The real final discussion here is weight and size. The weight & size of the 1D will be obsolete once a new 1Ds is introduced or a smaller version of a 1D with equivalent specks. I doubt that Canon will release a 1Ds that does not have similar or much better specks then the 1D.
This being said you will be stuck with a heavy large cameo that is second rate to the 1Ds or other cameras and at a price that is very high. The correct pricing in todays market should come in at about USD 3.000 not 5,000 to make this camera sensible, and a good long term investment.

A 7D size version of the 1D is the only logical and practical concept that will not become a heavy overpriced paper weight in the next 3 years.

People who ACTUALLY DO know what's going to be annouced on 29th Sep must be grinning when they read these comments !! They do keep it quiet well, considering how easy information can travel quickly...

If the release is going to be a camera one and not a business machine, just wondering whether there was an invitation like this when the 7D was about to be announced. If not, does it mean can we expect it to be a bigger announcement than the 7D?

12mm is very wide. I'd have to see how much distortion there is before I'd say how usable it is. The Canon 14mm is rectilinear, and is quite usable. But even so, if I'm going to buy a 12mm I don't want it turned into a 16mm. My 16mm I dont want turned into a 21mm. My 24mm I don't want turned into a 31mm.

BTW, the 16-35mm L was introduced in September 2001, its already on the mark II.

Doing 1 to 3 shoots a week right now, not bad given the economy.

SIGMA managed to construct and build a 12-24mm - it may not be the best lens in the world (though it received some awards), but if they can why should not Canon can?!

Isn´t 16mm pretty wide (compared to the 16-35mm 2.8L zoom for FF)?! Lets not forget that only some years ago the wide-angle zooms had a range beginning from 20mm - and nobody complained about that...

We will see enormous improvements in the future, that´s for sure. Just wait and see. And don´t forget to take pictures meanwhile ;-)
