I have had the XSi for about 3 months now and I am thouroughly impressed with it. This is my first DSLR and I was a little wary about going with a brand-new and untested camera, but I have always like Canon (I used an ELAN II in High School and I bought a SD600 about 2 years ago to take snapshots of my son). Overall, I have not been disappointed with the quality of the photos that the XSi produces. The IS lens works great and I have taken some pretty amazing photos (for me at least). I do have just a couple of issues, both good and bad, that I think those who are looking at buying this may want to know.

Big as in bigger sensor. The 5D2 sensor is 24.0 x 36.0 mm, it could have *potentially* blown the Red One out of the water. The fact Red can get 4K out of a smaller sensor was my point there as Canon has limited the video size to H.264 1920x1080 AND on top of that they crippled the HDMI output so you can not capture to a higher bit rate or even monitor the video you're shooting in HD - it only *plays* in HD through the HDMI port after it has been saved to H.264.

Depends on what you mean by BIG. The Canon 5D MkII has a 21 Megapixel sensor and the RED 1 has a 12 Megapixel sensor (24.4mm x 13.7mm).

The Canon 5D MkII shoots HD Video (1920x1080). The RED 1 can deliver 4K, 3K, 2K as well as HDTV.

BTW 4k is the length of the long side, so 4,000 has much more resolution than 1920.

So which one is really bigger??? And can provide the better picture???

I'm currently shooting a feature with the 5D2. Follow focus even at @ 50 f/2 is a challenge. You might think you got it, but when you check the footage later...

Of course, the camera is so sharp a little softness isn't always a bad thing.

Wow, thanks for everyone's comments! It means a lot to us that you are participating in this conversation.

We really appreciate everyones input and will be updating our blog with your findings.

The blog post was made after we took many hours to research and find out if anyone had made any US TV commercials entirely on the 5D mark II. We felt we did our due diligence in making sure all our claims were correct. In addition to our research we have a few friends in the US TV commercial industry and they were also surprised to hear us make that claim; after a few days of them asking around they too were not able to turn anything up either. We found many ads that had some use of the 5D mark II, and some non US ads on the 5D mark II. Yes I do agree we were splitting hairs, but we were careful with our claim.

Of course I've been known to be wrong in the past, and I know I'll be wrong in the future... so I'll be visiting every link you all have posted and will update our blog post with your findings.

Again I really appreciate all of your input, and keep posting links here to other commercials. It is great to see what everyone is doing with this great camera.

I had not seen the Marlins commercial before today (and you'd think I would have seen just about all of them LOL), but maybe I'm being technical, but it seems like the Marlin's commercial is local and I think the Jinx one is national.

There have been lots of commercials shot, and I posted a Nike one, but I think that was web only.

A lot of it is just being the first to make the claim... after all, the guy who claimed the first "feature film" and got tons of publicity hadn't even started filming it when he made the claim... but it got him the title and the publicity :)

@Ed, thanks for pointing to the planet5D wiki too :)

- The 5D Mark II is widely being used since months ago for professional purposes.

Some of those works will be available to the public in late 2009 or 2010

This camera is really an exception of the line, the first in its specific class, and that's why so many people requested the "full manual control" for over 6 months.

- Take a look at: http://5dmark2.wordpress.com

You will find a bit more information about that, what Canon had, what will not give, and the ML project.

The 5D2 actually has a bigger sensor than Red, and the Canon could have potentially out-performed the Red One but it's limited by the H.264 format. Too bad they disabled direct HDMI HD output.

Well, do the Sprint commercials where they make shapes out of LED lights count? I'm pretty sure this is a DSLR.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czfWx0V-Wm0

I believe Jim Frohna shot those (used to work with him when he was a gaffer). Or are we only talking about HD video?

A buddy of mine is shooting an airline commercial next week.

Main unit camera is a Red One with Zeiss Master Primes.

Second unit camera is a 5D MK II with Canon lenses.

Will be interesting to see how it cuts together.
