1D Mark IV Spotted

August 16th, 2009 Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

From a POTN Thread
“At an NFL preseason game on Friday night in NJ, some newspaper photogs were talking about a prototype PRO camera that they saw earlier in the week.” The person followed up stating that they heard it “first hand, and that the photographers work for one of the major outlets and said they saw the camera in their offices – they are using a lot of 5D’s now because of the video features and are looking forward to using a pro camera with video.”

I wouldn’t call POTN a good source, I can make up things more credible than POTN rumors any day!

Just because it’s on POTN doesn’t mean the guy didn’t hear something.

What’s the difference between someone posting something they heard on POTN and someone emailing Canon Rumors Guy saying they heard it. CR1 in the title?!

A person posting on POTN is putting their (online) reputation on the line (well sort of) as they aren’t (as) “Anonymous”.

Any douche can email anonymously to CR just get see their wishlist posted.

    Reply

    DeeWee Reply:

Yeah, reputation on the line indeed. LOL get real dude!
Let’s see what we have here:
    1) Everyone knows Canon is going to release a Pro camera some day in the future
    2) POTN non-anonymous guy posts something about someone who heard that someone else is testing an unnamed Canon Pro camera model

How exactly is someone putting his reputation on the line here? Cause it seems to me there is zero substance to that post, the guy didn’t even bother to throw in the usual camera “spec” bullcr*p…

    Reply

    Not too Anonymous Reply:

IMHO if there were a list of camera specs, that would make me think it’s more likely to be BS.

I was comparing emailing CR to posting on an online forum (where you can’t just change your name to suit your whim).

When you go on an online forum a lot and start posting rubbish, you do get a tarnished reputation. So it is on the line (sort of).

Note the “sort of” (which I used in my first post too).

Much more on the line than emailing totally anonymously to CR with your “I’m sure it’s true” comprehensive list of Camera specs.

Well, we are close to the most important event in the world: the football world cup. (Football is what americans mistakenly call “soccer”…). It is the biggest showcase for cameras. If I worked for Canon marketing, for sure I would want the pro shooter to have some time to get used to the cameras before the big event.

So, I guess it makes sense.

    Reply

    Anonymous Reply:

that is a good point…and Canon is a big sponsor for the World Cup. No point in putting it out next fall or even next spring…not enough time for people to experiment with it and find out it’s good qualities. whether this rumor is credible…I’m iffy, but a part of me wouldn’t be surprised

The most important SPORTING event, possibly. The most important event without qualification? No.

As for testing prototype cameras, if the 1DIV is close enough to release they won’t be prototypes by then. And the big agencies will have had them for testing long enough to have some feel for how they can be trusted.

If so, then why are Canon so paranoid about protecting 1-series features? You could market, more strongly, an intermediate tier having a few top end features.

    Reply

    Paul Reply:

Top end tends to be a lot more profitable too- there’s a lot of competition in the consumer end of the market.

    Reply

    David Reply:

If all they sold was 1 series cameras Canon would go out of business in a day. They could drop the 1 series entirely and not see more than a small dent in their $44,990,780 net sales. However, from a perception standpoint, they get a ton mileage from consumers seeing pros using pro Canon cameras on TV, that and Andre playing tennis.

This sports event could work perfectly as a final “real life testing” before a release in September. Canon should make sure that there won´t be any “AF issues” again. It´s better to have a new model tested on an event like this BEFORE an official release than to have it “beta-tested” by professionals AFTER release.

They’re at the Angels baseball games, the playground for Canon in Irvine, but you can’t spot them because they put black gaffers over the markings. Next, we are talking about companies who understand the media they are working in and want to stay competitive. They aren’t going to send a guy to shoot sports with out the necessary gear. If they are shooting sports video, they will use purpose built equipment. We are talking about pros here, not artists on a budget. I can see the sending out 5D2 with the non-action guys, but not for sports.

Meh. Better AF and more AF Points. More AF points is secondary. The Quality of the AF needs to improve…right now its average. I am hoping its a lot better this time around.

Haha, well its not like I can afford a 1D right now. But maybe they’ll pass that technology into lower-end cams.

Northlight Images is reporting that we’re not getting another Prosumer camera. If we get anything, it’s a pro model.

Northlight isn’t “reporting” anything – just regurgitating rumours, just like every other rumour site.

Hopefully not. Who cares about a new ixus or something. Generally speaking Ixus buyers aren’t hanging out for the next release to get that must have new feature. They just buy whichever P&S the sales man pitches best to them.

I have no idea how they could possibly keep things this tight given how close we are to the announcement. Bunch of P&S updates FTL.

I’m still hoping for a 1D update soon.

I’d have to agree. There is too little information coming. I’d be very surprised if it’s 1DIV and L lenses (or even EF-S lenses).

My guess: New IXUS or maybe the G11 if we’re lucky (not interested in the G11 unless it has interchangeable lenses and can use current lenses with an adapter (that would be very awesome indeed, though very, very unlikely).

I don’t expect anything either. Give them an 18 month cycle concerning xxD’s. Or even a 24 month. I’m not in a hurry for nothing with my 30D. As an amateur photographer I just would like to see two main improvements on whatever will come out: better High ISO and higher DR. And you are right, we repeatedly read that these past month. But that’s the only specs I go for.

“In a comment from one of our more frequent sources (thanks), we’re told that the prospect of another ‘line’ of SLRs (i.e. the 7D) is considered unlikely and that the current makeup of Canon’s range is considered to be a relatively good match to consumer/pro demand.”

Certainly need to bring out a 60D . The New Pentax K 7 knocks the spots off both 50D and 500D. Would be nice if whatever it is arrives before Xmas, else I’m going with the Pentax.
