Engadget Plays
Engadget has posted a video showing off some 7D features.

8fps sounds like 10fps. Cool stuff.

Will surely get one, but still sad that it’s not 12 or 15MP max… the 18MP still sound like the weak spot of this baby. Future will tell, hopefully I’m wrong.

sucks for some, great for others. canon may put out a lower MP count 60D as it appears they are listening to market feedback and feedback has shown that even at the semi-pro APS-C level there is a clear divide between those that want high MPs versus those that want low MPs.

high MP counts are great for a lot of things, so don’t assume right off the bat it’s a weak spot. from what samples have shown, it can handle high ISO noise better than any APS-C camera to date, despite the MPs. yes, yes, diffraction. still, hardly weak.

I think you might be right about the 60D. Why take the MP advantage away from the 7D? And that way they could satisfy both camps.

I am impressed by the low noise in the 7D samples, but the general impression viewing the image at 100% is not really great. We’re definitely past the days of crisp pixel-level detail. I guess that’s a good thing, though – it’s really squeezing everything it can out of the lens. Let’s hope dynamic range and color are keeping up.

    kubelik Reply:

I do think dynamic range is the next big step for Canon. Nikon has stayed pretty far ahead in terms of highlight range sensitivity, and now that Olympus with the E-620 has shown they can produce APS-C level dynamic range, Canon is going to have to step it up there as well. Hopefully we won’t have to wait an entire generation for that to happen … as big as the 7D has been, there’s a lot of potential for a 60D, 1DMkIV, and even the future 5DMkIII and 1DsMkIV

I just said that I think it will be the weak spot, never said that it was crap. I previously said that I will get one… I can only imagine the DR and ISO on a 12MP (or a bit bigger) with same technology. And maybe they could go up to 10fps with a 12 or a 15… unless the hardware doesn’t follow.

You can still resample your images to 12MP and get fantastic per-pixel sharpness and lack-of-noise.

for 18mp the ISO is pretty good. But I bet if canon kept it at 12mp the ISO would have been much better.

I guess when I have enough money for a Hasselblad or Leaf then I can have a real camera.

Good thing I own a Canon, I’d hate to hide behind the insecurity of owning a Nikon. :) Great cameras…mostly crappy photographers.

At least Nikon set up a support group for all their fans called Fake Chuck Westfall Haha.

Nice! That Mirror sounds amazing! and I really like the new AF design…how the AF points Enlarge and decrease. Alot better looking than just fixed AF points on the screen.

And the Battery grip looks like it fits pretty well also, Finger grips look deep enough for bigger handed folks.

All in all, I’m definately buying this camera! This will be a huge upgrade for me, coming from a 450D.

LOL. Engadget and Gizmodo should just stick to what they do best: writing about mobile phones and music players. These equipment-collecting gadget freaks should quit posturing as instant photography experts. I bet these “photographers” couldn’t even load film manually nor can they manually-focus their lenses…

does anybody believes that 60D will be full frame with less mp for photo enthusiast who just want image quality without all those “pro” features of 7D?
    will it be intiduced soon???
if that’s the case i think i’ll wait for some more months…

No. It won’t be full frame, wtf are you thinking?

If you want a 12MP full frame camera BUY THE ORIGINAL 5D, THEY ARE CHEAP RIGHT NOW.

I have an old 30D and do a lot of bird photography. Would anyone care to expound on whether I should upgrade to a 7D now, or wait until a 60D possibly comes out in early 2010? I’d really appreciate any insights on the pros and cons of this decision!

    Ed Reply:

It is doubtful that there will be a 60d. The 7D is what the 60D should have been. What could a 60D possibly be?? A 50D with 18mp and video? I don’t expect one unless they position it as a lower cost camera to compete with the 90d.

It’s actually quite clear to me that there will be a 60D come February 2010.

I do agree with you on the questions about the specs.

    Anonymous Reply:

There absolutely will be a 60D. Either that or Canon will be ignoring a hugely important pricepoint that every other DSLR manufacturer offers. I don’t think that’s likely.

    Anonymous Reply:

I would wait if I were you. Chances are that the 60D will be announced in Feb ‘10 and, hopefully, the price of the 7D would come down a little by then, especially for those in the UK & EU.

Have you looked at the 50D? Do you need video? The price is reportedly dropping since the 7D launch.

I do need video, eventually, so the 50D wouldn’t suffice. I’m trying to figure out how much better an image the upcoming 60D would be capable of compared to the 7D. Thanks for your comments all!

Do you know if the 60D will be a CMOS or if it will be a CCD? Will it be able to use EF-S lenses? Are you absolutely sure it won’t be FF? I think there’s a chance it could be. Who are your sources that say the 60D won’t be FF? Thanks for your help STFU.

I think 60D will be using the same cmos sensor as 7D, you need to produce more quantity to equalize the development cost, so 600D will be using this sensor too. Me think, If 60D use the same circut board as 7D with 1 DIGIC 4 CPU less, that will be an interesting configuration.

    500D is about US$700.
    7D is about US$1,700.
    There’s a BIG $1,000 gap which will be filled by a US$1,200 60D.

We’ll know for sure in 6 months.

That would be monumental stupidity on Canon’s part. Look at the D90, or Pentax K-7, or Olympus E-30. Nothing in Canon’s lineup addresses this group right now except for the 50D. I will be shocked if there is not a 60D.

Looks like some great improvements which will be passed to the other models alike. The new focus system looks interesting.
I have a 1DmkIII with the burst speed of 10fps so the speed isn’t new, but it looks like a nice camera.

And the japanese microsite (= EOS 7D “special site” which is unfortunately only in Japanese so far and not to compare to NikonĀ“s microsites and some of the former of Canon as well), it is not accessible via Canon EOS Digital, but only via Canon Japan:
