1D Mark IV

April 20th, 2009 Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

Reuters?
A real life friend actually told me that he heard that Reuters has signed new NDAs with Canon. The only thing Reuters would care about is pro camera bodies and to a lesser extent, lenses. Apparently the NDA’s are for June through August.

Whether what he heard is true or not remains to be seen.

Going by history, this would put a new camera in the September ‘09 timeframe.

This would give us the time we need to put the new camera through the paces. I think you posted you had been told to look for updates on the 300 2.8, and the 400 2.8 this year as well? Those would go really well together and fit in ones bag quite well for the 2010 Olympics!

Canon has often historically announced new pro series cameras in September/August or Jan/Feb.

Not necessarily. Telling people that Company A has agreed to an NDA with Company B doesn’t necessarily violate the NDA, unless it contained a clause saying “you do not talk about NDA club” :P

Yeah it’s like attorney-client privilage, you can say you met with your attorney and for how long you just can’t discuss any of the substance of the conversation.

So does this mean that Reuters would be using beta (test) versions of these bodies in the field? I don’t know the implications of what you are telling us.

    Reply

    Greg Reply:

That is most likely what he is implying.

    Reply

    David Reply:

Probably some testing and showing off the beta version to them. The NDA is just so they can not talk about it before Canon announces the camera.

Well, I don’t mind half a year back or forth in the actual release date. I won’t buy it right away at the release anyway. Instead, I plan to wait for 6..12 month until prices drop a bit. :-D

    Reply

    Nigel Reply:

More to the point, waiting until (1) the paying beta testers are placated and (2) reasonable stock enters the retails chain.

It seems a bit late for Olympics. If it’s announced Sept 1, that leaves only 5 months till the Olympics – throw in the fact that it usually takes 3 months for these things to hit shelves from announce date and you’re looking at only 2 months of testing. Fine for a tourist going on a trip, not fine for a pro with his/her career on the line. You may see a few at the olympics if it’s announced at this time, but don’t expect it to be that prevalent… might see some pro with 15 camera’s use it as a test for curling or something less demanding and with a smaller interest level. Don’t expect to see it at figure skating or the Downhill events.

It’s nice to see it coming, but I wouldn’t expect it for the Olympics. The NCAA Final 4 or Opening Day of baseball will be the first time you spot these in the wild if it’s announced in Sept

what do you know you noob

    Reply

    David Reply:

Not neccessarily. Canon will already have shown beta versions to the magazine/news companies and have cut contracts for first delivery. Also, what pro needs two months to test a camera? Maybe a tourist needs two months to test a camera but come on, even that is pushing how long it would likely take. One weekend covering some sports and they’d be up to speed.

    Nigel Reply:

The pros using the camera at the Olympics will be predominantly working for the big agencies (e.g. Reuters) who will have plenty of early bodies. Late stocking for these cams is only a problem for lower tier pros and ams.

Well, saying anyone signed a NDS with Canon doesn’t really say anything, not even what’s its for. It’s just an assumption it has anything to do with a 1D4 release.

  9. Ed Says:

That timing makes sense to me, 5 months is adequate time to get them to photographers for the Olympics. Those who photograph the olympics for major news organizations will get cameras and lenses first, either loaners, or a good deal on them.

Hasn’t Reuters already defected completely to the Nikon camp? At least that was what I heard when the D3 was first announced… :)

    Mik Reply:

There’s been a lot of rubbish talked about the so-called exodus to Nikon and the 1D3 problems.
As expected there’s been a few, some as a result of freebies from Nikon, but its still a largely Canon market.

    Reply

    David Reply:

The D3 is old news. You can bet Canon is already showing off a 1D4 beta and you can bet Canon is looking to have a wall of white on the sidelines for the Olympics. If the 1D4 specs are good enough, and Canon’s timing is right, that is what we will see – again.

    Reply

    Ed Reply:

Supposedly, Nikon gave them a super good deal to get them to switch to the D3.

Canon is likely offering a similar or even better deal, along with a much more capable camera. They may even take the Nikon stuff in trade.

Both Nikon and Canon pro cameras and lenses are great, but when a sales organization wants to see their equipment out there, they may have literal give-aways.

    Reply

    David Reply:

Yep, but they aren’t gonna shoot themselves in the foot either and sacrifice images to the competition by sticking with a camera that’s not as good. It’s gonna have to be a clear edge on the Nikon performance-wise as well. Nikon couldn’t give away their cameras to sports organizations when Canon dominated on performance until the D3 came out as a very good camera. The same will hold true for the 1D4 – it’s gonna have to wow them too.

    Ziggy Reply:

Ed, have you ever heard of anyone really getting a deal from Nikon, or just an internet rumor. For I have talking with Nikon and they tell me of no such deal.

I as well know that they gave away or practically gave away a ton of D3’s -
They did what they had to do in order to get market share and it was good for them…but it still wasn’t enough.

I would like to point out that the people shooting at Olympic games are almost certainly a member of a large organization, like Reuters, or independently CPS members it might be possible that these groups could get mkIV bodies more expeditiously than those looking to buy from retail srores, even if they are just trial loaners, this would help restore the wall of white glass, and the people shooting would almost certainly have other camera bodies with them as backups. it would be a good demonstrator to part of their target market for the camera. Doesn’t mean I’d will happen, but it does make some sort of sense.

  14. KAS Says:

Well, this would a great opportunity for Canon to demonstrate that they can get a camera physically in the hands of many many real photographers shortly after an announcement. Whether they pull it off is another question altogether….but, in the eyes of many, it would be a great “comeback” to actually make the product available.

    Reply

    David Reply:

In the hands of news/magazines is not the same as on stocking retail store shelves but we’ll see.

    Reply

    Scott Reply:

Well Canon generally does make their newly announced models available quickly. The 5DII is an exception, as was the 1DsIII, but the 40D was available 2 or 3 days after announcement, as was the 1DIII, XSi, XTi, XT and pretty much any earlier cam. I`m sure they`ll want their new Pro body available for the Olympics, so being released in the fall makes sense

    KAS Reply:

Getting Rebels out isn’t really a big deal. But if they can get a pro body in the hands of pros and consumers right away, that will really win over the favour of many people…especially those on the internets

    Reply

    David Reply:

except people at x-mas time are buying Rebels, not 1D4’s

    Reply

    Stark-Arts Reply:

why is getting 40,000 rebels out no big deal? but getting out 5000 1D’s would be? that is silly…
In any event you don’t comment at all on the rest of the statement…
My 1D and my 1DII were in my hands very shortly after announcement….
the only cams that have been slow to market are the FF cams…

    Reply

    David Reply:

40,000 Rebels means 40,000 + lens sales too (they sell mostly kits), and given the low build quality on the Rebel, far lower R&D costs, and the cheap construction of the EF-S lenses I’d think their profit margins much higher on it too – so I’m sure its a big deal to Canon. 1D buyers are more likely to already have the lenses they want, it’s using more cutting edge technology so the R&D cost is higher and the chance of early production problems higher which could produce delays.

This is my first Canon product. Overall I am very pleased. I purchased early September 2009 just before a trip to the northwest including Victoria British Columbia. Comments from friends and family after seeing the pictures of whales, harbors, city lights, volcanic mountain peaks, and sunsets on the Oregon coast support the quality of the camera and the ability of an average photographer when coupled with a good camera. I do wish Canon would provide accessories to include U/V Clear Filter to offer basic lens protection, polarized filters to remove the sun reflection from my whale pictures (this would have doubled the quality of the pictures), and lens cap lanyard. Oh, a printed Users Guide sure would be nice. I ended up printing a dozen key pages from the installation disk to carry in the camera bag, a bulky alternative. I would buy the camera again.
