The 18-55 IS is good enough as a kit lens. Make the 18-120 or what ever this new lens will be an upgraded EF-S lens for people who want a quality walk around for a crop body, it could even replace the 17-85 but retain ring usm and metal mount and non-rotating front of that lens.

Come on Canon new EF-S lens but stop using micro motors with the 18-200. Nikon put USM in it's DX lens so you can put it in EF-S, The 18-200 EF-S would have been so much better if it had USM.

I though Canon said a few years back that it was committed to putting usm in all it's lens.

Both Pentax and Olympus sell kit lenses that are similarly priced without rotating front elements.

I would not mind in-body stabilization despite the fact that I have spent a lot of money on 70-200 2.8 IS and will soon buy another IS zoom, I also have a few primes that I like (including my favourite 85mm 1.8) and I’d love to have some kind of IS for them, even 1-, 2-stop one. Face it, with 3-stop IS for 70-200 I can shoot 80mm at 1/25s easily, on the other hand with my 85mm prime I have to shoot at 1/100 or so (maybe a tad slower) to be sure of a sharp picture and a lot of aperture advantage that 85mm 1.8 had over 70-200 2.8 gets lost in the process.

2-stop IS system in the new 500D or whatever will come next (60D or whatever) would make me upgrade my “ancient” 400D, I could not care less about a movie mode or some fancy articulated screens.

You are proving my point.

Your $150 kit lens will no longer cost $150 if you add a non rotating front element. I would expect it to double the cost at least. The lens will no longer be a nice "budget lens" for your 1000d. If you want specific features... they cost money.

Turns out the 17-85 IS has a non rotating FE. It is about 450 if memory serves.

Brilliant Suggestion!
If only others had thought of that sooner!
Recommend a $1030 replacement lens for a $100 kit lens! You're right, that's definitely the way to go for someone on a budget with a Rebel 1000D!
Are you Turbo Tax Tim by any chance???

because that adds engineering complexity and build cost. the 18-55 is a budget lens. Adding a non rotating front element would raise the cost and thus defeat the purpose of "budget".

If you want an 18-55 ef-s in non-rotating front element, they make the 17-55 2.8 IS

"I’D LOVE to see a 24-85 2.8 or a 20-75 2.8 or a 24-70 2.0 - something to add usability and letting me carry less lenses…"

I am waiting on whater canon will come up with next... i need them to be a bit wider as i am not using them on a full frame

Right!
I think there only will be a few new canon printers!
Last year Canon announced the imagePRESS C6000 in Germany on 25th of March 2008.
