June 11th, 2009 Posted in Canon General
Lots coming!
According to Jouko Tuominen is new CEO of Canon Svenska AB, Canon plans to launch 100 new products in the fall.
I’ll assume it isn’t 100 new cameras!

Interesting article. Presumably, they may release some of the items originally planned for release in the spring this fall along with the regular fall items. They cut back on production, and now are having shortages. Anyone who has tried to buy a lens lately can tell you that many popular models are hard to find at low prices.
This is mostly PR to say that they are still in business in spite of the world economy, but its also a sign that companies are seeing strong indications that things are picking up.

1. Maybe now we will see a pro level 1.6 crop, pro AF, Pro weather seals, 7 FPS, Video full manual, 24p, 25p, 30, 60, 1080, priced accordingly.
2. Maybe now we will see a pro level FF small body, pro AF, Pro weather seals, pro bracketing, 16MP, 7 FPS, full manual video, all the goodies, in body IS for non-IS primes, priced accordingly.
New lenses:
14-24 2.8
100-400 4-4.8 IS
200-400 4 IS
50 1.4 II
85 1.4

I doubt that any of that is coming or even planned. While it might be nice, Canon is not changing the basic nature of their models. If there is a new model, it will have a new name. You can get most of those from Nikon … for a price, Canon would not sell them for less.
Pro models will cost $5,000 and up, they are not going to turn a consumer model into a pro model. If there is a lower cost semi pro model similar to the D300, it will cost $2,000. Right now, the XXD series fits between the D90 and the D300. this is because Nikon has not chosen to compete with it. They have publically stated that they want to pick areas that Canon does not cover rather than direct competition.

“[...] Nikon has not chosen to compete with it. They have publically stated that they want to pick areas that Canon does not cover rather than direct competition.”
And Canon are being very obliging by continuing not to cover those areas. However, you have to wonder how long it can last. Canon have a huge price gap between the xxD and xD lines: you can get a 40D for little more than … no wait … I just went to confirm that a 40D costs about $850 at B&H, but they have the 40D body marked as “Discontinued”. That normally means only one thing….
Anyway, the Nikon D300 fills a gap that Canon cannot leave open forever, or can they? A new EOS 60D would fill that price gap for a few months, but then the price will fall and the gap will become very obvious again. On the other hand, what should Canon fill the gap with? A pro-level APS-C camera or an even more basic FF camera? What could you take from the 5DII to make it cheaper?
Maybe Canon figure that the gap is just right: customers feel the pain if they try to upgrade to a 5D, but enough of them do that the lack of a model in the middle makes more profit for Canon in the long run. Maybe Nikon’s D300 helps to bridge that gap psychologically: xxD owners think that something like the D300 is what they want and the Canon 5D is not too far beyond a D300 in price.

It would be very easy for Canon to fit a camera between a Nikon D300 and Canon 5D2 and not reduce sales of the 50D or 5d2.
Take everything in the Nikon D300 and put in a Canon 14MP 1.3 sensor, for $2000 US. (You do know that the Nikon D300 is a 1.5 corp camera right, so there is no need to go FF against it.)
Regarding the Nikon D700, Canon can take everything in the Nikon D700 and put in a 16mp FF sensor, for $3000. Then photogs that want MP will buy the 5D2, and photogs that need a better body and FPS will buy this new camera.
Doesn’t seem that hard to figure out to me.

EF 24-70mm 2.8 L *IS* USM, how much would *that* weigh? LOL! At what point do you need to start tripoding the IS glass? ;-)

It’s not that hard to get close to 100:
Five new consumer printers and three new consumer “all-in-one” devices:
- 23 different new ink cartridges for the new printers
- 17 new paper SKUs for the new printers
5 new consumer digicams:
- adds up to 14 “new” models including color/finish variations
- 17 new “accessories” for the new digicams
Two new DSLRS
A couple new SLR lenses
A few new projectors
A few new “network video” solutions
A few new scanners
Pad up the rest with new calculators…

When they talk new products, they don’t count the thousands of accessories that go with New products.
Canon has a ton of professional and industrial products, including video cameras and pro lenses, camcorders, as well as office products, copiers, etc.
Unlike Nikon, Cameras are only a small percentage of the total Canon product line.

They need to make a 18mm or 20mm F1.4 prime.
Also make a 85mm F1.4 and a 135mm F1.4. So you got the whole range. Zeiss has that for film but its 270k! :)

The size of the front element for an 18mm prime at f/1.4 would be enormous, unless you could live with 25% of the image being a dark circle.

Would something like a 12-70mm f/2.8 will ever be made?

Not likely, as there’s optical and technical limits for those. Wide-angle requires a bulky, round front element (to bend all those rays to the other end), and if you throw the 70mm-setting through that, it’s going to be horribly deformed. Do things the other way round, and vignetting + distortion becomes a nightmare. 12-20 or perhaps 30 is max, before things look bad. Oh, and the f/2.8 is a problem as well ;) Try to calculate what ginormous front elements are required, by just looking at the current lenses (16-35 f/2.8, and then increase things a bit more)
An EF-S prime would be cool though, then 20 f/1.4 or a sharp f/1.8 would do for me. Just for the times you want to shoot wide-angle candlelight stuff ;)

would like to see a 20 1.4 or even 1.8 L or maybe an 18 would also work for me.
Would like to see them come with a 200-400 f/4 – would be a great lens for sports/wildlife
would like to see a 5d with the 1d2 AF system
would like to see a 24-85 2.8 or (better for me but harder to build) a 20 – 70 2.8. Really don’t want/need IS – just make it sharp WIDE OPEN where people shoot fast lenses.
That last one is key to me – the WIDE OPEN SHARP LENSES – zeiss and leica can do it…canon can do it. Telling me how great a lens is at 5.6 means nothing to me…they are all pretty sharp by that point…
i want a 580EXIII that doesn’t produce RF noise that competes with the new PW’s
that is my list for now…

1D4 + an updated long white lens and that’s all for this fall. A slim chance of a 60D + an EF-S prime.
The rest is just wishes. The new 24-70 and 35/1.4 will come out with the 1Ds4 early next year.

Love to see a new 300 f4 IS II with silent focus and improved IS (that performs with tripod) – great lens but in need of an upgrade.
How about a new 400 f4.5 IS with that sweet sliding lens hood, it’s such a great design.

I won’t hold my breath on any of it.
The discrepancy between launch dates and availability from Canon has become something of a joke.
Never mind products loaded with bugs.
I’m done with their sordid marketing tactics.

I just wish Canon would update some lenses specifically for their consumer line. I’d like to see a EF-S 30/35mm 1.8, an updated EF 50mm 1.4. Nikon are releasing some good glass as of late, has Canon been sleeping? I wish now I went for a D90 rather than a 40D. :|
Photography is a hobby to me, I can’t afford L glass but that doesn’t mean I should suffer..!
