EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye

March 18th, 2009 Posted in Canon Lenses

Stock?
A reader has pointed out that the 15mm fisheye appears to be out of stock in a lot of places, has anyone else noticed this?

Could this be the PMA of niche lenses being released? It would be nice to see new EF-S & EF fisheyes. I’ll poke around.

thanks Michael

According to Canon’s History site the 15mm Fisheye’s design is from 1987… thats more then 20 years old. Pre SLR Digital. So they could update the USM and add Coatings to the lens and call it new. Or make massive changes to it and charge too much. Lets face it every one likes a fisheye. And Sigma has a good offering in the same spec range and price.

Or they could have simply run short.

No, it doesn’t work like this.

When Canon releases a lens model update, the announcement goes out BEFORE the old one runs out of stock.

So again, a lens being out of stock does not mean it is being replaced, ok?

If… They added a ring type USM motor and weather sealing, with updated coatings included SWC (at this point it would be L series on account of the sealing) I would be quite willing to pay around 900 to a bit over for one. It would of course incorporate the distance information so RAW shooters can greatly reduce any CA in DPP. Fisheye lenses have exceedingly sharp corners for wide angles. I like that….

I still love my old 15mm fish-eye… but will be really curious to see a new one… as always it’s my paradox.

Nah – 15mm FishEye sales are probably up thanks to 5dmkii videos… I bet Canon’s just been caught off guard with the number of purchases. Even I thought about getting one :)

    I noticed that here in Europe the 15mm fisheye, 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4, 28mm f/1.8 and 20mm f/2.8 are down as well.

I dont know, would you really gain a lot adding a ring usm motor to this type of lens? Seems like overkill. Its a fisheye– you wont be using it on moving subjects, or anything that requires particularly fast AF. Heck the AF doesnt even have to be that accurate since its so wide… Just my 0.02

Actually I use fisheye for a lot of sports and action. I typically do the fishing pole, where the camera is on the monopod and is triggered via cable release. Works pretty well, I also use it for running/swimming. The ring USM also lets you have full time Manual focus, which is really nice to have.

A lot of sports photography use fisheye lenses, namely skateboarding. So I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Does anyone know when this lens will be back in stock? All the reliable places to order like B&H are out of stock.
