I agree that it is a great lens also, but its not that great at 1.4--even in the center. I contemplated buying the sigma instead, because its optically superior, but who wants a 1.4 lens that can't focus accurately half the time? I would rather have the dreamy effect of the canon in-focus than the optically correct sigma out of focus. If canon updated the 50, I would probably ebay my old 50 and upgrade. I would really prefer it if it didn't have IS though to keep the price down. I just dont think IS is necessary in a 50 1.4... I don't typically have a problem maintaining a 1/30th sec shutter speed (which I have no problem hand-holding at 50mm on FF) at that aperture, even indoors at night. I have the 50 1.4 too.
