They’re just going to replace kit lense with a new one (2.8 version?) Looks reasonable.

A 24-105 f/2.8 IS would increase the weight and size of the lens significantly, not to mention the price. If anything, this might be signifying a II version of the lens (with f/4) or simply that they aren’t going to offer a kit anymore for the 5DmII. Either way, the 24-105 lens as it stands now is a good walkaround lens and I feel the extra weight that f/2.8 would add kind of ruins that.

I would love a 2.8 version, but I’m thrilled with the 4 if it never happens. The 24-105 rarely leaves my 5DII these days, except if I swap in a prime or 70-200. Best walkaround lens I own.

They wouldn’t replace the 4.0, they’d add the 2.8 version for more money, and I doubt the 2.8 would be in a kit as it’d drive the price up too high.

Not likely a typo, it’s been up there a few days. The fact that the kit is discontinued and the camera likely means that a new kit based on a different lens but the same camera is coming… and soon.

Don’t think the 24-105 will be replaced. Why will they do that? Maybe it will disappear because of a 24-70 2.8 IS, which leaves no market for a 24-105 4 IS.

Oh yeah… and a 70-200m 2.8 leaves no market for the 70-200 4.

70-200 differentation is because of the 500 euro difference in price (and the weight).
24-70 and 24-105 is only a few euro’s (here in the Netherlands).
Think before writing such things, Malte.

Yeh, but you know how much the new lenses will cost?
btw: Here in Europe it´s a difference of about 150€
new 24-100 4 maybe something like 1200€ and the 24-105 2.8 like 1500/1600€

24-100/105 2.8 will not happen, a 24-70 is already 950 gram or something like that, you will need a crane to mount a 24-100 2.8.
There has never been a good rumour about such a lens either.

David Reply:

It wouldn’t be bigger than a 70-200, no crame needed, lol. Also, a 24-70 2.8 IS would not make the 24-105 4.0 disappear, the 2.8 IS would just be more money.

Matte has a point here actually – 24-70 and 24-105 have a bit of a difference in their focal length, don’t they? Also, a fairly old 24-70 without IS is already priced above (not much, but still) 24-105 WITH IS. Adding IS to 24-70 will place it into even higher price category, don’t you think? Also, for a walkaround lens many people will miss the extra 35mm on the long end. And if you think about the photogs who use this lense for studio portrait work, well… lets say that with a certain type of face of your subject 70mm will be your starting point for shooting. 70-105 might get a lot of use there actually (on FF). So, these two are quite different, so yes – there will still be market for a 24-105 IS 4.0. Now, if Canon brings in a 24-105 IS 2.8 – thats ANOTHER story and THAT will make 24-70 somewhat useless (unless again there will be a fair price difference).

Henk Van Oosterom Reply:

I don’t think Canon will have a 24-70 non-Is and IS next to each other, so there is no need to differentiate the price. 1000 euro is a nice price for a 24-70 2.8 IS in this economy.
The millimeters argument makes sense, but I dont’t believe in a 24-105 2.8.

ZT Reply:

24-70 is quite good optically as it is. Adding IS will most likely place it into the same price category as current 70-200 2.8 IS. But in general I think that if we consider 24-70 2.8 IS and 24-105 2.8 IS then having 24-70 2.8 IS in Canon’s lineup will be kind of pointless. I believe Canon will add IS to 24-70 and will not introduce 24-105 with 2.8 anytime soon. However, I’d love to see Canon duplicating the situation with 24-105 as it now has with 70-200. I’d like to see both 4.0 and 2.8 for 24-105. Now, a 24-105 with 2.8 and IS would be a dream walkaround lense indeed (if not too heavy).

The 100 Macro has been back-ordered for well over a month now (I’ve been looking to buy since late June), so I’m pretty sure there’s an IS version in the pipeline. I hope so anyway; otherwise I missed out on a whole summer Macro shooting;) I’m not sure if they’ll keep the non-Macro, as you’d think it wouldn’t have been out of stock everywhere for so long.

the 24-105 is not that sharp. There is a huge concession made in sharpness for the cost and weight. Enjoy it, it is easier then caring around 24-70mm 2.8 which also IMO is not impressive in the sharpness category. I would applaud an update of this lens that would compete with the new nikon 24-70mm 2.8.

Considering people still report shortages with 5DmkII body, Canon probably figured out that they are giving away a very good lense with a huge discount. Folks simply buy the kit and sell the lense. A lot of people who are in FF market have already purchased 24-105 a while ago. Nice lens. A true walkaround. I usually just throw a small prime (like a 28/1.8 or 85/1.8) in addition to 24-105 into my bag just in case I’ll need to make some shots in low light.

I think less megapixels and a worse iso performance wouldn´t make that FF-camera MUCH worse to justify the lower price. And the range between the 50/60D and the 5D2 isn´t that big.

Maybe a beefed up APS-C at $2000 with some higher end EF-S glass introduced with it ;)
Sony is coming out with the A750 14 MP @ $1200.00, A850 with 24.6 Mp @ $1999.95
What if Canon stuck the old 5D sensor in a 50D body, or a modified version of it? They could keep APS-C for the four Rebel models – not much difference between the T1i/500D and 50D at this point anyway, so APS-C would cover the $600 to $1000 price points and go FF the rest of the way up to compete with Sony and Nikon?

Malte Reply:

The A850 will f*ck canon in this segment if it is true.
When i read the A850 thing it makes a lot of more sense to me that Canon could bring a “7D”.
Have never heared about that thing from Sony.
I would love to see somethin like 6-8fps 10-15megapixel at FF, faster AF and a 100%-VF in a 5D-Body.

The A850 manual was leaked on Sony’s website, and info on the A750 and A950 have now been leaked as well, all FF it looks like.
What better way for Sony to make a market share grab than to offer a FF 14 MP body for the price of a 50D?

Talking about that, someone who understands lens design answer this.
A 24-105 2.8L IS would be similar is size/weight to a 70-200 2.8L IS?! Or actually weigh less and/or be smaller?
