Anonymous: there was an announcement on the 25:th. They introduced 27 products, but no EOS cameras or lenses. Sept 1 will be an EOS day for sure.

And the press meeting is official, so the only speculation this far is whether it’s 7D, 60D or something else.

60D would make me happy, since the 50D would likely drop a few hundred bucks. I’m not sure the 60 will be exceptional enough to warrant buying it at release.

  8. WT Says:

My prediction (unfortunately). The 7D is a ho-hum release. Maybe replacing the 60D with some advanced features (like HD movie) but still on an APS-C platform. $1500-2000, but nothing earth-shaking, unless it is FF (which I doubt).

I believe the 1D rev will happen, later in the year, but will be expensive.

Just a gut-feel from 20+ years being involved in technology launches. There’s just nothing in the buzz to indicate Canon is deviating from their last 24 months of ho-hum releases (excepting maybe the 5d mkii, but even that was evolutionary, not revolutionary).

i.e. don’t expect incredible new gains in AF or cheap FF. I think it’s APS-C with HD movie and maybe a few more bells and whistles. I’m not holding my breath.

    Anonymous Reply:

what do you expect if you consider everything “evolutionary” ..

    WT Reply:

    APS-C compact (which didn’t happen)

    Affordable FF (sub $2K list)

    Better AF across the lines.

Those three would qualify as game-changers.

if you can’t afford a 2700 FF .. a 1999 FF isn’t going to do much for you as far as “game changing”.

especially considering it would be a stripped down 5DII..ie: 90% viewfinder, smaller chassis (similar to Elan series), lower FPS, and same or worse AF .. think FF rebel and you’re close if you want a sub 2K FF.

    Blake Reply:

It’s about time those 9 AF points became cross-type. If they announce that, most people won’t care, not knowing how huge that would be over what we’re currently using. It’d be nice if they’d carry that over into the 5dmk3 PLUS at least an additional 4 cross-type AF points to make more of a square pattern than diagonal to spread them out for easier rule-of-thirds focusing.

Whatever we see next week will show up in the 5dmk3 in a year, which is what I’m looking forward to.

I empathize with your indifference. Canon has delivered a whole bunch of lack luster products in the past few years.

But I think the S90 may be Canon’s most exciting compact camera release yet. Hopefully, this may herald a change in Canon’s evolutionary pace for the past few years.

Remember, Nikon was also caught in a rut before the release of their winning D300/D3 combo. And they have nothing much to show this year… so far.

Go to a store and shoot the mk2 in low light at ISO6400, then zoom in at 100% on the LCD. Looking through that viewfinder and at the 100% crop on that crisp screen, and you’ll walk home with a maxed credit card and full framer… And, you won’t regret it :)

    Reply

    Anonymous Reply:

That’s only if you can get the AF to work in a condition where you need that high iso…

    Reply

    Nick Reply:

I have no problems with the AF on the 5d2 and I shoot in low light all the time. Heck it focuses as well as my friend’s 1d2 if not better.

    Reply

    Blake Reply:

    ZING!

I suppose the high ISO is still good for stopping motion. Instead of ISO1600, f/2.8, 1/20, you could get just as clean or cleaner ISO6400, f/2.8, 1/80. That right there is huge. So, yeah, maybe you don’t get nighttime viewfinder-focusing shooting with the mk2, but well… that’s a pretty fringe case unless you’re a spy.

However, if you *are* in low light, that ISO6400 really gives you an amazing Live View. You can manually focus in those situations, unless the scene is real dynamic.

Hmm, well I think apple never released a product what changed our life’s.

They just presented and sold it in a way that people realised they need that.
Most of their “new” products are based stuff which existed before, made by companies who could not sell like apple can.
Touch screen? Ipod? I saw touch screen computers 15 years before, it even existed in the 60’s.. Ipod? I owned portable mp3 player before… and the list goes on.

I guess they will introduce a touch screen netbook in the future.
Although it exists for a long time, and windows 7 also supports full touch screen mode, they will sell it 100x more than the others, and everyone will think they invented it.

I would love to see a 24-70 IS, as long as they could keep the weight down. It’s already a huge lens. It would be nice to see a zoom or two in the f2.0 or 1.8 range. Not that the technology is there yet….70-200 2.0L IS would be a dream. Make the IS 5 stops and keep the IQ or improve it.

OK, everybody can go back to sleep until the 1 September.

Because of the Best Buy leak, we have a pretty good idea about the price of the 7D. I suspect that the price is a BB guess based on a rough estimate from Canon USA. However, I still think that the body price will be between $2400 and $2700 (the 5DMkII price), not between $1500-2000. Therefore, I still see it probably being a 12MP, 8FPS FF Lord of Darkness camera, to compete with the D700.

    See y’all on the first

I don’t get it. If everyone is waiting for a cheap ff camera, why don’t you get an original 5d? I got a used to as a back up for about 1k sent it to canon for to be reconditioned for about 100 dollars and it’s practly a new camera. Cheaper then 7d 60d 50d etc.

you are right, this is actually a very good point. i was allready spotting for good second hand mint condition 5d’s. but then it’s from 2005. that’s older than 4 years man.

    Reply

    Bob Howland Reply:

I have an original 5D that I ordered two days before the 5D was announced, based on a detailed spec sheet leaked by Canon Spain. It still takes great pictures, even at ISO 3200, and it’s been extremely reliable but it’s a 4 year old camera. Therefore, (1) its focusing speed and accuracy for moving targets need to be improved, especially in low light (2) the frame rate has to be raised to at least 6FPS and (3) the high ISO noise and dynamic range has to be made better than the 2-year-old D700.

    Reply

    Bob Howland Reply:

And, oh yes, (4) the viewfinder alphanumeric display has to be brightened so that it doesn’t disappear outdoors in bright sunlight.

  19. Ed Says:

It will likely be FF, and tens of thousands of would be FF enthusiasts will flock to it. They will then find that they need longer focal lengths, just to regain the capability they had. Instead of the 55-250mm zoom, they will need a 100-400mm and so on. At minimum, they will want a 17-40mm, a 24-105mm, and a 100-400mm. Those who already own these lenses or similar combinations should be delighted with their foresight, except, if they use 400mm on their crop, now they will need 600mm or even 800mm, and a 1.4X extender will not autofocus with their 100-400mm zoom either.

Good Plan Canon, put a low cost FF camera on the street and rake in the profit on lenses. Everyone will be happy while you laugh all the way to the bank.

Kinda sounds like the way it works with printers and Ink!

    Reply

    Bob Howland Reply:

The simple solution is to own both a 7D and a 60D. My 5D is my indoor camera and my 40D is my outdoor camera.

It’s a crop factor, no focal length extension. So you don’t get more zoom on an aps-c, you just get a smaller field of view than on a ff. If you ned new lenses, it’s because you may have bought ef-s optics.

    Rocky Reply:

Actually, you do not need new lens lens when you switch from APS-C to FF, as long as your lens is not EF-S. Remember, you will have more pixel in the FF than the APS-C. so you can always use the center of the image only. This will be just like shooting with the APS-C. Of cause people will argue that this is not FF anymore. That is correct. But even for an excellent 10X8 print, all you need is 6 mp. so you still have plenty of pixels left. Professionals have been using this trick for ages. The above argument is based on the assumption that really good lens ( Canon L lens)is used with your new FF body.
