>Why is anyone predicting IS on a 50mm prime? Seriously, people, what are you
>photographing that you can’t maintain a 1/50 shutter speed?

Anything that moves indoors, eg. kids.

> Even worse are the people looking for IS on the 16-35mm. Why does one need a hand
> held shutter speed faster than 1/16 of the second?

Maybe because anything slower than 1/80 results in hand shake even on my 4.9x G6?

I'm still sticking with my guess of a EF-S prime. 35 or 50. Makes a lot of sense in the current economy and makes sense to announce with a rebel. An EF-S 35 1.8 would make a cheap kit lens.

I have the 50 1.4 too. I agree that it is a great lens also, but its not that great at 1.4--even in the center. I contemplated buying the sigma instead, because its optically superior, but who wants a 1.4 lens that can't focus accurately half the time? I would rather have the dreamy effect of the canon in-focus than the optically correct sigma out of focus. If canon updated the 50, I would probably ebay my old 50 and upgrade. I would really prefer it if it didn't have IS though to keep the price down. I just dont think IS is necessary in a 50 1.4... I don't typically have a problem maintaining a 1/30th sec shutter speed (which I have no problem hand-holding at 50mm on FF) at that aperture, even indoors at night.

In the UK, both Jessops (my local store and on line) have plenty of 50mm f1.4s in from today. Same goes with Warehouse Express.

IS increase the chance of better sharpness at least up to 1/125 second even on shorter focal lenghts.

Why shouldn't they come out with a 50mm and a Rebel at the same time? Nobody expect them to sell it as a kit.

Yeah EF 24-70 2.8 IS i'll buy it too, right away...

Hum I mean, my bank will buy it....using sub-primes probably....

Da most logical lens to be released by Canon nowadays.

By the way, I own a 50mm 1.4, what a great lens, for a relatively cheap amount of money, specially good on aps-c dlsr because it just "uses" the best part of the lens, the middle, where performances are the highest possible.

My 2 cents

Keaton, don't get me wrong - image quality is more important to me too. I just find it odd when somebody automatically assumes that other peoples shooting needs & restrictions are the same as their own.

I agree. I have already decided that if a 24-70 2.8 IS is released i will buy it... Though i expect it to be in the 1500 dollar range (ouch). I suspect there are many people that wouldnt be able to resist. If canon wants a money maker, that is it.
