I suspect user error because I've been more than pleased with the pictures. If you're new to a camera that allows you to control your shot, and this camera is a definite step-up from a no-frills point and shoot, you should train yourself a bit. Yes, read the manual but you should also search for tips/tricks on how to set the camera for various shots. The Internet is full of information and there are some good books available.
