Thank you so much for the information. I do have quite a lot of EF glass covering the entire range from wide angle (14mm) through to telephoto (400mm). Is there anyone out there who has actually used EF lenses in this way? How do they perform against the video lenses?

"By using the optional EF adapter, you can match your XL2 to any one of the huge assortment of Canon EOS photography lenses. Since these lenses are designed for 35mm still photo cameras, and because the XL2's image plane is a bit smaller than one-third inch in size, there is a magnification factor of at least 7.8 applied to the focal length of the EOS lens, depending on which aspect ratio you're using. For instance, if you mounted a 200mm EOS lens on your XL2, the effective focal length works out to 1560mm, which is a much longer telephoto shot than the standard 20x video lens is capable of. When you use Canon's really big EOS lenses, such as the 400mm, 500mm and 600mm lenses, the resulting magnification is like turning the XL2 into a telescope... perfect for some limited applications such as surveillance or wildlife videography. It's also possible to mount a wide-angle prime lens, combined with a wide-angle adapter, to achieve a medium focal length video lens with the quality of Canon EOS glass."

http://www.dvinfo.net/canonxl2/articles/article04.php

Adapter here:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/146134-REG/Canon_3162A002_EF_Adapter_XL_for.html

costs like $450

long story short, pay half a grand to put EF lenses on your XL2, XL2's lenses won't fit on a EOS body, and if they did they wouldn't completely cover a APS-C sensor.

Here's a question for you all. Now don't be too harsh if this is a stupid question as I only have stills cameras (5DmarkII, 30D) at the moment but am considering having a look at a second hand XL2. Are the Canon EF stills lenses interchangable or usable on the XL2 and visa versa?

Go out and buy a video camera ... you guys that just like photography just don't get it. Have you compare the footage of this camera vs the canon xha1 or the Panasonic hvx 200 of anything. that's what I thought you don't have a clue. Instead of criticizing try to learn the facts. This camera shoot great video, but there is little control for artist to shoot creatively. And canon can do something about it. I'ts like having a beautiful wife and she can't cook at all. It's good but you still sacrifice a lot.

Um, this thread is about a new Canon "video camera" not a DSLR...and the RED's $3700 price for a complete 3K video camera with lens is definately in the ball park of Canon's pro line. I will give you the "oh crap what have I got myself into" for price on all the infrastructure you'll have to build for it though.

"Personally, I think 96% of 5DM2 owners are still photographers. Canon’s not too concerned about the 4% crying out for manual control in video mode."

Ding! A winner. I have a Mark II, it's awesome. I point it at things, hit the shutter and art just comes out. I'm spending more time shooting and less time 'shopping afterwords, which is what I think everyone wants.

I've taken, as of this morning, 1283 images and exactly 7 of those are videos. Including 3 the day I got it just to try it out. This is a little over one half a percent.

Is it fun? Yes. Is it great to have when you need it? You bet. Would I like to have full manual control? Definitely! Do I really need it on what I purchased as a still camera? No.

I'm fully aware that many people want full manual control. I've signed the petition, I've e-mailed and called Canon and spoken to my local camera sales rep. I've done what I can at this point. But honestly, I'd rather just be out shooting than on the phone talking about it. If I wanted full manual video, I would have bought a video camera, not spending time and money to kludge together a solution on a device that it isn't designed for.

Go out, rent a real HD video camera and just shoot on that, it's just easier and it will look just as good, but without the pain and anguish of making something work in a way it wasn't designed for.

LOL, it made me laugh when I read some of you guys thinking, first of all, what RED is going to do will not make Canon run around like a little girl cause the price of a RED DSMC will be soo expensive that even your whining will put to a halt.

Besides, if video is like sooo important to some of you, why don't get a professional video camera instead? It has a better grip, better video recording options and besides, think from a business point of view kay instead like a little children, why the heck would Canon, who also makes video camera both professional and non professional to create a camera that has a great potential of cannibalizing its video camera division sales?

And of course Canon would be promoting its HD video feature in dSLR, its called marketing! But doesn't necessarily mean they are oblige to give the user the expected video controls.

"The percentage of people who bought and will buy this camera mainly because the video feature is not 4% as someone say, FAR from it..."

Don't keep us in suspense. What is the percentage?

This is just a fabricated personal wish list. How can you tell? Where it says Canon is developing CCD sensors for a Pro camera. There is an unspoken agreement between Canon/Panasonic/Sony that Canon will not compete in the "Pro" market segment - and that is why Sony and panasonic will support their lenses on their cameras. The prosumer camera market is a different story. This is obviously a fan boy's wish list as to what he wants to see from canon.
