New Lens Talk [CR1]

June 6th, 2009 | 43 Comments | Posted in Canon Lenses

Prime time
Can we expect 2 new Canon L primes in the fall? According to an email this morning the 35L and 135L will both receive upgrades.

Both lenses will incorporate new build design and coatings. We should see them for the fall I’m told.

Macro
There is a new long focal range macro lens being developed with IS. “It would be in the 180mm to 200mm range.”

Big White Lenses
The same source claims no new super telelphoto primes will be launched. However, new 300mm, 400mm, 500mm & 600mm lenses will be tested in Vancouver for the 2010 games and in South Africa for the World Cup.

CR’s Take
The 35L is definately coming, I think with a 1Ds4 launch. I don’ think we’d see a 135L II at the same time.

I do find the testing of the big white lenses to be logical. I can’t see Canon launching in the fall and producing enough to meet the demand.

Canon to revive shelved Nagasaki camera plant plan

June 5th, 2009 | 10 Comments | Posted in Business of Photography, Canon General

TOKYO, June 5 (Reuters) – Japan’s Canon Inc said on Friday it has decided to revive a shelved plan to build a $180 million digital camera factory in Nagasaki, southern Japan, on solid demand for digital single-lens reflex cameras.

Details on the timing of the plant’s start-up and any changes in the investment will be announced later in the day, a Canon spokesman said.

The plant, to make both digital compacts and digital single-lens reflex cameras, was originally to have an annual production capacity of 4 million cameras.

Thanks!

You guys know everything
I’m quite happy I asked for help on the site. I found tons of backpacks I didn’t realize existed.

I have a winner (for now).

I chose the Kata R-104.

Why? Because I could get it at cost and will have it in time, guaranteed! Sometimes ordering from the US can bring a lot of delays. Not everything suggested here has a Canadian distributor.

I think I will be ordering the Gura Gear Kiboko when I return and see how it is. Bummer about their backorder.

Tamrac and Tenba make some stuff that looks very interesting to. I will be seeking out stores with their stuff in stock.

So thanks again and back to the rumors!

I Need Help

June 4th, 2009 | 73 Comments | Posted in Canon Rumors Site Information

I need  a backpack
I am having a horrible time trying to find a hiking/trekking backpack for my camera stuff. I’m heading to Peru in 10 days and still have no solution. The pack obviously has to suit carry-on regulations.

So I need your help people.

Backpacks I’ve dismissed
1) Anything made by Lowepro
- I find their bags horrendously uncomfortable. They don’t sit right on my shoulders. Their tripod holder is still pretty useless. Their bags are also heavy. I’ve seen a lot of failed zippers after mere months of use. They just aren’t what they used to be.

2) ThinkTank Streetwalker Pro
- Fantastically light backpack, fits everything I need it to. Great build quality and functional design, it’s just not built for someone 6′4. It sits far too low on my shoulders and I’d be in pain within an hour. If it was 2″ longer, I’d own it.

3) Crumpler Karachi Outpost
- This pack was fantastically comfortable for me. It has the best tripod holder I’ve ever come across for a backpack. The turtle shell design inside is its downfall, just very bad use of space inside the bag. It does appear very well made.

What’s coming with me
1D Mark III (RRS L Plate)
5D Mark II (no grip, RRS L Plate)
17-40 f/4L
70-200 f/2.8L IS
1.4x TC
35 f/1.4L
It would be nice if the 85L II would fit if I needed it to.
Gitzo GT3541LS
10″ Netbook

Bags I’m looking into, but cant find in stock anywhere.
1) Kata R-102, R-103, R-104
- If anyone has experience with these, I’d love to hear it.

If there’s a company I should look at, let me know.

Thanks all!

“The Lord of Darkness” [CR1]

June 4th, 2009 | 101 Comments | Posted in Canon 60D

A new xD
The title of this post is the marketing name of a new dSLR.

The source says this is not the 60D.

Specs:
16.8mp
1.3x Crop
DIGIC IV
ISO 100-6400 (50-25600)
3.2″ LCD
19 Point AF
HDMI Out
Liveview
720p HD Movies @ 30fps
VF 100%
Weather Sealing like 5D2
EF Lenses Only

CR’s Take
A cheaper APS-H camera has always been a rumor.  D300/300s/400 killer? Canon certainly needs it.

Wish list specs?

Hopefully someone else I know will corroborate this.

5D Mark II Firmware 1.1.0 Available

June 1st, 2009 | 66 Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II, Canon Firmware

Looks Good
I just shot a video with the 5D Mark II & 35L at f/4. Woooo!

All the Fixes & Features

CR's 5D Mark II Updated

CR's 5D Mark II Updated

1. Includes a function to enable the manual exposure setting when shooting movies.
When shooting movies in manual (M) mode, the shutter speed *1, the lens aperture value *2, and the ISO speed *3 can be freely set to allow a greater flexibility.

Notes:
1 Shutter speed range: 1/30 sec. to 1/4000 sec.
2 Lens aperture range: Maximum to minimum aperture value of the lens used
3 ISO speed range:
Auto: ISO 100 to 6400 set automatically
Manual: ISO 100 to 6400, H1

2. Disables the function of the depth-of-field preview button when images are played back or when the menu screen is displayed on the LCD panel.
*There are indications that images being reviewed or the menu screen may suddenly disappear from the LCD panel. As this phenomenon may be caused by accidentally pressing the depth-of-field preview button, this firmware update disables the function of the depth of field preview to address this issue.

3. Fixes a phenomenon where the peripheral illumination of images cannot be properly corrected, even if the images were captured with the lens peripheral illumination correction function set to Enable.
Firmware Version 1.1.0 fixes a phenomenon where peripheral illumination may not be properly corrected due the type of lens used and shooting conditions.

4. Fixes the algorithms of the Auto Lighting Optimizer function when Custom Function C.Fn II-3 Highlight tone priority is enabled.

5. Fixes incorrect indications on the Arabic, Romanian, Spanish, and Ukrainian menu screens.

6. Changes the battery information displayed on the camera when using the optional Battery Grip BG-E6.
*If only one LP-E6 battery pack is installed in the Battery Grip BG-E6, the battery information for the empty battery slot shows the error message, Cannot communicate with battery. However, with this firmware update, this error message no longer appears, even if only one LP-E6 battery pack is installed.

New 1D & 1Ds in 2009? New “G” Thinking?

From DSLR Magazine

***This is a Google Translation. The grammar and spelling may be poor***

As published in our of our April 23, Canon shall, before the end of the year 2009, two new high-end professional models.

Without making estimarr their names, the first model will be presented in August, and will be “reporting”, ie, fast, and probably with a smaller sensor size of 24 x 36 mm.
The second model, by pure logic, is an evolution of the EOS-1Ds Mark III, and imagine what the issue is offered plus. Expectations are more megapixels, Canon continues as “focused” on making the competition a professional medium format cameras. Perhaps what most potential users expect the system-EOS is that for once the new cameras do not give serious problems from the outset.

In another vein, it seems that again a little sanity into the minds of some designers, and thus is only known to the future development or alternative to the current G10, offers a more sensible number of megapixels, with a view to higher image quality. Staying around the 9-megapixel, maybe you could do that, for example, the noise does not make an appearance as early as in the current G10.

Wait and see.

Our take
All signs seem to be pointing to a fall launch of the 1D Mark IV.

I have conflicting reports about the 1Ds. I’ve been told not to expect that until 2010. It will be priced in the D3x launch price range.

Canon is definitely developing a higher end compact based on CMOS technology. There is a good chance we’ll be seeing a larger sensored compact for the Christmas season.
