A bit of a generalization I think.
I know several French people and while there is only one I trust they cant be the only one worthy? There are millions of French people.

OK wow I thought my sarcasm was veiled thinly enough. Please let me clarify, I don’t dislike ALL french people, just most of them.
I have a d90 … why do I keep looking at this site? Sometimes I miss my 17-55IS …

It is even more so because of your namesake and inability to understand any of this.

Funny thread here. Let me play the game. Do you know what French people are thinking of Americans ? Proud of them, so proud of their flag, speak loud, fat, puritans but doing hardest porns, dangerous (everybody had a gun, pupils are shooting in their schools), environment UNfriendly…
And i keep polite. But does it give me the right to generalize to all of you ? Of course not. Be open minded. And keep in minf that here we’re talking about 5DII. CanonRumors, American, has already mention wrong rumors too !

Good news from Canon!
I sent Canon Inc Sweden an e-mail asking about a possible firmware update that will add 24 and 25 fps to my 5D Mark ii. This is the answer I got today Oct 20. First translated into English. Then in Swedish.
THE ANSWER FROM CANON SWEDEN TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH:
Hi Michael
Canon Inc are working on such an firmware update.
Regards
Roger
THE ANSWER FROM CANON IN SWEDISH:
Hej Michael
Canon Inc. arbetar på en sådan firmwareuppdatering.
mvh
Roger
MY MESSAGE TO CANON TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH:
Hello! Half a year ago I bought 2 pcs 5D Mark II. Since then I’ve hoped for an upgrade of the firmware so I can shoot with 24 / 25 fps. I have repeatedly tried to get answers from Canon on this update will be or not. It is equally important to know if it is not going to be any update as if there will be one! This information is vital to me as I use the camera for professional purpose. Canon don’t gain anything having irritated customers, so therefore I ask you once again for a clarifying answer. Yours sincerely …
MY MESSAGE TO CANON IN SWEDISH:
Hej!

The google translation followed from the reduser post might suggest he is working in 24p or 25p:
“I’ll run with the film Eric, flat SFX, plans stunts and explosions. The images we’ll turn will be processed by the company Blue3ds, which transforms the information from the Compact Flash DPX file 24 or 25 fps ready to be submitted to the laboratory and assembly.”

No, the right translation is :
“The images will be processed by the Blue3ds company who do the 24p/25p encoding” … sad !

Not that it has anything to do with a potential firmware upgrade to 24/25P which I DO think we’ll see….. whoever has drafted this workflow chart is also hoping that the 5Dii will accept timecode synchronization input… which is something I don’t believe it has… and I could be wrong, but by the look of workflow, it would be a critical requirement…

Ok, on the full workflow, (See Alex message below), it’s written that the timecode is written on the sound track. (easy with mic in plug)

As a matter of fact, a guy named Trammel Hudson (the deveoper of Magic Latern software for the Canon 5D mark 2) is currently implimenting a way to feed timecode into the camera. Look up Canon 5D Magic Lantern for even more capabilities that he has added to what them camera can do.

A Community of Photographers, Videographers and Filmmakers around the world are taking a campaign requesting improvements for EOS 5D Mark II (24p, 25p, 29.97, etc.)
It’s VERY easy and fast: calling Canon at 1-800-828-4040 to politely “enter a feature request” for the 5D Mark II.
– CHECK IT here:
http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2009/09/04/i-called-canon/
There you can find more info, customers sharing their experiences and some answers given by Canon. You might be VERY surprised!!
LOT OF US already called, and Canon is taking the request.
If you care about video improvements on the 5D Mark II, do the same!
- It’s VERY easy to do, and COMMUNITY actinons CAN make a difference.
Thanks to everyone supporting and joining this campaign!!
And thanks to CR for this great site.

Firmware 1.1.4 might be a driver for the Canon 1Ds MKlll. I don’t think Canon will release firmware with 24p option for the 5D MKll until a few months after the release of the 7D.

What the camera really needs is programmable AutoISO with max/min aperture/shutter time and not all these video gizmos. Get a camcorder.

True…the market is full of camcorders with a 24×36 CMOS at the same price of 5D II
We are all dumb.

I dont know French, but if I get this right, they claim to extract SDI in 4:2:2 and 4:4:4
That would probably only be possible via direct USB connection (4:4:4 is something like 230MBit)
“Note that “4:4:4″ may instead be referring to R’G'B’ color space, which implicitly does not have any chroma subsampling at all. Formats such as HDCAM SR can record 4:4:4 R’G'B’ over dual-link HD-SDI.” (http://tinyurl.com/6926ub)
On Dual SDI, that would even go beyond USB.
And then, who has an SDI capture card or DigiBeta?
So if this really does exist or come up, its only for Hollywood and not to the general public.

HDMI pixel encoding includes support for RGB 4:4:4 so it could just be referring to HDMI playback.

I don’t know why Canon is pushing people to get 7D for HD video. Look at the shear size of sensor the 5D2 has! It will certainly get better video. Give them 1080P@24fps, please. Maybe we can see better quality movie one day.

hey there. I called up Canon Switzerland (that’s were I live) and they told me that Canon is NOT planing any firmware update that will allow 24/25fps on the Mark II. I also would like to add, that Full HD is Full HD. A smaller sensor does not change the quality of the video. Crop effect, yes… but no change in quality…

Tribey – You are right, “full HD is Full HD” but the pixel arrangement of a full sensor vs a crop is very different. This in effect changes the quality of the video, especially in the 7d and how it handles shooting in high ISO.
