5D Mark II Firmware Update [CR1]

On the set
I’ve received informormation from a few folks that the new 5D Mark II firmware is on location on the Iron Man 2 set. Apparently the cameras are in Morocco at the moment.

They wouldn’t be testng new firmeware at this stage if it wasn’t close to being release. Of course what officially will be in the new firmware is unknown, but often speculated…

We HOPE this FIRMWARE comes SOON, AND it is for FULL MANUAL CONTROL.
THOUSANDOS OF PEOPLE ARE REQUESTING and the COMPETITION is coming right behind and strong, SO CANON HAVE THE GREAT CHANCE TO BE STEPS AHEAD RIGHT NOW.
In the meantime we keep letting Canon know how much we are interested by many ways.

Why would the loyalty of a lot of customers be at risk? Statements like this seem ridiculous to me. Canon never promised manual aperture on the cam, it was never in it’s specs.
If their loyalty is at risk there never was loyalty in the first place. As a still camera it’s an amazing piece of equipment.

Nikon is floating rumours of a firmware release for manual control video for its D90 and D5000. And we know a replacement for the D300 will likely hit the streets by x-mas. So, Canon better get moving.

Shots from the 5D Mark II have already been used on big feature films. It’s not out of reason to think it’s being used as production gear for the cut.

Fox Searchlight’s Notorious for starters. Not only features but also on quite a few commercials and even mixed with video from the RED One.

The only 5D2 + RED footage has been Laforet’s.

Probably using it for digital looking effect? Something like helmet cam maybe? Or for doing testing? I’m sure Canon is using this for PR. The pessimist in me wonders if they aren’t just using the 5D2 as a body to test firmware that will be used in future hardware.

This is my suspicion. Full manual firmware tested on a body available now for future hardware. This would piss people off, but totally plausible.

AF points have nothing to do with firmware. You need to hacksaw an old 1Ds and integrate the AF module into 5D2. I am sure this could be technically possible given the right skill.

The 5D2 isn’t going to be used for filming any movies. It is limited to 1080×1920 – not a film format. People want 4K with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, not 16:9. Movies are not shot in 30fps either. TV commercials, documentaries… yes.

People making movies will use whatever tools they need to do what they need to do. Some 8mm film has been used for big production for specific effect. If they think that they have a need for a 5DII on the set, they will use it.
Also, dont forget DVD special features & making of. It would be ideal to shoot those with a 5DII

Certainly true.
That silly labelling of “pro”, “prosumer”, etc.. is more marketing stuff.
Real professionals don’t rely only in such kind of classification when choosing the equipment.
Results are what matters (and of course the budget needed to achieve them)
We still keep showing Canon how many people are requesting FULL MANUAL CONTROL.

Not quite true Alex. Most movies go through a Digital Intermediate these days, which is almost always a scan at 2K resolution. So even though the 5D2 is not capable of 35mm resolution, that is not really relevant as it matches the down-res’d quality of any DI-based film (nearly all).
In the “old days” when movies went the optical route and prints were made from a dupe negative shots done on the 5D2 would be less useful.
Also, you are incorrect about the aspect ratio. Although 2.35:1 is used among other wider ratios, the standard is 1.85:1 – the Mark2 produces a ratio of 1.78:1 (HD) which, with a slight crop, matches the 1:85:1 ratio.

I have 2 sceenplays and want to do my own movie. Is this crazy? Will I shoot and shoot only to find I am wasting my time? I made one short …with help on 35 and loved it when in film school. I am so tired of waiting to see my words come to life…I live in NJ. Anonymous seems to have a handle on this. Thank you, Patrick flexxxxxx@optonline.net

If you know what it takes to film a short on 35, then you have an idea what it will take to do a feature. You can probably shoot the whole thing in two weeks to a month if you’re working every day.

Yes, I had a lot of help…but I am now searching for a camera. Everytime I post here or on Nikon I must sound like a broken record. I always say the digital films made with the 5d2 etc have a much better look than anything I have seen in digital before, which I know has a lot to do with the lenses and maybe the sensor being so big but dont know how big it is with good hd video cameras. Even Very expensive units. No one seems to agree with me. I can spend up to 15,000 if I had to, but if I like the look, why not have a killer camera too. The talk on Nikon is always about the focus. Also, can I put the limited time shots together as scenes are not usualy very long anyway. As for focus, I would just set it anyway for static shots, like I would for filmaking. It looks like crap when the focus changes except when you pull focus from one object to another.

I would like to point out a couple of holes in this story if I could. First of all the source for this information must be at the very least unreliable because Iron Man 2 is not shooting in Morocco, but in Monaco, which is quite different. Secondly they are not shooting the film 1.85 as it has been suggested, but 2.40. Thirdly it would be completely unreasonable to shoot green screen plates with this camera simply because of the significant lack of resolution. We are talking about a major feature film that is to be released theatrically, mixing a 1080p image cropped to 2.40, with super 35 and vista vision. Not likely.
