That my friend is a glimpse of what the future will be. This is what it looks like when you finally break through a ships shields. Now it’s time to raid the ship and reprogram the system…….

Hudson, the hacker who did this, Thank you sir!

I wish that they could hack the 50D firmware to allow video recording at all. I don’t want it to be a production-use type situation, just something fun to play around with. :(

for that case is much easier, less time consuming and cost effective to buy a 60D when it is released :)

that will be soon, and of course much less expensive than a 5D Mk II, with shorter cycle time too.

I wish they could hack the 40D firmware to offer some 50D features – like microadjustment.

Why not simply buy a 50D? It’s in the shops right now…

I’d settle for world peace, but if I can’t have that I guess a new 1D mk IV would do as well :)

CHDK for Canon DSLRs! Woo hoo! Canon may not like it but they would be silly to prevent it. It will help Canon win the hearts of some gearheads and geeks over Nikon. My CHDK has turned my SX10 in to a far superior camera.

This hack is about modified firmware, which CHDK is not.

I presure that more engineers/hackers would be willing to help if the procedure for firmware decryption was described somewhere.

I’ve seen at least two pieces of code for encrypting and decrypting the 5DMKII firmware (with the appropriate keys) … to be honest, that’s the easiest part by far. Understanding, modifying and writing ARM assembly code is something different, though, and there are definately less people out there that can do that competently (in the way that would be required to hack the firmware). It’s pretty easy just to change the string that contains the firmware version or to turn something ‘on’ or ‘off’ … but to write a custom menu or something like that, though (which will almost certainly be necessary) is definately in a different league altogether. I’ll be genuinely impressed by the first person that gets that done, though I’m sure it will eventually happen.

Good blog. I got a lot of effective data. I’ve been following this technology for awhile. It’s fascinating how it keeps shifting, yet some of the core components remain the same. Have you seen much change since Google made their latest acquisition in the domain?
