CR’s Take *UPDATE*
CCD? and no HD Video?
Dropped rating on this one to [CR2]. The source is solid, I just have a lot of issue with the spec list. The sloppy whiteout on the LCD too.
In favor of being true *UPDATE*
I do notice the grip on the front doesn’t match any current G camera. The G7 & G9 didn’t have a large grip and the G10’s grip doesn’t curve down. That would be very fine attention to detail for a hoax.

10MP ? Wow ! Wow !
G7 was 10MP, G9 was 12MP, G10 was ~15MP. Now back to 10MP ?
That’s great! Really. Now, there is really hope for a nice product on xxD product line. Go Canon!

What I want is a camera that takes great pictures. I could care less about movie mode. It would be nice to have a larger sensor but reducing MP to 10 and increasing low light sensitivity is a good thing. Manufactures of still cameras should concentrate on their still image quality and get rid of movie mode if it at all reduces still picture quality. They should also bring back aperture and shutter speed dials like film cameras. I am glad I waited and can not wait for the G11. yea it would have been nice to have specs like the Sigma DP2 but that camera is about $700.

Interesting! Same size sensor but with 30% fewer pixels. This reduction may go down as a first for a Canon product.

i really hope that, if they reduce mpx on the g11, they will do that on the 60D
Reply
August 18th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
The 15MP of the 50D did bring a lot of reach though. I doubt they will go back. Either leave it there or maybe top it out at 18MP.

I think it still 15mpx and just increase the sensor. Hope so.

this sounds strange in many aspects. Where is the difference to G10 (i mean the real difference)
-> mini-HDMI and then only VGA video? why bother?
-> 77% viewfinder coverage: give me a break – but might be true
i give this a 10% chance of being true.

I don´t get it. Why no HD-Video?

So the only news are the tilting screen and lower image resolution? Hmmm … these are for sure two improvments (I suppose image quality will be maybe 50% better) but it’s too little for our espectations. I was hoping for brighter lens and a HD video mode also … and maybe some faster countinous drive mode. I guess they will make a new GX1 camera with CMOS after all … like SX10/SX1 … they may be going with two cameras G11 and GX1. We shall see.

What? If this is really the spec for G11, I’m gonna skip this one. I sold my G10 recently with the hope of upgrading to G11. I’m not impressed at all.

This is quite a surprise if true. I mean that bit about 10 MP.
So, they’re finally admitting that increasing pixel count without a corresponding increasing in sensor size is a mistake? Wow.
That takes lots of courage. And for once, they’re listening to consumers.
I am somewhat skeptical though.
It’s too little and too late. These specs are inferior to the LX3 in every aspect: movie mode, lens speed etc etc.

Movie mode great if that’s what your looking for in a still camera. Inferior to Lx3?? Well I’ve squared off G9 and G10 throughly to Lx3 at low iso(real world) and the lx3 is clearly inferior. This is not even mentioning the fact that the Lx3 is plagued with distortion issues and even though it’s got that nice Sumi fast lens the G10 still shots better indoors!!??? Go figure that one out. If the G11 is an even finer camera let’s not even bother making a comparison.

Unless its iso800 performance is equal to the G10s iso 200, and it has a better DR, no interest on buying it…same lens? At least at base iso the G10 has outstanding resolution ofr large prints…

I hope they find a way to make it a 3in LCD. I’m glad I waited to before taking the dive with G10 because the swivel screen would be so convenient for someone like me.
I loved the feel and ergonomics of the G10! It was such an easy camera to operate without ever having to open the manual first. I personally didn’t care that it was heavy because it felt good in my hands and well made.
I never got the G10 because I thought it was too early then other things came up. Not to mention that I could get another D-SLR body used for a little more. The G11 might make me part with my money though.

It would be shocking if Canon decreased the MP – I don’t think they’ve ever done that. Especially so drastically here.
Wouldn’t that basically be an admission they sacrificed IQ for MP in the last two iterations of the G? I can’t see Canon doing that.
Keeping the MP at 14.7 with a larger CCD sensor seems more plausible. Dropping it to 10 doesn’t seem like the Canon way. Plus, they’re no longer using the Sony sensors anymore, so a change in CCD sensor size sounds more likley than leaving it at 1/1.7″.

I was hoping they would put a 50D CMOS sensor at 10 megapixels. The low light capability would be outstanding! I’m pretty sure it will have HD video. Look at the success of the 5D Mark II.
Remember folks MORE megapixels in a SMALL sensor does NOT mean better.

I thought they were coming out with just a regular T1…..? If so, I hope they make the shutter sound ” NOT ” sound so cheap like it does in the XSi , XS, XTi, and the T1i. In those cameras the shutter sound so cheap … I hope the shutter in the rumored T1 sound like the shutter in the 50D and 40D’s !

10mp would actually be welcome. The larger sensels will produce a lot less noise. It’s probably not true, because customers want more megapixels more than anything, but this would produce a much cleaner image.

*Effective: 10.4MP, Recorded: 10.0MP
That would be great, with current way too high pixel density diffraction starts at f8 or so, lowering pixel count would be a good thing.
*6.1-30.5mm f/2.8-4.5 (35mm film equivalent: 28-140mm)
Not too bad but I’d prefer constant 2.8 aperture,or at least a slightly wider wide angle.
*Video: 640 x 480 @ 30fps, 320 x 240 @ 30fps
Sounds like a joke, come on? Not a deal breaker for me but honestly why would they bother, really needs HD.
*Viewfinder Coverage: 77%
Oh my god…
*2.8″ LCD Vari-Angle
Good.
All in all, still not tempted at all to upgrade from my almost six-year old Nikon Coolpix 5400 (and it uses CF for storage too!).

CMOS and HD video are twins, from Canon’s introduction to PowerShot SX1, it is because of the quick speed of CMOS that allows HD video shooting to become possible, as well as a stunning 4FPS……
I still remember that Canon executives said they are considering adding variety to G line to meet different needs(check dpreview’s intervuiew during last photokina)
Lower pixel counts for better ISO..
Swivel screen to restore G series tradition…
They are the two fundamental requests you would hear….
maybe, this time, they simply answered these requests?
But it is still rather unlikely that Canon will sell G11 which is ,speaking of specification, inferior to that of G10.

I hope they stay away from CMOS in point & shoots until they know what they’re doing. The technology itself (CMOS) is fantastic when you have a larger sensor sizes (DSLR + Micro 4/3 size) but not as dazzling when its smaller. Most of the recent small CMOS sensors haven’t faired too well in reviews or in use. (Sony’s Fx1, Canon’s Sx1)
CCD technology (at smaller sizes) can be fantastic. (lx3, Fuji 200EXR to name a few)

I really wish that this is true…
1. Finally the return of the tilt/swivel display to the G series – a feature I missed since the G7 and never understood why Canon took this step in the first place
2. Finally a step down from megapixel madness. Less pixels on the same sensor size as the G10 should bring about better usable Hi-ISO performance.
Golden times are a-coming. ;)

As Sebastian says, LESS megapixels give BETTER image quality. Why does anyone need more than 10MP? The glass on a camera of this type does not warrant huge enlargements. What people want is better image quality in lower light situations, for an average print size (e.g. 4X6 or 8X10).
High MP counts are just to sell to novice buyers. Canon reduced the MP in order to respond to the buyers for this camera who understand the difference between MP and image quality (e.g. noise).

Looks good to me. If you read any reviews of the G10, you’d know that the biggest problem with that camera was the noise, hands down.
Canon is making a smart move keeping this line aimed squarely at the keen amateur/pro back up market.
