1D Mark 4 [CR1]

September 30th, 2009 | 33 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4, Canon Lenses

When?
There is still no solid information in regards to when we can expect an announcement. I get random emails saying October or February. It’s all guesses at the moment.

What?
A regular source of information says the new 1D will introduce the DIGIC V processor. This processor will not only be faster, but it will also be geared to video recording. The faster processors will allow for RAW video to be shot.

The source had no spec information outside of that.

Lenses
Nothing of note coming in about lenses. Other than wishful thinking.

EOS 7D Mini Review

September 29th, 2009 | 132 Comments | Posted in Canon 7D, Canon Reviews

Our first
So here is our first review of a camera.

The review is simple and to the point. There is nothing scientific about what I’ve done. I’m basically giving you my opinion of the camera and what I noticed after a couple of days shooting with it. There are lots of places around the web that will give you insane amounts of samples and tests.

I’m trying to convey what you’ll experience when you walk into a retail store and try the camera out for 10 minutes and what to pay attention to.

I will update the review over time and I’ll look to improve the flow of it.

There is now a new button on the menu for mini reviews. The 7D is now there.

Do check the part about the 8fps, I’m sure this “issue” is going to come up a lot. Thanks to Dan Carr for his insight on the matter.

7D’s in the USA
I have confirmation that Adorama is now shipping 7D’s.

The Death of PMA? Canon will not be attending in 2010.
PMA is all but dead in Canada, the writing is on the wall for the US as well. Canon USA has confirmed they won’t be attending the trade show. All we’re going to have left is Photokina in Germany.

From PDN Gear Guide
Canon USA has confirmed to PDN Gear Guide that the company will not be attending the PMA 2010 trade show in Anaheim, CA in February.

“Yes, Canon U.S.A. has decided not to participate in the PMA 2010 Trade Show,” Melissa Dara Moritz, Canon USA’s Public Relations manager, told PDN Gear Guide in an email message.

Moritz did not elaborate in her message but we expect to get more details from Eliott Peck, Canon USA’s Sales Director & Assistant General Manager, in an interview later today.

The word from Canon confirms a web report from Amateur Photographer magazine which was among the first to report that the imaging giant will not be attending the the PMA 2010.

An official from PMA also confirmed the news to PDN Gear Guide.

“Yes, Canon has chosen not to exhibit at PMA 2010 in Anaheim,” said PMA spokesperson Tom Crawford. “We continue to have a good relationship with Canon, as a valued PMA member, and look forward to their participation in our many events around the world.”

Amateur Photographer’s report quotes an unnamed “spokeswoman” for Canon USA who confirms that the company has “made the decision not to attend the PMA trade show in 2010.”

Jessops Saved…. For Now
Struggling camera retailer Jessops is undertaking a restructuring that it says will save the company.

It said that it would reorganise so that its biggest creditor, HSBC, owned 47% of the company, with the rest owned by pension and employee trusts.

HSBC will, in return, forgive £34m of debt that Jessops owes it.

Jessops said the restructuring would protect the about 2,000 employees of the company, and will allow it to compensate its current shareholders.

A New 1Ds Mark III Review!

September 29th, 2009 | 3 Comments | Posted in Canon Reviews

1Ds Mark III is still a good camera!
A newish web site Photocrati has just published a new review of the 1Ds Mark III. The review was done by Jack Neubart (author of Photographer’s Exposure Handbook and contributing editor at Shutterbug).

Summary
There are cameras out there that are faster and smarter, but sometimes what you need is a workhorse camera. And this 1Ds Mark III, my friends, is a workhorse designed to stay the course.

Don’t forget the Canon announcement on the 29th. It doesn’t look to be EOS related, but Canon seems to think it’s important nonetheless.

Blurrycam!
I’ve only received sightings from one person in Toronto. Anyone else seen the 7D out and about?

News & Notes

7D Next Week around the globe
According to Rob Galbraith, sources and countless emails. The 7D should be shipping to dealers next week in the US and Canada.

7D Features & EOS
Just an interesting note. The Dutch EOSZine (Canon’s own monthly journal, www.eoszine.nl) states in its 7D preview (page 12/13) that if the 7D is too expensive “you’ll find that all mentioned innovations will be applied in all EOS models in a year time” (rough translation).

Samyang 35 f/1.2 for EF
We should be seeing a new fast prime from Samyang early next year. Canon will receive a 35 f/1.2 while other manufacturers receive an f/1.4. Apparently one of the advantages of the EF mount (larger bayonet).

State of the Video Union – Canon

September 21st, 2009 | 89 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 7D, Canon Firmware

Some food for thought
The following information is from one of my regular contributors. Read, enjoy and discuss.

5D2, 7D and 1D4
Digic IV was not designed as a video processing chip, hence it cannot downscale multi Megapixel images in real-time at a frame rate needed for video. The fastest camera ever released by the company is the 7D and it can only down sample by pixel binning close to ten 18MP images to any smaller size a second. Current implementation skips vertical and horizontal lines then averages pixel values.

Digic V has a new on die area for video processing which lets it do up to 60 1080p frames a second with help from a pre-encoding ASIC chip that does pixel binning really fast. This will generate an image with almost no visible artifacts or moire. It will still be a step below RAW video but quality will be usable on production environments and on heavily detailed scenes.

I have not heard anything about a RAW module for SLR cameras. It seems far fetched since the CF module on these cameras just can’t feed that kind of data for video even in sRAW. The only raw module I have seen specs on will be an option package on the upcoming line of video specific products in 2010.

The 5D MII 24p firmware seems to be on hold, it has been tested since the camera was a prototype and there is simply no reason why the 5D can’t do 1080 24p or 720p 30.  The upcoming 1D Mark IV will have even better video than the 7D from the specs Ive heard about and this camera will not be released this year as speculated. So Canon doesn’t
really need to release a new update for the 5D.   One interesting
thing that might cement this decision is that the rolling shutter on the 5D MII is much nastier in 24p and they probably thought it was just not good enough to release it.  If the patch is released expect heavy rolling shutter.

1D Mark IV what to look for based on part lists from suppliers and engineers:

-Completely new AF module akin to that on the 7D but with several times as many AF points. The tracking performance on this will be the best in the industry for many years. Video focus assist will be improved in speed five fold.

-Video: 1080p 24,30,25  720p 50, 60, SD with improved picture and audio control limits. Improved video processing.  If it has Digic V it will be a true binning downscale and a big jump in quality.

-No swivel screen, improved contrast and color gamut.

-12 fps at full 14bit. – this is not confirmed just rumored by staff outside of the project!

The 1D line is guarded air tight and even many engineers working on modules for the camera have not even seen the full spec list.
