A DSLR should focus on the best possible still photography. The choice between 40D and 500D comes down to what you value most: professional quality body, or extraneous features such as HD video. The 40D has a wonderful all-magnesium body and comfortable grip. For handling over extended use, the 40D wins hands down. (That's why I bought the 40D a few weeks ago.) The 500D (and 450D) has the most uncomfortable grip I've ever experienced. And I am not yet sold on 15 mp IQ. If I wanted to shoot video, I’d get a Sony camcorder.
