UPDATE
A few points I’d like to make about this spec list and how it compares to the T1i.
- If this spec list is true, then I’d expect a firmware update for the T1i. Adding 24fps or 30fps 1080p video.
- I’d also expect the T1i to have a bigger and brighter viewfinder.
- There will be probably be software differences withing the cameras like the XS and XSi.
- The 3fps would probably be for jpg, retaining the 1.5fps in RAW of the XS.
- Perhaps no face detection LiveView focusing.

The Good News
I have received a fair number of emails from various places around the globe about an upgrade to the 24-70 f/2.8L.
Two known sources say the lens is for sure in development.
The biggest word of such a lens come from Denmark. According to an email, someone at Canon DK let slip that the lens wouldn’t be in stock anymore due to an upgrade. The same sort of information was apparently passed onto a CPS member in Germany as well.
The Grain of Salt
It’s rare (but does happen) that a Canon Rep would ever know of a coming product announcement. Let alone spill the beans about it.
Another report said there’s issues in production with the new 24-70, and that’s why it has yet to see the light of day. The issue is in the new coating(s) for the lens elements.
I don’t post everything I get about the 24-70 IS, just because I have heard about an upgrade for years now. There has been a lot of tidbits coming in recently however.
cr
I received a straight to the point email. It stated we can expect an announcement from Canon on Tuesday, June 30, 2009.
What will be announced?
Not what you want!
T1/2000D should be making its way into the mainstream.
No spec list was sent, I expect one soon.

A sensor comparison
The folks at DxO have finished their comparison of the T1i/500D and D5000 sensor.
The winner? The fiesty D5000!

From NL
This spec list comes from a Canon Camera tester.
* 1.3 crop
* Images ~16MP
* ISO 50-26500
* 8MP sRAW1 format providing images that seem to best 1D3 files in detail [typo corrected]
* Very clean images at ISO 3200. 6400/12800 take further processing very well
* Slightly faster FPS than 1D3 in real life shooting
* AF greatly improved and very good in low light (actual comment was ‘Nikon fast’ ;-)
* Liveview AF – not up to fast sports use, but very usable otherwise
* Video as with 5D2
* Screen as per 5D2
* Ergonomic improvements with grips – some buttons moved
* Feels faster and more responsive in nearly all aspects of real use.

1D4 Frame Rate
An anonymous email says the new 1D4 will be a 12fps camera. This is the reason it is staying APS-H.
60D
New battery and battery grip?
Apparently so.
The Bp-511 has been around a long time and is overdue to be replaced with a chipped and more expensive battery. A new battery grip will contain new ergonomic features. Those features are unknown at this time.
2000D
New source says the new Rebel will not have a tilt and swivel screen.
Peru
I’m in Cusco at the moment and having a wonderful time. I’ve only spent 1 full day here.
Thanks to everyone for the donations, I will post a pic of the kids you helped later in the week.

1D4 & 60D
I received an email that suggested select 1D4 and 60D’s are being tested with 3″ OLED screens. Most of the test cameras are equipped with LCD screens.
USB 3.0
1D4 to be USB 3.0 ready. The initial camera shipments may come with it locked out, and be later turned on with a firmware upgrade as the spec reaches the masses sometime in 2010.
note: I don’t have the technical knowledge to know if you can turn on usb 3.0 at a later date. If anyone has some insight, i’d appreciate it.
GPS & Wifi
The source says GPS will be built into the 1D4 and not the 60D. Wifi will be an addon product for both cameras.
Announcement
The same email states August 25, 2009 for the official announcement.

Lots coming!
According to Jouko Tuominen is new CEO of Canon Svenska AB, Canon plans to launch 100 new products in the fall.
I’ll assume it isn’t 100 new cameras!

It’s up

Canon EOS Rebel T1i
“If you currently own an EOS 450D or another fairly recent entry-level DSLR from an image quality point of view there is not necessarily a need to upgrade to the EOS 500D. However, the HD video mode, new high-resolution screen or extended ISO range make it easier to justify the expense if you’re likely to use these features. For anybody buying their first DSLR the 500D is an easy recommendation but you might want to have a look at the Nikon D5000 as well. It comes with a similar feature set to the 500D (‘only’ 720P video though) and performs slightly better in low light.”
A pretty favorable review.
