wow. it’s amazing to me how so many people are looking for a camera that does EVERYTHING. just like people who look for a phone that does EVERYTHING. like some people on here said, if you don’t like it, go buy something else. and for the people who say that is exactly what’s happening who cares? there are other people out there who love the G series that i’m sure Canon isn’t too worried about those of you who aren’t happy with it. as far as i’m concerned, if you wanted a camera with HD video, something else is going to get compromised in its place. i think canon is doing a fine job keeping things simple. maybe it’s time that you people moved to another brand of camera…as far as i’m concerned, a camera is for taking pictures. if you want to shoot videos, get a camcorder.

I really don’t see what the hang up about HD video is. I’ve yet to see video on any still camera that comes even close to competeing to a camcorder.

Why do you assume having HD means bad IQ? HD on the G11 would not lessen the IQ at all. Your sarchasm makes no sense.

I don’t care about IQ, I just want HD.

What? Good HD TV’s cost $5000? I’ll pass, I don’t want quality, Why would I buy a Quality HDTV when I can get a really crappy LCD that looks like pasty garbage for 1/4 the price! I mean it is HD after all, and that IS* all that matters! I can’t tell my friends I have a quality TV, but I can tell them I have HD! LCD FTW!

the ISO range is 80-3200

The Night mode cuts the res in 1/2 to quadruple the light per resulting impage pixel.

80×4 = 320
3200×4 = 12800

In other words, Night mode at ISO 320 will have the same IQ (less the resolution) as ISO 80.

12800 will be the same IQ as 3200. (less the resolution)

No, ISO 80 on G11 looks 2 stops better then ISO 80 on G10.

S90 does better in low-light at the wide angle but worse at the tele end.

I agree that the lack of HD video was a bummer, What is also a bummer is the inability to zoom while recording video.

On the flip side; the lower resolution video is capable of gathering much more light per video pixel then an HD alternative could have with a given sensor size.

In the end, you will get very high quality Video in low-light conditions, v.s. smudgy flat (HD) video in the same lighting conditions.

I wish I could post a comparison of HD Video to SD video and how TERRIBLE the HD looks indoors by comparison.

I stayed away from the G10 due to the stupid high resoultion / noise. I just picked up a G11 last night to complement my 40D.

Noise is still a tad high, but hey, it’s a point and shoot. a world better then the G10 though.

And for those hoping for 5MP, the G11 actually sports a feature where it will drop to 2.5MP (no honestly) to quadruple the ISO performance.

(E.g. ISO 3200 in this mode, would perfrom like ISO 200 on the older G10) it’s THAT much better…

The highest resolution of DVD is 0.3MP
resolution of HD is between 0.9MP and 2.1MP.

10MP is 5X higher then 1080p HD! If you think you need more from the point in shoot (in trade for IQ) then you should be using your cel-phone to take your pictures.

Why are you all complaining, five years earlier you wouldn’t have complained, because video probably wasn’t even on the camera. You should be happy they have video in the first place. It’s a camera, not a video camera. You can’t always get what you want. It looks like a great CAMERA and that’s all that matters. I mean it’s not like you expect great camera’s on videocamera’s. Why not buy a good video cam that has high mp pictures. I need a camera so I am a first time p&s camera and this is it. It’s got great low-light, raw, and manual. I’m happy. Shut UP!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately for Canon, going across the street and buying a different camera is exactly what many are going to do.

We are upset because the G series have been fantastic cameras. The absence of HD video is a disappointment for those of us, many who are road warriors and know the meaning of packing light. HD video would have been the natural upgrade and was expected and waited for by many.

The Canon G series underwater cases are inexpensive and a great way to get a quality rig for a reasonable price. It’s become the most popular UW medium priced outfit for many reasons: resolution, raw, manual control and video. Having a underwater rig that shoots full HD at 30fps with manual control would have made it a must have upgrade. Most other P&S’s have HD now, so why not Canon especially when my G9 has it, mind you at 15fps.

We want Canon to move ahead of the competition because they are a great company with excellent reliability and service. They made a mistake here not including HD video and if we don’t tell them in one way or another, who is going to…just better sales from across the street? I’ll keep my G9 until something better comes my way. Hopefully, it’ll be a Canon like I’ve been using all these years.
