If I wanted to shoot video, I'd get a Sony camcorder. A DSLR should focus on the best possible still photography. The choice between 40D and 500D comes down to what you value most: professional quality body, or extraneous features such as HD video. The 40D has a wonderful all-magnesium body and comfortable grip. For handling over extended use, the 40D wins hands down. (That's why I bought the 40D a few weeks ago.)

The 500D (and 450D) has the most uncomfortable grip I've ever experienced. And I am not yet sold on 15 mp IQ.

no, the 500D is a direct replacement to the 450D, thats why their sequential. the XXXD is now the higher end rebel. The video is to counter the nikon D90 true, but the XSi will be discontinued sooner then the T1i. the rebel XS or 1000D is a lower point.

The T1i/500D isn't a direct replacement for the XSi/450D, it's a new point in the range to compete with the Nikon D90. Here in the UK, for example, the 500D is selling for about £350 more than the 450D.

About the rating system: My suggestion would be to go numerical. It's easy to calculate and understand, like something like this:

CR1 - a new source
CR2 - has reported at least 5 times, but has a less than 50:50 success rate
CR3 - has reported at least 5 times and has a more than 50:50 success rate
CR4 - is close 8 out of 10 times or better; known to be an inside source
CR5 - appears to be a fact mistakenly released early; documented leak from a major distributor; statement from a major company's CEO or press department

That would also take the rumour assignment guess work away a bit.

I bet Canon will put IS on every single lens over 50mm which they introduce from now on, so that there will be no need for in-body IS. Such built-in IS would then be welcome for older lenses or (and here Canon will not be happy to help) would add IS to non-Canon lenses. In short - can't see that happening.

yeah, but no actually likes the 9pt system. It's coverage is poor and it doesn't track at all, It's just plain dinky on FF
