I’m sure it will have the new Hybrid IS. Smart move considering Nikon is about to release a new AF-S Nikkor 70-200 mm f/2.8G ED VR II with faster AF and nano coating.

Agreed. Great move Canon. Now keep it under $2000

I am glad I did not get mine yet – was waiting with this lens for next year, as I have some more important purchases atm. :)

I have the non-IS version, now I might have to upgrade :)

as long as they keep it at the same price as the current IS version…

Doubt the same price part, as least for awhile. In the near term, it’s going to command a price premium (the MSRP *might* be the same, but the street price won’t be.)

    David Reply:

I meant the Canon MSRP retail price not the dealer discounted ones, but you’re right, it will get full retail for some time.

The current 70-200 IS has been going up in price lately. saw it 3 months ago for $1599 now $1950. Too late to jump in now, may as well wait.

The price will be $100 les that the Nikon price. Expect $2795 or $2895.

The price will put the old version in great demand. I might even sell mine, since I also have the F4L version which I use 90% of the time. I doubt if it will be as sharp at F:/2.8 as the F4 is at F4, but if it were close, that would be great.

Fast, quiet, acurate and, super sharp.
    nothing else will do.
Less weight will be a plus.
New coatings and IS should be expected,
it’s hard to say if the optical path
will get a redesign or not… I hope so.

    David Reply:

Doubt the less weight part could happen

    J-Man Reply:

With the new coating, designers can do more radical designs due to less internal reflections.
All it would take is one less element.
    so who knows…

    Anonymous Reply:

Maybe so. The DO version of the 400 did make it smaller and lighter – I just doubt we’re going to see such a radical redesign of it. I’m more interested in improved AF, IS, weather sealing, sharpness and silent.

    Zac Reply:

how could the weather sealing be improved? sealed front element?

What is the CR rating on this? Already bought a 70-200 F/4L IS and a 100-400L in the last 6 months, so I’m definitely not looking for something new. But i’d love to drool and read about it!

What I’m hoping for is for the 70-200 f4 IS price to drop once this comes out so i can pull the trigger. Or maybe a used F4 IS. Good news for the buyers and non buyers. So why doesn’t get a CR rating? explain to me NL credibility.

I ordered mine this past weekend and I couldn’t care less that a new version is coming. It’s not like the current 70-200mm 2.8 is USM is flawed or really need and upgrade.

Don’t fix it if it’s not broken!

    1. You should hyperlink the NL post. Give credit where credit is due after all.
    2. The event in October is not to “show off new stuff”. It’s a Pro event aimed at helping Pros with their workflow, and gear will be on display.

    Reply

    Ed Reply:

So, you don’t think that Canon plans these events as a way to showcase new gear?? Thats a interesting viewpoint.

I think Canon is smarter than that though, the events are planned and thought out well in advance. They may not know exactly what gear will be announced a year in advance, but they certainly know at which events they want to announce new gear.

    Reply

    Adam Reply:

Do you know much about how the Pro market works? They have these kinds of seminars quite often, and NO new gear is announced at them.

    Reply

    Scott Reply:

No new gear is announced at these Pro service seminars, but they do time them so that they can show off recently announced new gear; they’re always in October or April, just after the most recent announcements

    Reply

    David Reply:

Yeah they don’t announce new products at seminars, lol

Unfortunetly the current 70-200 IS f2.8 is already a stellar lens and not a priority to replace in my bag.

I would prefer a new 24-70 f2.8 lens with IS which I think it is a bit more desired overall.

A killer lens would be a 24-105 f2.8 IS to complement the 24-105 f4 IS which is awesome.

Now that the Nikon one has been announced, I bet the Canon one isn’t far away.

Canon really need to do something on their own, instead of just parroting Nikon.

    Reply

    Simon Reply:

More likely Nikon parroting Canon. Nikon’s new 70-200 is merely an immitation of Canon’s EF 70-200 f2.8 IS from 8 years ago.

Bummer. I just got a 70-200 2.8 IS coming from B&H to Surrey. Given Canon’s track record on new kit though I would not be front in line and rather let thier regression testing be done on other unsuspecting customers, been there too many times. I’m excited about the 24-70 II mind..

The Very good news would be a 12-24L F=2.8 and then a 24-70 L IS. The 16-35L II is not so great at 16-18 mm nor near 35mm, but the optimum would be a new 18 or 20 L-serie fixed focus f=2,8
