Announcement Teaser?
UPDATE
It has been pointed out that the people involved in the presentation are in fact from Canon Business Solutions. This makes the chance of it being an EOS product remote. CBS does handle printers though, there could be something new there for the photographer.

No it’s gonna have the microAPS-H sensor because of its low noise & low MP to compete with medium format because everyone here knows crop is better and larger sensors are an abomination with crappy ISO DR IQ so with the new medium format lenses it will be an amazing 10x crop for birders and athlete’s zits fans due to the fact it will only use the center part of the glass elements.

It’s a new camera! Quad Digic 4! 30fps in burst mode with only enough cache to hold 2 pictures (after that is counting on the speed of your SmartMedia card).
New bigger sensor that is 1.6 crop from a medium format (with the same pixel density as the 5DM2, that’s why we can only fit enough cache for 2 pictures)… which with the current lens line up.. you will be be for sure getting those favorite vignetting that everyone try to put in LightRoom!
other than the RAW, mRAW, sRAW.. we now have the ssRAW, sssRAW, ssssssRAW … smallest size is 240×240. perfect for the MSN/facebook profile picture shots

Actually, the only ‘buzz’ that Canon are creating are on sad-bastard rumour sites like this. If Leica are presenting real products, that’s where most people will be looking.
Besides, there’s only wishful thinking, among those of us who have nothing better to do (or do have better things to do but they’re too boring), that it’s a (video)camera.
It could well be any of the other market segments that Canon is in.

Obviously that giant direct print button is a fake, Canon knows video is the wave of the future (their executives have seen The Aviator hundreds of times) So duh, it’s going to be a direct broadcast button that will send the video you just made to any nearby TV set. Have heard from a CR2 source that it MAY also directly burn DVD or Blu Rays to wifi compatible burners, they’re trying their hardest to get it in
That or they’ve just bought out RED

Hello to all, this is my first post on the form so I’d firstly like to extend a warm greeting to all the readers and users.
After the excitement of the 7D, something that people have not been discussing a huge amount is the lenses they believe will be most suitable for this camera.
We all know that the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is the supreme ruler of the zoom lenses – the one must have lens for all serious photographers. But even this is rumoured to have an update this fall – and much needed too I might add, if Canon wish to keep up with the latest offering from Nikon which I have been hearing really positive things about.
So what lenses are offered on the wider end of things? One must bear in mind that this is probably going to be the most important lens you buy, being your typical “walking around” lens. Ok, consider the following:
EF 24-70L f/2.8
EF-S 15-85 IS f/3.5-5.6
EF-S 17-85 IS f/4-5.6
EF-S 17-55 IS f/2.8
Firstly I would like to say that I am not, and have never been in favour of the EF-S format. I personally do not like buying lenses that cannot be used on my full frame camera body, although I do accept that the APS-C format is hugely important to Canon and have to face the unfortunate fact that I am in the minority of APS-C body owners who also own, or will ever own a FF body.
So back to the lenses. Ok, I need to say this – many on here who know me and have read my posts already know that a long standing motto of mine has been “if it doesn’t have an L it can go to hell”. For the sake of this topic, let’s just put that aside for now as I am ready, for the first time, to consider alternatives for the 7D as I really believe this is an amazing camera and love not just the speed, but also the reach that the APS-C format offers.
EF 24-70L f/2.8
For an L lens, the overall quality vs value for money is extremely disappointing. Yes, there is nothing else I would put on my FF right now, but for a newby buying a 7D, I simply would not recommend this lens. Firstly, the equivalent reach of 38-112 is nowhere near wide enough (unless you are also planning on purchasing the much revered EF-S 10-22). Secondly, lenses like this in todays market have got to have IS in order to be an attractive purchase, and this one isn’t, which is a huge disadvantage. Hopefully Canon are already working on a new version of this as it is really badly needed.
EF-S 15-85 IS f/3.5-5.6
I have not seen any reviews of this lens yet. Yes, it is nice and wide, and it has IS, but with an f/stop of f/3.5-5.6 this is just not acceptable for low light photography (despite being better than the previous offering of f/4 at the wide end) and therefore comes with some quite severe limitations. If I am buying a lens like this, at the very least I want for it to be able to keep up with my 70-200L f/2.8 IS in low light.
EF-S 17-85 IS f/4-5.6
This is being replaced now anyway, but it is a really horrible lens and painfully slow to focus. Hopefully the new one will be much better than this.
EF-S 17-55 IS f/2.8
Finally – is this the best walking around lens for use with the 7D? The simply answer is YES! There you go, I have said it – for the first time ever I am recommending the purchase of an EF-S lens. Yes ,this looks and feels like a lump of plastic, but it’s great in low light with f/2.8 throughout the range and with IS, this lens should be purchased alongside a 7D body only.
To conclude:
The recommended basic lenses for use with the 7D are as follows:
Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS
Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS
Canon EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5
Extra notes:
- Watch out as we may yet see a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II released before end of year.
- If a new version of the 24-70L comes out with IS, this would be the recommended alternative to the 17-55.

The 70-200 F/2.8 isn’t the “supreme rule of zoom” lenses – in fact, unless you absolutely need the extra stops of light, the F/4 IS is a better lens.
The F/4 is sharper, has better IS, and costs ~30% less.
Reply
Joe Reply:
September 10th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Oh, and the 70-200 F/4 IS weighs about half as much as the F/2.8.

a walkaround really depends on who’s using it. I use a 10-20mm mostly on my 30D, and honestly the lens I’d love to have for a walkaround is the 17-40L. weathersealed, and if I upgrade to a FF it still works as a — holy smokes — 17-40mm lens

I agree about the 17-55; it’s a great lens for any crop camera, and it has IS.
However, I also agree with Joe on the 70-200 f/4L IS…it’s better for most people than the f/2.8 version…far easier to carry around, and several hundred dollars cheaper…and sharper to boot.

ABC Reply:
September 10th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Here’s a thought: for about the same price as a 5dii body one can buy the 7d body with the 70-200 f/4L IS lens…or the new 100mm f/2.8 IS macro

Tamron 17-50mm is the best APS-C lens I’ve ever used, and I’ve tried a bunch! I absolutely love mine and it stays on my camera 85% of the time . . . sharp throughout all apertures and whole zoom range (even sharper stopped down!), great build quality (although not L quality), and you just can’t beat the price!

The problem is the 70-200.
It is Overkill for EF-S. It is expensive, heavy and huge. No I dont have one, I have a 100-400 & 70-300 for long lenses and they arent exacly a perfect solution and are both slow.
I keep considering selling the 70-300 on ebay and getting the Sigma 50-150 2.8 but the reviews are discurraging.
Cannon needs to build:
EF-S_50-150_2.8_IS ~$1.1K.
EF-S_150-500_4-5.6_IS ~$1.2K
If they existed I would seriously order one now and the other with the money I would get selling my lenses above on Ebay

Its bigger than a medium format camera, is canon going into netbooks? Flat panal TV’s to rival sony as the printed image is less popular. I hope its not pda phones but samsung and HTC are already major players that side of the world.
But “largest and most important launches in the company’s history” this suggests a new direction with mass appeal so networking may not be the new product range.
I’d like web TV devices but don’t think its this either.
Some new flat panal monitor technology is my guess!

Unless you’re going to call Swedes a race (which would be moronic), the original post wasn’t racist. Or even “rascist”.

Okay I´m going to break the NDA: in reality it is a calculator (ca-550D MKII) with Direct Print button (it works with Canon Pixma printers) and also features KS (keyboard stabilization) when you have to do accounting on a sloppy tables, the screen where the numbers are has automatic light detection so you get the same shade of green regardless of the light source you use.

How long did it take you to think of that and write it? Wouldn’t your time have been better spent wiping your ass before you committed it to keyboard?

It took all of last night, I watched the tendency of Canon´s product launch in the past 10 years for this date, cross compared the data with the competitors too (going 10 years backwards) then I used the data in a lamb sacrifice to a demonic entity to get the results, I have shortened 25 years by doing it. Finally Canon contacted me and made me sign a NDA (the demonic entity ratted me).
I have 12 variants of this answer if you want more then reply :D.
And while we are on the topic: how gay of you to talk about my derriere :P why don´t you mind what you do with your own derriere? :D

Being the invitation is from Canon Business Solution it could be a lot of things, a super multi copier/laser printer as an example.
I think the problem so far is that the people are to much of a tech geek clinging to get a new non existant camera instead of shooting with what´s available, thus they are gullible to think every expectation campaign will be the camera of their dreams (which it will never exist).

It has to be a video camera. They want to beat Red out the gate. While Canon can’t please the high-end red shooters, they can sure reel in all the rest of the Scarlet audiences:
Video camera body with dual-digic 4 processors— a DSLR that’s meant to shoot video, but it can also take stills. Something that can record onto a drive, so no CF cards. It will still be a lossy codec and not as good as Red’s, but the selling point here is to prosumers, independent filmmakers, and event videographers that want HD with a shallow DOF. And, if they were smart, it would mount EOS lenses.
I’m not a product designer for Canon, but if they don’t release a Red-similar video camera, then whoever is telling them what products to make should be fired. Hire me!

HP and Canon in managed multifunction printer JV
Two traditional rivals in the multi-billion dollar business printing industry – HP and Canon – are to join forces to sell multifunction device technologies and support services to the business and enterprise market.
HP and Canon said last night they plan to jointly market and distribute a new range of multifunction office systems that unite the best of both companies: Canon’s leading multifunction devices and HP’s enterprise printing and imaging assets.
The alliance builds on an established relationship between Canon and HP, and positions the companies to offer customers a new class of web-enabled solutions that combine Canon’s multifunction device processing and imaging systems with HP’s device manageability, IT integration and office workflow capabilities.
The alliance’s software and service offerings will be supported by EDS, an HP company, along with Managed Print Services from HP and Canon’s global services and support groups.
The alliance includes current and future product portfolios from both companies.
“HP has long been an industry leader with a portfolio of products, software, services and solutions that enable enterprise customers worldwide to improve their imaging and printing efficiencies without compromising the reliability, quality or professionalism of their documents,” said David Murphy, senior vice-president, Imaging and Printing Group, HP.
“In growing our relationship with Canon, to offer customers value-added and more holistic IT solutions, we are confident organisations will enhance productivity with their imaging and printing and overall business workflow needs,” Murphy added.
Canon and HP will also benefit from access to each other’s management and third-party development software portfolios, including Canon imageWARE Enterprise Management Console and Canon MEAP as well as HP Web Jetadmin and the HP Open Extensibility Platform.
The expanded portfolio of products and services is expected to be available to customers in North America and Europe, as well as global customers from these regions.
“Through this new alliance with HP, we look forward to bringing the advantages of Canon’s high-versatility, high-performance multifunction products to an expanded user base,” said Masaki Nakaoka, managing director and chief executive, Office Imaging Products Operations, Canon Inc.
“We expect this will maximise benefits for both companies’ customers while also paving the way to increased growth for both Canon and HP.”
