New SLR from Canon, March 25.
Canon launched a lot of news in February, but you’ve saved something, and we will see 25 Canon launched a lot of news in February, but you’ve saved something, and we will see March 25.
There literally toppled compact cameras out in February from Canon, but we had like to have seen a digital (DSLR) or two.
Canon has just invited to the press conference here on 25 March when we will see something that with Canon’s words are “the best”. Canon has just invited to the press conference here on 25 March when we will see something that with Canon’s words are “the best”.

We have just spoken to Canon and they confirm that this time will not be any launch of the otherwise very famous calculators that are made from recycled copiers. Canon else the last year said no press conference without calculators. Canon of the last year said no press conference without calculators. So this is a very special press conference. Maybe a ‘green’ DSLR that uses solar panels for aperture blades on its kit lens :P

Definitely definitely not calculators. Definitely special. Wapner.
Hmmm, the best. Could that mean a 1DSIV? Wouldn’t that be the best? A 500D would not be the best. Even one with 15 mp and a big articulating screen and hD video would not be the best.
On the other hand a 500 f5.6 IS might be the best. Or a 24-70f2.8 IS. That might be the best. A 200-400 f4 IS would be a lot of people’s best.
The best for me would be instant gratification. Lousy internets and their besting.

Or maybe the best is a new DSLR or format altogether. “will not be any launch of the otherwise very famous calculators that are made from recycled copies.” Is this trying to say that this model will not be the product of small evolutions like the 30D 40D 50D or the 350D 400D 450D?

Translation is fair. (The calculator thing is just a silly way of saying that the product to be announces is a significant item.)

Nikon has something “BIG” and now Canon have “the Best”. Nikonians thought that that “BIG” is an “MX” or Medium Format, Do you guys think that Canon’s “the Best” is a Medium Format DSLR? they said maybe two, 1 Medium Format Body and 1 kit Lens.

I think this is going to be a significant launch/announcement. To my knowledge, Canon has never released anything significant in the EOS line outside of the context of a major photo/trade show.
I truly think they held back to make sure this announcement wouldn’t be robbed of the spotlight by Nikon.
In addition, I don’t think the “bad” economy is hurting sales of their L glass and $1k+ bodies either.
While these are classified as “consumer discretionary items”, people who could afford such items 18 months ago can and probably will, be financially secure enough to keep buying such items.
I really don’t think the “recession” is going to hurt EOS sales as badly as it will decrease Powershot sales, since both have a completely different customer & income base.

There is usually some sort of a build-up before a major new camera, so I don’t expect anything earthshaking at all. Thats only 2 weeks away, the Chinese would be leaking the info by now.
Maybe it is a acquisition of another Camera company or something like that. There is going to be lots of consolidation in the coming year.

I still doubt that Canon will announce a completely new DSLR this month. Assuming that the production of new DSLR is ready as rumored, it’s very short-term thinking to hold back just because of slow economy. People already expecting a new camera, so delaying would just make people hold back on buying. You might as well release to gain ground on your competition.
OTOH, if they don’t think 1-year product cycle is realistic in the long run, then it might make sense to stick to the existing 18-month schedule. One thing for sure, I’m not buying any new camera or lens from Canon until Canon shows they are serious about taking back their industry leadership. I’m not selling my Canon equipments yet, but a few more lackluster product cycles (5d2 doesn’t count since it’s long overdue) might make me reevaluate. I might just go with Panasonic offerings for light compact travel DSLR.

Who cares what they come out with. It’s just a new camera and they will have a new one every year. You spend all day pondering mega pixles, new camera rumors, should I upgrade, should I not… Or nikon vs canon. Go out and make some photographs.

Reminds me of all the buzz around April 22th 2008, and the only thing that happened that day was a press release about a previously released printer. It was so boring I cant remember the details anymore…
At the end, the 5Dmk2 was announced 5 months later.

I wrote this article,..and no, the calculator-thing is correct, its not a translation-error.
It was sort of a joke between Canon and us. When we asked Canon, what we would see on the 25th,..they said: “well, it wont be calculators” :)
Have a nice day :)

Hi, I own a 1d Mark II used which I just bought instead of a new 50D, there are a lot of rumors about the 1D Mark IV and speculation over the sensor size 1.3 crop or ff. I already made up my mind I won’t upgrade unless the new camera is ff. Just wondering if you could do a poll on this website to see how many pros actually want full frame 1D versus those the want 1.3 crop?

I doubt it is fake. The original site (comon.dk) is a respectable danish tech site. The site’s journalists have been told that something big is comming – in that we must trust. They then speculate that it’s a new camera. This is were the uncertainty comes into play. Noone knows for sure until the 25th. Guess we just have to wait and see.

As I wrote earlier, I did this article.
Also, its not fake, we dont do fake articles. We are both a respectable site and a real magazine as well.
we are invited to the pressconference that are to be held on the 25th here outside Copenhagen.
We have NOT been told what these new things will be. The invitation speaks of all the stuff that Canon did show in februar, but they left something out,..and thats what we’ll be seeing on the 25th.

Remember, anything they announce on the 25th probably won’t be available until June or July anyways, so if they’re worried about loosing market share to Nikon, it makes sense to go ahead & announce something now and move up availability 4-6 weeks this summer, instead of delaying the announcement until August with ample stock ready to ship out.
Just as with the stock market, uncertainty can crash things.

I must say, the translation is quite accurate as a dane. The whole calculator thing that was mentioned was just basically pointing out that they wont be introduction calculators from recycled photocopiers. Its a lame joke, but its just a danish thing :-).
The website itself is NOT fake, i read their magazine every once in a while but also read their stuff on the website daily. Well respected journalists and magazine, and if they’re invited to a Canon pressconference, it means something serious is around the corner. Now why it was only annouced through a danish magasine and located in Copenhagen, is a completely different question. We’ll see what they’ll annouce!

leap frog.
and no, that’s jumping out of the category and going up against Hasselblad, Mamiya, and the rest of the MF gang. If they made MF it would not be price competetive with the D3x anymore, nor would it be as portable (Ds mki/II/III and D3X can be used as stand alone cameras, and often are by nature shooters/people who need sharp high res files, but portability and fast reaction from cameras. The High resolution FF/FX cameras are not direct competitors to MF cameras, they do take away some of their business, yes, but if you need sharpness and resolution and can sacrifice mobility and shooting flexibility, and can afford to pay, MF is still the place to be. Besides, if Canon entered this arena they would need all new glass, the new T/S lenses have a 67mm image circle, which is gigantic for 35mm, but still barely under the required image circle for 645, the smallest MF.

Justin Reply:

Don’t they have these huge image circles to allow for greater shifting?

yes, 12mm of shift with an ultrawide and still sharp and evenly lit corners. :)

perhaps it’s a rebel series with a full frame sensor! a little plastic body with the ability to make a 50mm lens normal again.
that would truly spin the industry on its head. go on canon, i dare you.
haha.. i love speculating about gear as much as i playing with it.

“LCD swivel” rumours were floating in the air recently, I would bet Canon people were trying to test the reaction of the internet crowd.
I am getting used be disappointed. So I guess there’ll be definitely no affordable FF body ! :)

I think a swivel LCD is a crap idea of epic proportions, it’s just going to break and prove to be not much use. SLR’s are much more robust than even the most expensive video cameras.

It does sound like Canon was concerned about the possibility of being upstaged by Nikon or Sony at PMA and held off a bit. Losing all the publicity at a time when $$ are tight does not make much sense though.
I would like to see some more innovative things make their way into the Canon line of cameras rather than more MP
Things like
In camera focus bracketing
In Camera HDR
Lower Noise thru stacking of a burst of photos
Movie Mode with manual controls
In camera wireless flash control
In Camera GPS
And, that swivel viewfinder is a great tool for photographers.

meh… swivel screen is not very interesting, it would be better to just put Wi-Fi in the cameras and use a laptop/mobile phone/computer/flexible LCD as a much more articulated screen, less chance of breaking…

and way less portability. you don’t need a swivel screen on a tripod that much.

Another thing,..I do believe other countries will have the same press meeting,..but maybe they are just not that informative about it ;)
Marius,..
Yes, its definately photo-related…
When Canon writes the way they did, we are not talking compact cameras,..it will most likely be DSLR.
As many other are saying, I could go with a replacement for 450D,..that would be logical…but I honestly dont know yet..

While reading articles at zoom.comon.dk and compared it to canonrumors.com, I’ve often thought about how you could have the same stories as this site, sometimes even before posted in here. And now that it seemes to be that you’re a provider of those informations, it makes a lot more sense ;)
Will you post any updates on this topic at zoom.comon.dk, or do you keep something for yourself?

Hey Mathias,..
Thanks (tak),.. actually I havent been writing in here before this Canon announcement story. And that was only because our story was copied in here :)
So no, I’m not a provider of news in here, but the different newssites copy each others news, so we sort of “provide each other” :-D
Regarding material/keeping it to ourselves:
Whenever there are new products/prototypes etc., we (the magazines), will sign a NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement).
The NDA means we cannot share info at all on the subject which we signed, otherwise we will be prosecuted.
Even if other magazines/websites etc writes about the product, we still have to stick with the NDA, and not say a word.
The NDA normal stops, whenever a pressrelease or a release of the product happens.
But not all products are under a NDA, a lot of times we dont get to see products before the pressconference. Then we can basically write whatever we want/think/digg up :)
So we will share all the info we can, thats our job ;)
(And welcome to Zoom magazine, thanks for the subscription)
