1D Mark IV in 2010? [CR2]
August 26th, 2009 Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4
From Northlight
One of Northlight’s regular sources is claiming Canon will not announce a new 1D until the new year. That would put the camera on a 3 year product cycle. That would be the same as the 1Ds and 5D. Their source was involved in testing the camera.
Initial reports to us said the same thing some time ago.

I think that you think too much :p. Besides, we would need the latest camera models to capture the most important event in mankind history now don’t we ? :P

Makes sense, The rationale for speeding up the coming out of the mkIV was to make up for some shortcomings (some real and some perceived), with the Nikon D3, to stop some of Canon’s former Nikon shooters from switching back now that Nikon offers an excellent system, instead of an incompetent one like they did two and a half years ago, however, with the economy how it is, the only people dropping large amounts of cash in new gear are the people who are sufficiently financially secure to run a dual system gear collection, or keep flip-flopping back in forth. The mk3’s are OK, so why not do some more R&D, and wait to the end of the normal cycle anyway and then release a killer camera, hopefully in slightly better economic times.

Many Nikon users are moving to Canon for the 5d so I suppose it would just be balancing things back out…

I don’t see pro D3 shooters switching to Canon for a 5D2. Adding one for the video functions and FF 21MP for some things, maybe but trading in a D3 for 5D Mark II, I kinda doubt it.
I switched to Nikon and while I hoping Canon would be back and in time for Vancouver, it doesn’t look like it.

if anyone were going to move, they’d have done it already. why wait until Canon releases brand new product before moving? and which pros are moving because the release date is in 2010? Canon never promised a 2009 delivery date nor do the historical release cycle trends support a 2009 delivery date.
Canon may have lost some sports shooters to Nikon (I did see equal Nikon/Canon gear at some recent baseball outings) but Canon wrapped up the wedding photographer segment pretty well with the 5DMkII. and as the Man of 2009 Vince himself has said, wedding photography is the place to be now if you’re considering photography as a business

I’m a wedding shooter and I’m moving to nikon. I’ve never had a client ask for ANYTHING that requires a 5D(2). Pixel count is a pain in the rear when there are hundreds of images. The AF on the 5D AF can’t track a bride WALKING down the aisle. Customers need in focus photos and the 5D struggles if anything is moving and requires AI Servo mode. The D700 can focus and it doesn’t take a decade to load an image. Easy choice.

How about using single shot then? I’m not a wedding photographer, but I’m sure there’s ways to shoot it as if it weren’t a sporting event.

Or maybe I’m underestimating how fast brides are walking down the isle these days, lol.

Bride don’t walk that fast. The AF is really that bad.

Why use servo if it doesn’t work? Why not just focus and shoot in one button press?

Shallow DOF and movement = no worky either in one shot. Some shots in focus beats all shots OOF.

It’s the shallow DOF that is all the rage in wedding photography these days that makes what you suggest hard. If I could blast away at f/11 (but it goes to 11), life would be good in any focus mode.
The D700 can shoot shallow DOF with consistent results. The 5D can’t. The 1DsmkIII can also do it, but I can buy two D700 and have money left over for the price of a 1Ds.

So we’d only be waiting for a pro-class APS-H 1D-lite (7D) plus the beefed-up APS-C 50D successor (60D). Good enough for now. CR should keep a scorecard of which rumormonger got the most accurate & earliest rumor out.

I like the reports of a decent AF system in a non 1 series camera. Hate the crop sensor side of this. Really like the end of megapixel madness. Canon has a huge hole in the product line not offering a FF with a working AF for under $6500.

I think that is a rather good news : maybe Canon management finally listened ?
It reminds me of this news, I wonder if it was genuine :

I really hope Canon brings out a FF soon that doesn’t have 21Mp(12-15Mp is lots),and has pro AF and weather sealing.
If Canon misses this opportunity, you can bet Sony and Nikon will pounce on it.
