1D Mark III & 1Ds Mark III Done? [CR1]
July 29th, 2009 Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4, Canon 1Ds Mark 4
New pro bodies on the horizon?
I received an email today from someone in the Twin Cities area who works in a higher end retail environment. Apparently they were privy to some information saying both EOS-1 bodies would be discontinued soon if they hadn’t already.
I tried to get this information better substantiated. No luck yet.
Both EOS-1’s at the same time? Why not? They’re basically the same shell with a different mirror box & sensor. The public opinion of the current Mark III’s is less that desired. Canon doesn’t currently have a flagship “wow” camera.
1D replacement? Yes.
1Ds replacement? I’m not so sure.

I hope this is true, so Canon can then come out with a 16 mp, FF, 7 FPS, weather sealed, small body, pro AF, 3D for me in March 2010.

why not 10fps??
the 1D already does that…
I think why not give us a electronic crop… that would be awesome!

Ugh, what’s the point of an electronic crop?! Wouldn’t you rather have all the pixels and crop yourself? The only way that makes any sense is if you wanted to use EF-S lenses. But I’m willing to bet if your in the market for a 1DM4, you aren’t likely to have very many non-L series lenses.

well if it reduced file size and therefore increased buffer it could be useful if you’re sports shooting something you you’ll need to crop to at least a certain extent. could have some uses, I always prefer options, even if I leave it turned off. Also it is physically not possible to use EF-S lenses on FF mirror.

Nikon figured out how to do it, maybe Canon can.
Really, the electronic crop would not help anything. As a sports shooter, it would only cause more problems. If i needed a smaller file size, that’s what the lower JPEG settings are for. Now, if the camera’s viewfinder was able to ‘zoom’ when masking for this crop mode, then I could see some advantage. Otherwise, you wouldn’t find too many sports shooters complaining about the buffer size of even the 1DM3. Really, it’s a camera, not an M60.

Some people prefer wysiwyg. Why not see what the crop will be while shooting? Sounds cool to me.

The Neutral Observer waits to see the technology that will hopefully make it to the more consumer oriented bodies in the next few years. He is also very happy that Canon might be able to close this chapter in its recent history.

Canon is so secretative that they only tell their best retailers the details a few days at most of a upcoming release. They typically do not cancel the existing model for several months after the release of a new model.
So I think this is just another rumor, which, afterall, is what I expect and am happy with that.

I recently had my 1d MIII in for a service. During a phone conversation with a tech, he stated that the MIII’s electronics were “ancient”, his word. I suspect that whatever is out there coming at us will probably blow our socks off.

Maybe they’re releasing both because they dropped the APS-H crop sensor and now they both have FF???

this would make the most sense, allowing for maximum streamline between production lines. same body and internals all except for the sensor and firmware(although the vast majority of this could be shared as well). APS-H was a good compromise when it was first conceived, back when technical constraints, rather than marketing made FF DSLRs very expensive, now that the sensors can be produced with good return and not terribly expensively it is time for it to bow out, having served its purpose as well as it could have.

This one (the cam is even on stock):
http://www.digitec.ch/
I’m not sure that this has something to do with a discontinuation of the 1DsIII. Digitech is not a specialized camera dealer and their stock policy regarding pro cameras is somewhat inconsistant: for quite some time they had both 1Ds and 1D on stock, then for some months none of both or just 1D bodies…

What? 1Ds4, 1D4, 60D, 70-200 f/2.8 IS MkII, 35 f/1.4 MkII, macro lens with IS… That’s a long list of stuff to release in half a year. Does not sound too credible, does it?

I have no Ef-s glass, not that I wouldn’t like some of it,
just that I plan on going FF soon and Ef-s has no upgrade path… a dead end.
now if Canon made the xxD line pro quality, with full weather sealing, pro AF, and a higher grade Ef-s line…

I agree, but if 1D and 1Ds lines are both FF, and very similar they’re just developing one camera and two different sensors, plus two lenses and a XXD body, which is mostly a tweak and a little upgrade, not really a redesign like the 1D will be and you’re done, seems doable to me, though it might be spread out over a little bit.

2 FF top end cameras? the differentiation would be so small, it be hard to sell the 1Ds series.
if they decide to do so, then it probably make sense to push APS-H down the XXD series. that would really hit the competition.

I’m shooting with a 30D right now and I would love it if a 60D came out with a 1.3x crop but could utilize the EF-S lenses. talk about hitting nikon and sony hard, that’s what would do it, even priced at $2000 between the 50D and 5DMKII

Not really. If the D is between 16 and 21 mp and the Ds is in the high 20’s then it would still make a difference for a lot of people.

I think the 1DsIV could be a medium format competitor at around 32 mpx with the 1DIV doing nicely at 16. That would be significant differentiation. Now all we’d need are 64 gb Sandisk Extreme V’s to handle those 80mb files.

Have you heard of Nikon D3 and Nikon D3x? same Idea, lots of market differentiation there. not to insult, but only stupid people don’t realize that if camera A has 1/2 the resolution of Camera B and twice the motordrive speed that the cameras are targeted to the same people, regardless of physical sensor size.

Convergence makes sense. With FF in both heritage D and heritage Ds I can see a good deal of commonality. But would moving D from APS-H to FF really make for convergence?
I can see room for both FF D (lower resolution, higher frame rate) and FF D (higher resolution, lower frame rate). Hell, even throw in electronic crop on the D, I can live with (or without) that. But would this really call for both lines to be EOL’ed at the same time?

I shoot all kinds of stuff with all kinds of cameras. I am a working photographer who shoots for advertising and corporate client as well as to make images for my own books about photography. Over the last two years I’ve been using small cameras like the Canon G10 and the SX10 for more and more of my work. In the studio, shooting set up shots or small products these cameras shine by dint of their easy to use Live View and increased depth of field. When I bought the SX 10 it was for the long range of the zoom lens which meant I could shoot anything from a construction site to tight shots of the cabins at the top of the construction cranes. I’ve done some portraits with studio lights and an SX10 and they were also very usable. I wish the SX 10 and SX 20 had raw file capability but they don’t. That just means I have to be a bit more careful about WB and exposure. I’ve used the SX10 at outdoor swim meets and found that the lens performs better than expected right out to the end.
