we now are, keep buying it without any “real” complaints.

Maybe there are just too many IT types that have decided to become photographers and love and adore any tech, no matter how flawed it is. Bring back the creative types to photography and remove all the new ‘photographers’, the ones who are great at PS but can’t take an actual creative photo to save their lives. The image of the photographer used to be cool, now it is a industry dripping in computer geeks who have about as much cred and style as bill gates.

Canon ******* up big time and have no fix. Hence the reason why the next model is not being released, cause they do not know to to fix the problem.

Heres an idea Canon, stick the mark IIN focusing system back in it and go from there.

I hope you gonna let lucky… me, it’s a desaster! I struggle with my 1d-mark III and 1ds-mark III for a year now… Always soft focus… I went to the Canon technical service here in Montreal about 20 times already… I’m thinking to suit them right now!

Like I said, I hope the best for you…

You should do a little servey about the people who put the new firmware and got there camera fix back… Me, I send my camera and it came back worst!

Canon…rough time right now.
